Mike Tyson = amazing post fight career

Last night, I watched Mike Tyson appear on video link supporting Uysk and the Uysk Foundation, and he comes over so well.

I think his post boxing career has been even better than his boxing career: smash hit Broadway Shows, successful podcasts, profitable weed factory, cameo appearances, best selling memoirs, and he looks like he is enjoying life. That's a great result.

Whilst he will go down as quite possibly my favourite fighter ever, the man who made me a fan of the sport - I do have a tendency to agree with this.

When I speak to friends about Tyson's post fight career the usual comments I get is that "I am so square" - personally I am not sure, as much as a fan I am of him as a fighter, he should hold that "can do no wrong" that many boxing fans have on him.

As time goes on both his in ring accomplishments and his out of ring accomplishments are magnified.

If, as an example, Anthony Joshua retired and became this constantly high mumbling shell (and I mean watch videos of a switch on young Mike Tyson talking boxing, his encylopedic knowledge is inspiring) making vlogs, the response would be "how the mighty have fallen" and "cannot cope with retirement" would be muttered. I've actually said this to friends in the real world but I just feel sad watching and listening to Tyson now - so a switched on, intelligent guy (when on form) in his youth and now just a mumbling, semi punch drunk guy with permantly glased eyes. I get called "square" for my views and I don't want to go down a cannibis usage debate - personally though I have seen the pitfalls of that much usage and I wouldn't describe it as a good role model, let alone a "god like" status he holds.

But also because he is becoming this influencer with a big impact outside of the sport, his abilities and achivements within it is also magnified. He's my favourite heavyweight and I truly believe that on his day he could have beaten anyone - however, he was also a seriously flawed fighter and the analogy of him just being only good on top and when the going got tough he didn't want to know is still very true. He would be the underdog for that reason against most of the top 10 all time heavyweights - but you here far more younger people talk about Tyson being the greatest ever than the likes of Lewis and Holyfield.

I would have loved to have heared how the Tyson without the influence of years of cannibis views the boxing scene now and make calls on fights etc. I see Tyson now and I just feel sad.

Rightly or wrongly, in life, many, many avenues are closed to people who commit crimes, particularly crimes of a sexual nature, after they are released from prison. A child sex offender wouldn’t be able to say ‘ I’m paid my debt to society, now I want to follow my dream and become a school classroom assistant. ‘Fortunately for Tyson, everyone has forgotten about his crimes against women, which started at a very young age ( Teddy Atlas left Cus D’Amato because the old man was using his contacts with law enforcement to get Tyson repeated cleared, it’s well documented particularly in Atlas’s autobiography). Some might say he’s a danger to women, especially as he is also a heavy drug user. Everyone deserves a second chance, apparently he’s had several, but let’s not pretend he’s a saint, a victim or a great example to us all. He isn’t , well not to me anyway.

He was tremendously exciting in his day. I remember watching most of his fights on TV. I recall watching him against Mitch Green, Tillis, Ribalta and Frazier, where he made him look like a broken jack in the box.

Then you had that blitzing of Berbick, Reg Gutteridge seemingly amazed.

I was still in my early teens and didn't quite understand how the belts worked or how DK was pulling the strings in the background. I remmeber all the talk and politics around Spinks and Holmes and the way he pulverised both. Then the get in there Frank from Harry and the huge upset against Buster.

Then obviously during the comeback I'm older and marginally wiser, you could see the politics a mile off but still entertaining nonetheless. Never quite sure what was going to happen (other than McNeeley was never going to wrap anyone in a cocoon of horror). The first Holyfield fight I watched live (on TV), that was something, you knew the first big right hand from Tyson that just budged Holyfield sideways slightly that it was not going to be Tyson's night.

Imploded and descended into farce from that point on but still highly unpredictable and still had a couple of good punches in him.

I don't tihnk I've experienced the aura, excitement or hype in a boxer since. Yeah there's been bigger stars, way bigger PPV hitters and the 90s were good (Hamed, Chavez, Trinidad, DLH, Whittaker, Lewis, Holy/Bowe, Toney, Mosley, Jones etc) but didn't quite match the interest around Tyson.

Was Tyson a piece of crap? No doubt about it.
I was one of the few who was not a fan of his even when he was active.
But has he changed his life around? It appears so. How much does say the last 10 years
of his life compensate for his past behavior? That is only an answer for a higher being not for me to make.
I was not a fan of Tyson the fighter. But I have became a fan of the man that appears to have attempted to change his life and become a very interesting human.
