ANNOUNCEMENT

Well the day has come I never thought would and the day I never wanted to come. I don’t think retiring is the right word so I’ll say quitting.

But the boxing days are over, not by choice really or on my own terms, but more by lack of self discipline and struggling to battle and deal with my own mental struggles & demons. I tried and I tried again but kept failing.

I’ve let a lot of people down, especially this year and I’m truly sorry and I never meant for it to end this way and honestly never saw it ending this way.

Even up to a couple of days ago I was thinking there got to be a way I can salvage it and right all my wrongs both to my self and others that have helped me, but this time it’s genuinely to little to late.

I’m fully to blame for my failures and accept it and now got to start learning to live life with out boxing and learn to forgive my self for letting everyone down around me. Especially my manager & trainer Joe Gallagher, my Kids and my Dad. And the biggest one letting my self down.

Funny cause my dad was always right haha. He did say to me once or twice “the only person that would ever beat me and stop me would be my self” He was right

There’s loads of people to thank that have helped me along the way but I’ll get round to thanking them all personally over the coming days & weeks.

As of right now I haven’t a clue what I’m gunna do with my life and need some time to digest the fact it’s the end of this part and only part of life I’ve ever known. I do wish it ended differently but as of a lot of things in life, it is what it is.

People will say I achieved a lot and I suppose I did in a sense and maybe as a 10 year old boy if I was told I was gunna win what I did and do what I’ve done i would of been a happy 10 year old.

Truth is tho I will always remember my career for what I didn’t win and what I didn’t do.

Thanks to each and every person that has supported me along the way, wether it be coming to watch me , watching on TV or just sending a comment or message wishing me well. I did and do appreciate you all

Gutting that he couldn’t get more active. Constantly seemed to be getting injured or ill and the inference here is that it may not have always been the case.

Sounds like he has turned down fights. Such a shame as very talented and his division is red hot. Surely opportunities somewhere if he carries on. Wadnt long ago he was due to go to USA to fight Joe Smith Jnr which seemed winnable

Shame as his career never got going, he actually done well to win British and Commonwealth titles and challenge for a title but a bit of a what might have been feel

I'm sure he'll be fine in retirement he's been semi retired his whole career

he barely beat another mediocre opponent after that


unfortunetly, after years of his career moving far too slow, he was slowing down as a fighter too. maybe he realizes it and hence this decision. all these fighters dicking around should remember that they wont be able to do it forever

It's one of those ones like Wlad and AJ, you go for the kill against a dangerous mofo and get banged out, we'd all be saying he shouldn't have got carried away

I always liked Johnson, rooted for him ever since he won Gold for Scotland at the Commonwealths in 2010 I think it was, I soon realised though it wasnt all injuries plaguing his pro career, Tesco Joe, Fast Car and Bunny copped some flak for his inactivity but as his statement admits , it was pretty much self doing

johnson threw lots of big shots right after dropping bert, i think ppl misremember it a bit. but bert was throwing hard shots back and began boxing more measured, and it quieted johnson down a bit. bert clearly won the next round and was right back in it. keep in mind bert had already hurt and dropped him too, so just charging in and throwing without abandon probably didnt seem like a good plan at the time.

of course now we know that johnson lost anyway so it's easier to say he shouldve done something different and shouldve just unloaded with no concern for his own defense

I always liked Johnson & found it baffling why an exciting puncher like him never seemed to be pushed by promoters. I’d always assumed it was down to him been from Boston & not selling many tickets as every fight night was hundreds of miles for his fans. It seems like it was his own demons holding him back.

That Buglioni win was special. Going into your opponents back yard as the away fighter & straight into a shootout with him & stopped him in a round. What a way to win a British title!

Had his "Kevin Leushing" moment against Beterbiev, but then got his arse abruptly handed to him on a plate.

He was no Kevin Finnegan or Clinton Woods and let us not pretend otherwise, but Johnson certainly hit a few high notes

I think he's struggled for a while since losing his dad. I think it was against Buglioni where he walked to the ring crying then just broke him up. He had that upcoming Euro shot that was very winnable too.

I struggled with anxiety and depression in the past too and it ruined my career, relationships etc so I definitely feel for him. Hope he gets happy. He's certainly not let anyone down.
