Tunney gotta be an underdog in the majority of observations, but he would be the best boxer Louis had ever faced, maybe except of Marciano, Charles and Walcott.

The legacy of Louis is superior in comparison with Tunney's one, his HW resume is more impressive in quantity, but if we pick two major wins in the both resumes, those gotta be Walcott and Dempsey.

Louis' advantages over Tunney would be in punching power and timing. Tunney's advantages over Louis would be in speed, movement and chin. Although Tunney could have enough power for hurting particularly Louis, who had been in trouble on numerous occasions.

I can see both winning this fight, but I lean more towards the underrated Tunney. I'd say, Tunney would slightly lead on points and knock Louis out later in the fight. It could be similar to Schmeling's win over Louis.

If you say prime, then Tunney would have his moments by out-boxing Louis like Billy Conn did in their first fight with Louis, but the Brown Bomber would cut Tunney off the ring behind his powerful left jabs and combinations including his big right hand to stop Tunney in 14 rounds.

The great Gene Tunney would be outboxing the Brown Bomber for the first half of the fight until the great Joe Louis closes the gap and stops Tunney later in round 13th.

Conn would have the weight as Tunney. Tunney would box and punch harder than Conn. However, Tunney is not facing the 3-year layoff of Jack Dempsey, but he's facing the Joe Louis in his prime. Louis is no Louis who lower his jab down in the first Max Schmeling and Tunney had never fought the prime heavy puncher like Louis. Like I said before, Tunney would out-box Louis early, but Louis would find his way to slow Tunney down by cutting off the ring and jabbing his face. He would also nail Tunney with heavy combinations, then he would either take the decision or stop the Fighting Marine in 14 rounds.

But I feel like if Joe didn't knock him out, Tunney would be piling up points and winning the majority of the rounds.

Basically if Louis doesn't get Tunney outta there, he loses a decision. A wide one.

I was just acknowledging the knockdown and it's place in history. I agree it played out about the same as the Douglas vs Tyson knockdown, and Tunney looked well enough to regain his feet earlier in the count he just wisely took most of the count.
