Bob Foster v Carlos Monzon at LHW in 1972

Post by Seamus »

Monzon went over the 160 mark a couple times, even fought at 176 and stopped a guy who had an inflated record in Argentina, but how would he fare challenging for Foster's LHW title.

It's 175 lbs Seamus, but anyway, Foster was the beast at light heavyweight and he would overwhelm the middleweight great in Carlos Monzon behind his great jabs, right hands and left hooks to either take a decision or a late round stoppage the same way that Monzon batter Napoles, who was a great welterweight.

I think Foster wins the battle of the jabs from the opening round, and about the 6th sets Monzon up for a devastating over hand right, Carlos goes down, followed by 2 more quick trips to the canvas before the referee stops it.

Who was greater Pound for Pound? Monzon by a decent margin.
But this is not Monzon's weight and Foster was a beast at 175. I see Foster man handling
Monzon but not stopping him in a 9-6 or 10-5 decision.
You have got to remember how good Carlos was and how good his chin is. I do not
see Foster stopping him

Foster has never faced someone as good as Monzon at LHW.

Speculation. Monzon never faced a decent LHW. Regardless of what he said, I strongly suspect Carlos had doubts that he could perform as well at 175. Every fighter wants a legacy when he hangs up his gloves, and I believe Monzon and Hagler both felt attempting to add titles at LHW might not end well.

Foster destroys him-way too much size and power. Plus, Foster's great jab means he,s not getting outboxed either by Monzon.

It's like this:
Monzon destroys Mantequilla
Foster destroys Monzon
Frazier, or Ali destroys Foster.

Great big men beat great little men.
