Contempt for boxing

Post by goose 5 »

I come across more and more people who hold boxing in contempt-whether it's those who consider it immoral or people who are MMA fans/martial artists who think boxing is grossly inferior to other combat sports.

While I don't feel a need to defend boxing , I'm curious if anyone here has had similar experiences ?

Most boxing fans I know of at least tolerate UFC and visa versa. People who hate both are pacifists. I can handle women who hate both but when guys do, they're gurly-men. :OhYes:

To be honest, right now the most contempt I encounter for boxing is from boxing fans.

Same here.
Boxing fans do far more to drive potential new fans away from boxing than any corrupt promoter could ever do.
I mean who doesn't want to watch sports with a group of fans who do nothing but cry about scorecards, belts, promoters and have an obsessive hatred for any boxer that actually brings new fans to the sport?
Sounds like a great time

In the end, without fans, boxing is dead, so it's important. Fans are fickle though. Boxers seem much more dishonest these days in terms of being divas and not giving fans fights they want. I'm frustrated as a fan, but it will pass.

Boxing is definitely on a decline.

I had a brief period of being a UFC more or less hardcore fan, until I finally realized, that MMA wasn't my cup of tea to be more than a casual fan, but still boxing delivers a lot of frustration despite an addiction to it.

There're too many promotions, networks, belts and weights. A lot of fighters try to sellout too much.

These things are major problems, which cause a lack of the wanted bouts.

If Boxing were ran like the UFC we we would of seen spence vs craw, Loma vs tank and AJ vs Wilder 3 fornicating years ago....

In that little side world boxing would be fuccking epic. I still love boxing, but its hard to be a fan when you might get 0 truely special fights in a year.

Boxing was at first, with only 8 champs. Now 17 with 4 major orgs, and countless secondary worthless straps within those. Eventually, UFC will get watered down too.

I despise the politics of boxing. I don't really mind multiple works titles but the inter conto, ibf euro, wbo euro stuff gets on my nerves. I hate how some fighters can be divas like when cotto refused to defend his middle weight strap against anyone at 160 and was draining people like Geale down in weight until they looked like a zombie from Michael Jackson's Thriller, or Canelo fighting a career welter who wasn't even the top 10 at that weight for a light middle strap, whilst contenders that fought eliminators get shafted.

Then you have fighters who are big names obviously using peds but it never getting out because cable, promoters, sponsors get stupid money from it. Then they all wax lyrical when there is a ring fatality. Not to mention the robberies.

I love boxing but parts of the sport make it difficult.

100%
And can you blame them?
The sport has been shooting itself in the foot for decades.
It isn't rose tinted glass in effect when I say boxing pre 2000 was way, way better.
Not perfect, but compared to this century, it's garbage.

Yeah, but even with all that, UFC just seems so much smaller than boxing. Pacquao/Mayweather stopped the world. UFC will never have that because there is no build up. That might be the biggest drawback here.

Excluding Floyd I’d say UFC has bigger nights. Fury, AJ and canelo compete with it, but it’s only Floyd who was beating it.

Boxing was my favorite sport growing up, I don't like UFC.

This last 10 months or so is the worst boxing has been for me hardly any fights to look forward to didn't see that many good fights. Really sad.

I have espn+ which is good sometimes and the price is right, and DAZN hasn't shown a decent fight a long while and not worth paying for .

Thanks God For NBA and NFL.

I do look forward to Josh Taylor and Cattrell and Lomachenko vs Haney but thats about it.

Anyone who doesn’t have contempt for modern boxing just hasn’t been paying attention.

MMA doesn’t even begin to hold a candle to

BOXING

Boxing is the noble art where you don’t hit a man when he’s down. As for the other sport …

Don't personally know anyone at all who follows the sport anymore. Know lots of people that follow baseball, basketball, football etc. Local media has all but completely ignored it for more than 15 years.
Don't know if it's contempt anymore; it's simply not on people's radar.

I think the boxing websites are losing readers and viewers because there are less comments. A few comments will be unrelated to the article and will try to sell something. Also, Ring Magazine is going to be only digital and will not be printed after 100 years of existence. I notice more boxing articles in the Spanish Miami Herald newspaper which is called El Nuevo Herald, but I can’t read them. I guess there are still a lot of Hispanic boxing fans.

Basically, a few elite boxers are greedy and getting overpaid.

This is detrimental to the sport, the fans and all the other boxers below them.

A bit like the rest of society in general with a few extremely greedy individuals exploiting the vast majority.

Success and hard work should be rewarded but unfortunately it doesn't always work like this.

Certainly not in boxing 2023.

Getting boxing back on TV would be the best way forward.

I was lucky enough to see Ali, Leonard, Duran, Hearns, Tyson, Bruno etc all on free to watch TV.

I don't recall seeing everyday people talk about boxing since those days.

I used to watch boxing on ABC Wide World of Sports. They would show the lighter weight classes too with boxers such as Michael Carbajal and Jorge Paez.
