Brits Who Looked Like A World Beater, But Never Made It.

Post by keithmoonhangover »

I'll start us off with Kirkland Laing and Errol Christie. Both looked amazing coming up. These days I think they both would have won WBO straps.

Depends how you define ‘made it’ but I expected bigger things from Ryan Rhodes and Michael Gomez as they rose thru the ranks.

David Price early on. He was put in too deep against Tony Thompson

Luke Campbell.
Lovely boxer, top pedigree amateur, gym rat and consummate professional in and out of the ring.

Unfortunately the bar was very high when it came to world level and his age was creeping up there by the time he was challenging it.
I believe his peak was 29 years old.

I liked Richard Williams style. Rather unfortunate he got put in with a relatively unknown Sergio Martinez (twice) who would go on to prove just how good he was.

Richard 'The Secret' Williams got regular mentions on here a while back. :OhYes: I blame George Groves.

It was the right match at the time, he just wasn’t good enough. The rematch was stupid.

Wasn't he awarded the title rather than winning it ?

A name who I will always associate with Brodie also is Spencer Oliver. I thought the trio of Brodie, Oliver and Patrick Mullings were going to win world title at one stage.

Spencer Oliver was retired because of a brain injury. That was a great shame.

This name doesn’t really fit, but I always thought Kevin Lear would feature more than he did. I think he retired through injury.

Stupid match up against Jose Seys on Midweek Sport, without that fight he may have won a world title

I heard it said that Errol left his pro career in the gym. Too many amateur fights. Kronk sparring. Seys likely exposed a fragility that was always going to be his Achilles heel.

He was a hero to me and my mates.

Personally I think it was terrible matchmaking. They took him from English level to world level in a single bound. Add to that Thompson was a rangy, PED filled, southpaw who's only defeats in the previous twelve years was to Wladimir Klitschko and it's a recipe for disaster. I know for a fact Frank Maloney was very reluctant to make to the match.

Scott Harrison- I know he won the wbo title but could have done a lot more.
