Frank Martin & Michel Rivera To Fight December 17th In Showtime Main Event

Frank Martin and Errol Spence Jr., Martin’s promoter, fulfilled the promise they made after he stopped Jackson Marinez almost four months ago, that the emerging lightweight would fight whichever opponent was willing to take the risk next.

Boxing Scene has learned that Martin and Michel Rivera have agreed to meet in a high-stakes 135-pound fight December 17 at a venue to be announced. The lightweight bout between Indianapolis’ Martin (16-0, 12 KOs) and the Dominican Republic’s Rivera (24-0, 14 KOs) will be the main event of a “Showtime Boxing: Special Edition” telecast that night.

The card headlined by Martin-Rivera is expected to be held at The Armory in Minneapolis, where David Morrell Jr. (7-0, 6 KOs) will defend his WBA world super middleweight title against Aidos Yerbossynuly (16-0, 11 KOs) on Saturday night in a “Showtime Championship Boxing” main event.

The 27-year-old Martin, a southpaw from Indianapolis, is eager to prove himself against an undefeated fighter.

He conquered another Dominican lightweight in Marinez (20-3, 8 KOs), whom Martin dropped in the ninth and 10th rounds on his way to a 10th-round, technical-knockout victory July 9 at Alamodome in San Antonio. Martin was ahead by scores of 88-82, 88-82 and 87-83 entering the 10th round against Marinez.

Showtime aired Martin-Marinez as part of the Rey Vargas-Mark Magsayo undercard July 9.

Martin is trained by Derrick James, who has guided Spence, the unbeaten IBF/WBA/WBC welterweight champion, throughout his career.

The 24-year-old Rivera, an orthodox boxer who is trained by Herman Caicedo in Miami, most recently out-boxed Jerry Perez (14-2, 11 KOs) to secure an eight-round, unanimous-decision win on the Deontay Wilder-Robert Helenius undercard October 15 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. All three judges credited Rivera for a decisive victory over Perez (80-71, 79-72, 79-72), which was broadcast by FS1.

In his prior appearance, Rivera out-pointed previously unbeaten Joseph Adorno (17-1-2, 14 KOs) in a 10-rounder Showtime televised as the opener of a tripleheader March 26 from The Armory. The craftier Rivera defeated Adorno by the same score, 97-93, on all three cards.

Martin-Rivera Showtime Card Moved To The Cosmopolitan In Las Vegas

The December 17 card headlined by an intriguing lightweight bout between Frank Martin and Michel Rivera has a new destination.

Boxing Scene has learned that Premier Boxing Champions’ final show of 2022 will now take place at The Chelsea, a cozy venue inside The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. The Armory in Minneapolis initially was reserved as the site for a card that’ll include three fights Showtime will televise.

Showtime most recently aired a PBC show from The Cosmopolitan on February 26, when Dominican southpaw Hector Luis Garcia (16-0, 10 KOs) upset heavily favored, previously unbeaten Brooklyn native Chris Colbert (16-1, 6 KOs) by unanimous decision in a 12-round, 130-pound WBA elimination match.

Minneapolis’ Armory has become a favorite venue of Al Haymon’s PBC in recent years. Showtime has televised three PBC cards from that arena this year, most recently on November 5.

Cuban southpaw David Morrell Jr. (8-0, 7 KOs), who resides in Minneapolis when he isn’t training in Houston, defeated Kazakhstan’s Aidos Yerbossynuly (16-1, 11 KOs) by 12th-round knockout in the main event November 5. Yerbossynuly, 30, suffered brain trauma during a brutal bout in which he absorbed a lot of punishment and remains hospitalized at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.

Whoever wins the 12-round WBA elimination bout between the Dominican Republic’s Rivera (24-0, 14 KOs) and Indianapolis’ Martin (16-0, 12 KOs) will advance one step closer to a title shot in the 135-pound division.

The 24-year-old Rivera, who resides and trains in Miami, is ranked second by the WBA, sixth by the IBF, 10th by the WBO and 12th by the WBC. The 27-year-old Martin, a Detroit native who is promoted by Errol Spence Jr.’s company, is ranked 10th by the WBA, but not in the top 15 by the IBF, WBC or WBO.

The first two fights Showtime will televise December 17 haven’t been announced.

A pair of IBF elimination matches will round out Showtime’s tripleheader December 17 in Las Vegas.

Boxing Scene has learned that the network will televise a 12-round, 168-pound eliminator between Jose Uzcategui and Vladimir Shishkin as its co-feature before unbeaten lightweights Frank Martin and Michel Rivera square off in the main event at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. In the opener of Showtime’s three-bout broadcast, bantamweight contenders Nikolai Potapov and Vincent Astrolabio have agreed to meet in a 12-round, 118-pound eliminator.

Uzcategui is the IBF’s seventh-ranked contender for one of Canelo Alvarez’s four super middleweight titles. The Venezuelan veteran initially thought his fight against WBC interim champion David Benavidez would be rescheduled for some point in January, but Benavidez instead will face rival Caleb Plant, a former IBF champ, at some point in March in a pay-per-view main event.

The 31-year-old Uzcategui (32-4, 27 KOs) has won three bouts by knockout or technical knockout since American Lionel Thompson (22-5, 12 KOs) upset him by 10-round unanimous decision in December 2019 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. Tijuana’s Uzcategui was supposed to battle Benavidez in a “Showtime Championship Boxing” main event last November 13 at Footprint Center in Phoenix, but he tested positive for recombinant erythropoietin (EPO), which is on the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association’s list of banned substances.

