Terry Flanagan

Post by rio »

Anyone know what happened to him? Won 3 on the bounce after losing a decision to Prograis then never heard from again. Good lightweight.... Defended WBO belt 5 times and it was a travesty the Crolla fight never happened....same town, same school, both world champions. I always got the feeling it was Crolla side (Gallagher, Hearn) who didn't want that fight as they knew Turbo would be a very tough night.

It's a crime that he didn't fight Crolla.

Cheers. Presumed he's retired then. Hope he made enough in his world title reign to live comfortable. Always liked to see fighters with no top AM experience, no big promoter come through the small hall scene and win a world title. Can't think of any other than Terry, Warrington and Fielding (if you count his title as real)

He’ll get a football banning order for that and a conviction. Never worth it.

I had completely forgotten Flanagan existed. He seems like the forgotten champion of British Boxing. He won the WBO title then had 5 defenses which is a lot more than more feted British world champs. Moved up. Lost twice on points to decent opposition had a few more then just disappeared from boxing.

I’m just wondering why he was never given the big promotional push? He was from Manchester and had that PR friendly story of meeting Ricky Hatton as a kid and saying he’d become world champion.

Anyone know what happened there?

Pretty sure that Flanagan vs. Petrov was the first boxing broadcast in 4K, certainly in the UK.

I remember he had the reputation as being a bit of a hard watch. Harsh, but he was certainly not fan friendly.

What a career he had, unbeaten at lightweight and when he moved up he only lost to the unbeaten Hooker and a peak Prograis

Was he our most unheralded world champ ever ? The lack of coverage, praise and presumably money he received, in comparison to another Manchester lightweight of that time, Antony Crolla, was scandalous.

That may have been down to just bad luck at being signed to Frank and thereby condemned to fight on the barren wasteland of allegedly.

Always seemed like a decent lad too, top bloke and a top blue. Hope he’s doing well.

Shame we didn’t get the Crolla fight.

Would have been made easy today.

Everyone being on DAZN and all that.

Well underrated, then and now. Very very quick feet, and decent skills, just not a lot of power. Hooker was kind of a stylistic nightmare for him (very long reach, decent power, and it was an SD) whilst peak Prograis was very good indeed. A shame he never got a really big night.
