Katie Taylor Named The Most Marketable Boxer In The World
Katie Taylor Named The Most Marketable Boxer In The World
Irish boxer Katie Taylor’s big win earlier this year against Amanda Serrano apparently has had big marketing implications.
London-based media company SportsPro released its annual list of the most marketable athletes in the world on Monday, and Taylor was ranked No. 47 – the first boxer to appear on the list.
Other pugilists on the top 100 list included undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez at No. 64, undefeated WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury at No. 75, and former unified heavyweight titlist Anthony Joshua at No. 88.
In 2021, SportsPro named Alvarez as the world’s No. 4 most marketable athlete. He was the highest ranking male on the list. The only other boxer to appear on the top 100 list was Gervonta Davis at No. 75.
In 2020, SportsPro named Ryan Garcia as the No. 12 most marketable athlete. Joshua was No. 31, and Fury was No. 32.
The top 10 ranked athletes in 2022 featured the following stars:
1. Cristiano Ronaldo, Soccer
2. Serena Williams, Tennis
3. Lewis Hamilton, Motorsport
4. LeBron James, NBA
5. Lionel Messi, Soccer
6. Naomi Osaka, Tennis
7. Virat Kohli, Cricket
8. Alex Morgan, Soccer
9. Sam Kerr, Soccer
10. Tom Brady, NFL
There were no MMA fighters in the 2022 top 100 list.
SportsPro released the following statement explaining their rankings:
“To compile this year’s 50 Most Marketable Athletes list, SportsPro partner NorthStar Solutions Group led a multi-disciplinary team with expertise in sports, marketing, social, and data science. Specialist partners D-Tag Analytics, SponsorPulse and Zoomph all contributed key metrics that fed into the scoring system that shaped the final ranking. An added layer of insight from consumers and experts helped ensure the robust validity of the underlying numbers.
“Athletes were ranked according to a ‘Marketability Score’, which is split into three distinct scoring components: brand strength, economics and audience. Designed to accurately evaluate an athlete’s marketability, the ranking is not just based on social media followership or reach, but also takes into account an athlete’s social impact, charitable endeavours and influence on the triple bottom line. To compile the final list, more than 700 athletes who met the criteria in were tracked and analysed across their key metrics in 2022.”
The 36-year-old Taylor (21-0, 6 KOs) is a 2012 Olympics gold medalist who fended off Serrano in a disputed split decision as the main event at Madison Square Garden in April. The bout is on the shortlist for fight of the year contender.
The undisputed lightweight champion Taylor is set to return to the ring against Karen Elizabeth Carabajal (19-0, 2 KOs) at the Wembley Arena in London on Oct. 29.

Not really on this one. Taylor is super marketable. Always respectful and doesn’t get involved in any of the politics/funny business. She just chooses to focus on boxing and not worry as much about her commercial opportunities which I respect her for.

You just need to look how big Ronda Rousey got with the right promotion and personality in a smaller sport.maverick23 wrote: ↑18 Oct 2022, 07:53Not really on this one. Taylor is super marketable. Ronda blew up because she was finishing her opponents with ease and very quickly. A bit like the way Tyson was blowing through people at a time in the 80s. The UFC gave her the perfect platform as she was winning quickly in the various promotions she was in before joining the UFC.joshj909 wrote: ↑18 Oct 2022, 11:47You just need to look how big Ronda Rousey got with the right promotion and personality in a smaller sport.maverick23 wrote: ↑18 Oct 2022, 07:53Not really on this one. Perfect timing for both really.
It’ll be more difficult for a female boxer to blow up like that unless we get someone who’s KOing everyone.
We’re in a time where companies want to be seen to pushing top women sport stars more than ever before. 8 of the supposed top 15 most marketable athletes are women which is probably far more than it’s been before. Emma Raducanu wins the Us Open and gets £10m the following year through endorsements. Katie Taylor could be all over that kind of thing but simply doesn’t want to as she wants to focus on her boxing and faith.

i dont really get how they figure this one out tbh, many boxers out there who are bigger attractions and make way more than taylor. she's a big star in a tiny country.
taylor > fury, aj, wilder, canelo, golovkin, garcia, tank, jake paul (lol), etc?

How do they work out her marketability if she doesn't do much .. like you said, she's stays away from the media and just pops up when it's fight time.

She headlined a sold out MSG in her last fight. Teo vs Kambosos only just sold out the theatre which is about a quarter of the size.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑18 Oct 2022, 13:05nah, it's mental to say taylor is the most marktable boxer in the world. ffs she's a career undercard fightermaverick23 wrote: ↑18 Oct 2022, 07:53Not really on this one. Not many blue chip companies will want to associate with Fury. Failing 2 drugs tests, some of the comments he’s made about homosexuals and his links to Kinahan make him a risky fighter to associate with, even with him being a great fighter and positive supporter of mental health.

In other words, squeaky clean so she can appeal to many markets. The likes of Floyd were big earners but he made nothing on sponsorships because he was an arsehole with criminal convictions who blurted out offensive stuff a lot. To big sponsors he therefore wasn’t marketable.

Exactly. If Floyd had been squeaky clean then he would have made another $100m from endorsements. He’s never going to get deals with Nike et al with multiple convictions for beating up women (including the mother of some of his children).Wee Tommy wrote: ↑18 Oct 2022, 16:43 In other words, squeaky clean so she can appeal to many markets. sure took the sports most marketable fighter long enough to finally headline after supporting warrington, joe parker, and connor benn back to back to backmaverick23 wrote: ↑18 Oct 2022, 16:38She headlined a sold out MSG in her last fight. marketable means able to be sold, many fighters sell way better than her. she's a career undercard fighter. further, where is serrano on the list if this is all about their fight? will sav marshall and shields be boxing's most marketable on the next list?
you can be dickhead and have tons of haters and still be marketable. it's not a synonym for well behaved or uncontroversial
imagine you can promote only one fighter in the whole sport, your choice, anyone who says they'd choose taylor is taking the piss

Katie Taylor is nearly devoid of personality, I can’t think of anyone more bland. If marketable means “inoffensive” in this context, then I suppose she might fit the bill. But certainly not in the usual sense of the word.

Taylor’s sponsored by the Bank of Ireland, that’s a big deal I’d say.

katie taylor ranks above all other boxers in her brand strength, economics, and audience? on what planet is this
maybe in ireland, a country of 5 million, but if we're talking local audience inoue and canelo are both stars in countries with 130m people

Re: Katie Taylor Named The Most Marketable Boxer In The World
Katie Taylor apparently has a net worth of somewhere between 1/4 of a million and 2 million dollars, depending on what you read.
If she is really the world's most marketable boxer, someone is doing a really shit job of actually marketing her.

Re: Katie Taylor Named The Most Marketable Boxer In The World
She's not even in the top 50 of marketable boxers, let alone the top 50 of all world athletes.