Uzcategui was replaced by Kyrone Davis (16-3-1, 6 KOs), whom Benavidez beat by seventh-round technical knockout.

Shishkin (13-0, 8 KOs), a 31-year-old Russian contender, is ranked ninth by the IBF in the super middleweight division.

Russia’s Potapov (23-2-1, 11 KOs) is the IBF’s third-ranked contender for its bantamweight champ, Japanese star Naoya Inoue (23-0, 20 KOs). Potapov, 32, has won three straight fights since he suffered a controversial 12-round, majority-decision defeat to Chicago’s Joshua Greer Jr. (22-3-2, 12 KOs) in July 2019 at Prudential Center in Newark.

The Philippines’ Astrolabio (17-3, 12 KOs) upset former super bantamweight and bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (20-3, 13 KOs) by unanimous decision in their 10-rounder February 26 in Dubai. Astrolabio, 25, is the IBF’s sixth-ranked contender in the bantamweight division.

Indianapolis’ Martin (16-0, 12 KOs) and the Dominican Republic’s Rivera (24-0, 14 KOs) will square off in a WBA lightweight elimination match in the main event.

Press Release | Juarez vs. Dulay, Garcia vs. Stewart To Streamed by Showtime

A pair of action-packed bouts will highlight live streaming action on the SHOWTIME SPORTS YouTube channel and SHOWTIME Boxing Facebook page this Saturday, December 17 in a Premier Boxing Champions event from The Chelsea inside The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

The SHOWTIME BOXING COUNTDOWN show, hosted by award-winning MORNING KOMBAT live digital talk show hosts, Luke Thomas and Brian Campbell, starts at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT and will feature all action rising contender Omar “El Relámpago” Juarez battling veteran Austin Dulay in a 10-round super lightweight attraction, and unbeaten teenage prospect Elijah Garcia in an eight-round middleweight duel facing Cruse Stewart.

The live streaming presentation will precede a SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING tripleheader beginning at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT live on SHOWTIME headlined by rising undefeated lightweight contenders Michel “La Zarza Ali” Rivera and Frank “The Ghost” Martin clashing in an intriguing 12-round WBA Lightweight Title Eliminator.

Tickets for the event, which is promoted by Man Down Promotions and TGB Promotions, are on sale now and can be purchased through Ticketmaster.com.

The 23-year-old Juarez (13-1, 5 KOs) enters the ring propelled by momentum gained from his efforts inside and outside the ring. The only blemish on his record came from a narrow majority decision loss to All Rivera in a thrilling bout in June 2021. Since then, the former standout amateur has won his last two fights, most recently earning a 10-round decision victory over Ryan Karl in February. A native of Brownsville, Texas, Juarez has achieved recognition in his community by uplifting the state’s youth through motivational speaking, receiving commendations from the Texas State Senate and the Texas House of Representatives for his altruism.

Dulay (15-3, 11 KOs) will also step into the ring having won his most previous outing, as he scored a first round TKO of Anthony Michael Linenfelser in April. The 27-year-old had lost two of his previous three bouts, dropping bouts against veteran contender Diego Magdaleno in February 2020 and rising lightweight Jose Valenzuela in December 2021. Fighting out of his hometown of Nashville, Tennessee, Dulay won his first 11 pro bouts, with his only other letdown coming against super featherweight contender Chris Colbert.

Fighting out of Phoenix, Arizona, Garcia (12-0, 10 KOs) will look to close out 2022 with his fourth victory of the year, having most recently knocked out Edgar Valenzuela in October to establish himself as a prospect to keep an eye on. The 19-year-old has moved fast since turning pro in 2020, knocking out his first six opponents and four of his last five. He will face the 33-year-old Stewart (8-1, 6 KOs), who was born in Illinois but now resides in Maple Grove, Minnesota. Stewart steps back into the ring after dropping a decision against the unbeaten Hakim Lopez in his previous bout in June.

The non-televised undercard will also include Cuban bantamweight Joahnys Argilagos (8-1, 4 KOs) in a six-round bout against Mario Hernandez (10-3-1, 3 KOs) and welterweight Kenneth Sims Jr. dueling Los Angeles-native Rock Myrthil in an eight-round showdown.

Rounding out the lineup is the pro debut of super bantamweight prospect Ray Robinson against Los Angeles-native Victor Saravia (1-3-1, 1 KO) over four-rounds of action, plus unbeaten super welterweight Bakhram Murtazaliev (20-0, 15 KOs) facing Mexico’s Roberto Valenzuela Jr. (20-3, 19 KOs) in an eight-round scrap.

This fight is going under the radar.

Both highly ranked contenders. Both undefeated.

Not a world title fight, not protecting their '0'

Rivera is probably that bit more experienced.

Undercard Weigh-In Results From The Cosmopolitan

Frank Martin stepped as close as he could get to Michel Rivera without touching him after they made weight Friday afternoon.

The Indianapolis native will have to close the distance as best he can Saturday night, too, to give himself the best chance to win their 12-round battle between undefeated lightweights at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Martin (16-0, 12 KOs), who officially weighed in at 134¾ pounds, is listed by Caesars Sportsbook as slightly more than a 2-1 favorite over the Dominican Republic’s Rivera (24-0, 14 KOs).

The taller, more experienced Rivera stepped on the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s scale at 134½ pounds.

The winner of their WBA elimination match will move closer toward a title shot in the lightweight division. Their fight will headline a “Showtime Championship Boxing” tripleheader from The Chelsea, a venue inside The Cosmopolitan.
