On a Friday night of November 12, 1982 at the Orange Bowl in Miami, FL, undefeated WBA World Jr. Welterweight Champion, Aaron Pryor of Cincinnati, OH, stopped the legendary great champion Alexis Arguello of Nicaragua in 14 fast paced terrific and unforgettable rounds.
In probably the best fight of the 80s decade, it was marred by a controversial incident when Pryor's trainer, Panama Ray Lewis, asked one of the cornermen to give him the black bottle, the one with the mix.
Was the bottle illegal? Did Pryor won fair and Square? Or did the mix gave him a new burst of energy?
Arguello's 19th fight win streak ended. It was the first time in 4 divisions that he lost a title fight since February of 1974, when he lost to Panama's Ernesto "Nato" Marcel by decision. It was also Arguello's second loss in 8 years after he won the WBA World Featherweight Championship from champion Ruben Olivares of Mexico by a 13th round knockout.
This fight was one of the greatest fights in boxing history in a decade of unforgettable fights.
It was Pryor's finest hour. Arguello failed to win his 4th world championship in his 4th weight class. He was trying to be the first fighter to do such a feat.

Arguello is one of my favourite fighters.....absolutely gutted to see him forlorn on the canvass knowing that the Hawk was a step too far. Alexis was a multi weight Champ.elmersalsa wrote: ↑12 Nov 2022, 22:09 On a Friday night of November 12, 1982 at the Orange Bowl in Miami, FL, undefeated WBA World Jr. Welterweight Champion, Aaron Pryor of Cincinnati, OH, stopped the legendary great champion Alexis Arguello of Nicaragua in 14 fast paced terrific and unforgettable rounds.

Arguello was a better fighter and should have won, but those two mofos clearly made an illegal move. In any case, a great fight.

I remember being SHOCKED when Arguello lost-I backed him strongly before the fight.

Great fight. Gomez vs Pintor a month later was even better. Was pulling for Arguello big time and always thought he’d pull it out in the late rounds

Back when weigh classes were much more clearly defined and the saying "good big man always beats a good little man' was true
p s that straight right in the 12th? round from Arguello would have KO'd an elephant and should have KO'd Pryor
