Claressa Shields vs. Savannah Marshall II - Summer 2023

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Savannah Marshall confirms Claressa Shields rematch and says fight could take place at St James' Park next summer

Savannah Marshall lost to bitter rival Claressa Shields by unanimous decision in October; Marshall tells Soccer AM plans are being made for a rematch at Newcastle's St James' Park stadium next summer; Shields' team have declared an interest in taking on Natasha Jonas

Savannah Marshall says she has activated a clause to take on Claressa Shields in a rematch.

Marshall lost to her bitter rival by unanimous decision in October, live on Sky Sports, on an historic night for women's boxing.

She told Soccer AM there are plans to hold a rematch at Newcastle's St James' Park stadium next summer.

Asked about the possibility of a second crack at the self-proclaimed GWOAT [Greatest Woman of All-Time], Marshall said: "Yeah, definitely. I've activated the rematch clause, so..."

The north-east native and American middleweight superstar Shields sold out London's 02 Arena earlier this year as part of the first all-women bill to be shown live on television in the UK and Ireland.

A grander stage still could play host to a second fight, according to Marshall, who said: "I know Sky are really keen - and BOXXER - to get a rematch at St James' Park in the summer... it'd be in the summer so it doesn't clash with the football season."

Marshall was gracious in defeat despite the well-documented hostility between the two, calling Shields a brilliant fighter, but she is confident of reversing the result at the second time of asking.

"Going from the last fight, I think I can outbox her," she said. "[It's] just changing the tactics.

"[Last time the tactics were] to go out there, sit on her chest and make her work. She had more than what I thought she would."

Sav is a great lass, but she's going to need to make some serious adjustments to win the rematch. Peter Fury has done a great job for her, but I think she needs a change.

No point in changing trainer she’s just a few levels below shields. No trainer can change that

There is if she's going to fight her again. She needs to do something differently. Maybe Peter can get he to box at range this time.

She was completely outclassed. The Peter Fury style is not going to beat Shields.

Absolutely zero point in a rematch. She’s just going to take damage.

Rematches are nothing new. Floyd Patterson got his after the first round blow out by Liston and got the same result.

Yeh,

I think Shields surprised everyone in how she started that fight.

She certainly surprised me, twitter, Sav and her team.

Marshall can’t match the speed or work rate of Shields, and that supposed big punch was nowhere close to being an equaliser last time.

But I’d happily watch them scrap again, it’s an entertaining spectacle.

Shields has a good point there. Don’t even think there should be a rematch. Rematch would be even more one sided.

Much as I like Savannah Marshall she's lost that special marketability of being a British champion. If she wants that rematch, whether it's warranted or not, she's got to go to the United States of America.

I imagine, if the truth is told, the reason why she doesn't fancy going to America is because Peter Fury is not allowed in. Remember how he was prevented from working the corner of Fury vs Cunningham?

He can go to Canada, but not the United States.

Shields should be compelled to win a fight against a ranked opponent before this goes ahead.

Savannah beat her with movement as amateurs. The Peter Fury herky jerky style has been proven to not work and Sav probably can't go back to the old style so I doubt she can do any better.
