Hiroto Kyoguchi-Kenshiro Teraji Unification Bout Set For November 1 In Japan

The junior flyweight division is set to officially crown a true divisional king.

Boxing Scene has learned that a condensed tournament is in play beginning with a November 1 title fight doubleheader to take place at a location to be determined in Japan. Two of the fights will feature three reigning 108-pound titleholders, including a terrific unification bout between two-time WBC champ Kenshiro Teraji and WBA ‘Super’ champion Hiroto Kyoguchi.

The show will also feature Puerto Rico’s Jonathan ‘Bomba’ Gonzalez (26-3-1, 14 KOs) in the second defense of his WBO junior flyweight title against Tokyo’s Shokichi Iwata. Gonzalez’s placement on the show means his team will no longer seek to have him appear on a show during the week of the annual WBO convention in Carolina, Puerto Rico, though well worth it. BS.com has learned that—with a win—Gonzalez will be in line to face the Teraji-Kyoguchi winner in a three-belt unification bout eyed for next spring.

Teraji (19-1, 11 KOs) regained his WBC junior flyweight title in a third-round knockout of Masamichi Yabuki on March 19 in his home region of Kyoto, Japan. The feat saw the 30-year-old all-action fighter avenge his lone defeat, having suffered a stunning tenth-round knockout loss to Yabuki last September to end his first reign dating back to May 2017 and spanning eight successful title defenses.

Kyoguchi (16-0, 11 KOs) has arguably emerged as the best junior flyweight in the world, strengthening his case following Teraji’s brief fall from grace. The two-division champ has held the WBA title since a New Year’s Eve 2018 tenth-round knockout of Hekkie Budler, the last unified junior flyweight titlist who vacated the IBF belt prior to his fight with Kyoguchi.

Injuries and the pandemic have slowed Kyoguchi’s progress as he’s made just four title defenses, having twice gone more than a year between fights. The 28-year-old from Tokyo ended a 15-month ring absence with an eighth-round knockout of Esteban Bermudez in their oft-postponed title consolidation clash on June 10 in Guadalajara, Mexico. The bout was his second straight in North America, both coming since his signing with promoter Matchroom Boxing and with Eddy Reynoso’s No Boxing, No Life management team.

The clash between Teraji and Kyoguchi marks just the second-ever unification bout between reigning titlists from Japan. The lone other occasion came more than ten years ago, when Kazuto Ioka barely edged Akira Yaegashi in their fantastic June 2012 WBC/WBA strawweight title fight.

An additional unification bout with Gonzalez will produce an historic moment for the junior flyweight division, which has never boasted a three- or four-belt champion. DAZN—which could wind up carrying the event, though no U.S. platform has been confirmed—is also hosting a vacant IBF junior flyweight title fight between Hector Flores (20-0-4, 10KOs) and Sivenathi Nontshinga (10-0. 9KOs) this Saturday in Hermosillo, Mexico.

The Kyoguchi-Teraji winner will crown the first recognized lineal champion in more than a decade, when Giovani Segura abandoned his reign in 2011 to campaign at flyweight.

ESPN Press Release

The light flyweight division takes center stage Tuesday, Nov. 1, as two championship fights with three world titles at stake headline a loaded card from Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

WBC champion Kenshiro Teraji attempts to unify titles against WBA king Hiroto Kyoguchi in the main event. In the co-feature, Puerto Rico’s WBO champion, Jonathan “Bomba” Gonzalez, will defend his strap versus Japanese contender Shokichi Iwata.

Teraji-Kyoguchi, Gonzalez-Iwata, and undercard action will stream live and exclusively in the U.S. on ESPN+ starting at 4:30 a.m. ET/1:30 a.m. PT.

“The Amazing Boy” Teraji (19-1, 11 KOs) is an eight-year pro who won the WBC world title in May 2017. He made eight defenses of that crown until a stunning 10th-round knockout defeat to Masamichi Yabuki last September. Less than six months later, Teraji exacted revenge with a third-round knockout over Yabuki to regain his title. Kyoguchi (16-0, 11 KOs) is a two-weight champion who was the IBF 105-pound ruler until he vacated that belt to move up to light flyweight. Since winning the WBA light flyweight crown on New Year’s Eve 2018 against Hekkie Budler, he has made four title defenses. He is coming off June’s eighth-round stoppage over Esteban Bermudez, which ranks among the year’s best title fights.

Gonzalez (26-3-1, 14 KOs) fell short in his first attempt at a world title in 2019 against Kosei Tanaka. He fulfilled his championship destiny last October when he edged Elwin Soto by split decision. Gonzalez defended his WBO title in June with a unanimous decision against Filipino upstart Mark Anthony Barriga. Iwata (9-0, 6 KOs), from Tokyo, won the Japan Boxing Commission, OPBF and WBO Asia Pacific titles en route to earning his first world title shot.

In other action scheduled on the ESPN+ stream:

Junto Nakatani (23-0, 18 KOs) vs. Francisco Rodriguez (36-5-1, 25 KOs), 10 rounds, junior bantamweight — WBO flyweight champion Nakatani tests the junior bantamweight waters against Mexican action star Rodriguez, a former unified 105-pound world champion.

