Think rammed tubes, shut stations, unfamiliar and dangerous areas, unsavoury characters. Weak beer, crap coke, night busses and first trains on cold platforms.

You might literally get a fist bump from the fighters as they leave the ring after, or watch tiny ants from so far away you'll wish they'd provided opera glasses, and be stranded miles away from home. There is a crapness, and a subsequent lawlessness, that adds something to the night. I'm tapped out on that for now. I wonder how many youngsters, starved of real life experiences, will pay to have someone piss in a pint glass next to them, do a bump of coke off their thumb, and kick off in the stands, as "something to tell the grandkids about" as an aside to this pathetic 'fight'?

It's an entirely different 'experience' to a well run but ultimately soulless 'Big Fight' Matchroom card.

It's a funny story to tell I suppose. Especially if it ends up a bit of a famous car crash circus.
Great post.

As for Fury vs Chisora specifically, words fail me... no justification for the match and doesn't paint Fury in a great light after all the theatrics around an AJ match-up.
Maddest experience I ever had, was the night I went to the Ponds Forge Leisure centre in Leeds - to watch homeboy Clinton Woods last fight with Glencoffee Johnson, I got chatting to a guy at ringside, as I was reporting for an American website (I think it was) at the time.

Anyway, we got chatting, and he told me he was a trainee BBBofC referee, and was on their programme (no idea) if he was or he wasn't

At the end of the night, he offered me a lift home, he was a bit of a lively sort, probably coked off his not looking back at it. I was staying with a friend in Leeds for the weekend (who is ironically my girlfriend now) - and he offered to drop me off near the City Centre, we were talking on the way back in the car, and he was telling me a story about someone he knew who had died some time ago in a motorbike accident (again from memory, it was many years ago) when all of a sudden the windscreen imploded completely - with a loud bang. There was nothing visisble that we got hit by and nothing else on the road, - it was mental. To this day, I cannot explain how the windscreen just shattered like that.

He said we should carry on driving, which seemed a bit mental, he mentioned something about having to get the car back as it wasn't his , which in hindsight should have been my cue to leave.

Inevitably we got flagged down by the police on the way back, who had some obvious questions, like 'where the fck is your windscreen?' - as soon as he saw the police he attempted to have it off on his toes, and was apprehended.

I explained that I had just gotten a lift from him at the boxing show, and I was there in my capacity as press for the fight, and was staying with a friend in Leeds for the weekend, who I think they got me to call to confirm. The police actually dropped me off to her place as I recall.

Odd night was that.

"Come on Clinton - Come on Clinton - Come on clinton.' Will forever be ringing in my ears.

Wonder whatever happened to Clinton Woods - never heard anything of him since he retired.

Brilliant post. I also think its much better to only attend a FW show on your own or with a proper hardcore fan. Save the Lads night for a Mroom show.

Sorry, that was it - he was giving me a lift from Sheffield to Leeds!

I was thinking it couldn't have been in Leeds itself, because we were on the motorway when the windscreen blew out.

Cheers.

Yes, i spent many an evening covering Clinton's fights at the legendary ponds forge leisure centre.

I remember the first time I went there, I got there early as I was covering all the undercard fights, and there were loads of families with towels walking around who had just come out of the pool. It was very odd.

I’ve not done the new Spurs stadium yet so would definitely go just for that. Probably wouldn’t bother if it was Wembley or the O2 tho.

Yeah I was looking at the timeline, I think it was Clinton's losing effort against Glen.

I don't think I was at the Bolton fight, but it could have been, as its not far away either. God knows nearly 20 years ago now.

Great story. Sounds like you dodged a bullet there. Did you ever see him again at boxing shows? I used to love the boxing events at Ponds Forge. The Clinton Woods vs Glencoffe Johnson were really tough fights. Tough men, the both of them. And who can forget the Thompson vs Rothman epic. Adam Booth and David Haye were both there that night as well, I recall. Some seriously big punches thrown by Thompson and Rothman. Incredible come from behind finish from Thompson.

I was at that one too! Was that ponds forge?

I was at so many fights back then I find it hard to remember

I was sat behind big Dave Pariss at that one. He called it about 10 seconds before, he said something along the lines of "next right hand carl throws its lights out."

I remember rothman going over in slow motion fafe first...fcking brutal

And no, never saw the 'trainee ref/judge" I suspect he's inside or dead, he was a wrong 'un"

He was good value was Clinton, tough as nails he was, and not afraid to mix it up with the very best. He fought Roy Jones pretty much at Roy's formidable peak, and gave a good account of himself. Jones Jr was the only man to stop him, which isn't bad going at all.

clinton got whooped badly by jones but was tough as nails, never went down or looked too hurt, just taking far too many shots

a rather unspectacular looking fighter going attribute by attribute, but he put it all together very effectively. like the reverse josh kelly (not to say jk isnt a handy fighteR)

I loved Clinton. A real good, old school fighter. I was buzzing when he beat Hoye. I’m sure he earned fairly well but if his career had started 5 or so years later then he would have made a fortune and probably wouldn’t have been defending his world title at a swimming baths. May also have been manoeuvred away from some of the fights we fondly remember though.

By the looks of it, at least they appear to be building a solid undercard. They must know they need to at this point

This is a good fight. If they can do Parker v Ryder, Cacace - Dilmaghani, Yvan Mendy v Denys Berinchyk , Adeleye v Wallisch etc, Bricktop might get my money the sneaky old sod

a rather unspectacular looking fighter going attribute by attribute, but he put it all together very effectively. like the reverse josh kelly (not to say jk isnt a handy fighteR)
Yeah, but getting whooped by Jones was no great knock, Roy was phenomenal at that stage.

Yeah, there was a lot of talk about Hoye coming into the fight, and I seem to remember he was the betting favourite, as many thought Clinton was nearing the end.

As others said, he wasn't spectacular in any particular department, he wasn't a fancy dan, didn't have blistering speed, or footwork, wasn't blessed with enormous firepower, but he was a solid all around fighter, and had a great workrate and a very good chin.

I seem to recall Jones did him in with body shots.

Dennis Hobson said he got a load of grief from Woods brother for pulling him out against RJJ but he stood by his decision as Clinton was too tough for his own good and would have got hurt. He also said Woods is a millionaire.

Definitely the right thing for Hobson to pull Woods out of that; which is why you'd want someone like Hobson in your camp fighting your corner. He has always struck me as being a very bright, kind and compassionate man.

I hope Woods is immensely proud of his career and for going in with Roy Jones Jnr when Roy was at his very peak. I'm not sure, pound for pound, if there has ever been better than a peak Roy Jones.

Yes, Ponds Forge. Dave Paris called it right. Even when Thompson was shaken, and on the ropes, you sensed he was going to find the equaliser. The sound in the building when he landed and everyone cheered/roared was amazing. Felt sorry for Rothman, mind. What became of him?