Shuichiro Yoshino (15-0, 11 KOs) vs. Masayoshi Nakatani (20-2, 14 KOs), 12 rounds, WBO Asia Pacific Lightweight Title — Yoshino is coming off a technical decision over former world champion Masayuki Ito. Nakatani rebounded from last year’s knockout loss to Vasiliy Lomachenko with June’s first-round blitzing of Harmonito Dela Torre.

Kenshiro Teraji: Right After Yabuki Rematch Was Over, I Wanted This Unification Match With Kyoguchi

Kenshiro Teraji understood the importance of regaining his WBC junior flyweight title. (photo by Naoki Fukuda)

It meant avenging his lone career defeat, which he did so in emphatic fashion with a third-round knockout of Masamichi Yabuki earlier this year. Of at least equal importance to the 30-year-old from Kyoto, Japan was putting back in play the possibility of a long-desired title unification bout with countryman Hiroto Kyoguchi.

“I’ve always wanted this fight and his WBA belt,” Teraji told Boxing Scene through a translator. “Right after the rematch with Yabuki was over, I wanted this unification match.”

The wish was granted, much to the delight of hardcore boxing fans around the world. Teraji (19-1, 11KOs) will attempt the first defense of his second WBC title reign, while Tokyo’s Kyoguchi (16-0, 11KOs) puts his WBA ‘Super’ title on the line for the fifth time as they meet this Tuesday at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan (ESPN+ (US), 4:30 a.m. ET/Amazon Prime (Japan) 5:30 p.m. PT).

The bout marks just the second-ever unification bout between reigning titleholders from Japan. The lone other occasion came more than ten years ago, when then-unbeaten WBC strawweight titlist Kazuto Ioka edged then-WBA champ Akira Yaegashi in their memorable June 2012 slugfest in Osaka, Japan.

Teraji did his part to restore the domestic superfight with his win over Yabuki on March 19 in his Kyoto hometown. The rematch came six months after Teraji suffered a stunning tenth-round knockout defeat in their hellacious battle last September 22 in Kyoto. The defeat ended his four-plus year WBC title reign, having made eight defenses.

The first fight with Yabuki was delayed by twelve days due to Teraji testing positive for—and believed after the fight to have never fully recovered from—Covid. He was at full strength for the rematch, which was brief and one-sided as Teraji once again pleaded his case as the best junior flyweight in the world.

Based purely on merit, Kyoguchi is the only other fighter with a strong argument. The two-division titlist has held the WBA 108-pound title since New Year’s Eve 2018, most recently defending in an eighth-round knockout of Mexico’s Esteban Bermudez in their June 10 WBA title consolidation clash on the road in Guadalajara.

Teraji is unbothered by the level of competition in their highly anticipated showdown.

“This is a fight I’ve always wanted because of what he has,” stated Teraji. “Other than that, I don’t have any real thoughts on Hiroto. He just feels like a normal opponent to me.”

Shuichiro Yoshino Drops Masayoshi Nakatani Twice In 6th Round Stoppage Win

Shuichiro Yoshino is the latest rising contender to make a splash in the lightweight division.

The unbeaten 31-year-old came out top in a terrific firefight with countryman Masayoshi Nakatani, scoring two knockdown en route to a sixth-round knockout in a battle of Tokyo-based lightweights. Yoshino floored the 5’11 ½” Nakatani in rounds five and six, the latter prompting an immediate stoppage at 1:45 of round six Tuesday evening (local time) at Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

Nakatani was able to get by early in the fight solely on the strength of his long jab and superior reach. It didn’t take long for Yoshino to work his way inside, clipping his taller countryman with left hooks to the chin.

Time was called in round three, as the ringside physician examined a deep cut under the left eye of Nakatani. The wound was manageable, as action continued. Nakatani briefly adjusted to the relentless pressure of Yoshino, as he committed to a more purposeful jab and also began to work the body in round four. Yoshino drove Nakatani to the ropes, where he landed with right hands downstairs.

Yoshino scored the bout’s lone knockdown, coming at the end of round five which featured terrific two-way action to that point. Nakatani had the wherewithal to bob a left hook but weaved directly into a right hand temple shot which forced him to a knee.

Nakatani made it to his feet and out of the round but was no longer able to keep Yoshino at bay. The two met at center ring in round six, letting their hands go but with Yoshino getting the better of the action. Nakatani was once again floored, this time due to relentless pressure by Yoshino and with referee Toshio Sugiyama deciding that the fight did not need to continue.

Yoshino picks up by far his most significant win to date, as he improves to 16-0 (11KOs). The win makes him a fighter to watch in a jam-packed lightweight division.

“I was facing a guy with a lot of international experience and I showed what I can do,” Yoshino said through a translator after the win. “Now it’s time for me to prove what I can do against those same fighters overseas.”

Nakatani falls to 20-3 (14KOs), with all three defeats coming in his last five fights.

The 33-year-old fringe contender previously only lost to top talents Teofimo Lopez preceding his lightweight championship reign and Vasiliy Lomachenko, whose first fight after losing to Lopez was a ninth-round knockout of Nakatani in Las Vegas.

Headlining the four-fight telecast, WBC junior flyweight titlist Kenshiro Teraji (19-1, 11KOs) faces countryman and WBA ‘Super’ champ Hiroto Kyoguchi (16-0, 11KOs) in a highly anticipated title unification bout.
