Yuriorkis Gamboa Jailed in Cuba Over Fatal Car Accident

The details are still being confirmed, but several outlets are reporting that former world champion Yuriorkis Gamboa is currently jailed in connection to a fatal accident that occurred on the night of December 31 in Santiago de Cuba in Cuba.

The news was first reported by Boxeo Cubano.

El Nuevo Herald spoke to a source close to the situation, who explained that the Olympic gold medal winner allegedly ran over a pedestrian on a stretch of road with no lighting.

The source stated that Gamboa was not under the influence and the situation is just a tragic accident.

"[Legal] steps are already being taken to help Gamboa, although there are still many details to be clarified," the source commented to the paper. “Something that we want to make clear is that Gamboa was not under the influence of alcohol or any other illegal substance. Gamboa is a very religious person and does not consume alcohol or anything improper."

Gamboa, 41-years-old, has not fought since getting knocked out by Isaac Cruz on April 16 of last year.

The outcome was viewed by many as the final nail in the coffin for Gamboa's pro career. Gamboa was hurt numerous times in the fight before the referee stepped in to wave off the action in the fifth round. It was Gamboa's third defeat in a row after suffering a decision loss to Devin Haney in 2020 and a knockout loss to Gervonta Davis in 2019.

Based off of what your saying it sounds like an accident, maybe they're holding him until they have done a thorough investigation.

Yuriorkis Gamboa Released From Jail, Awaits Trial Date For Tragic Accident

Former world champion Yuriorkis Gamboa has been released from jail and is currently back home in Cuba, but that does not mean that his legal problems are over.

The Cuban fighter was detained after a tragic traffic accident on New Year's Eve. He was released on bail and is legally unable to leave the country.

According to his manager Jesse Rodríguez, Gamboa left the detention center where he was being held in Santiago de Cuba on Wednesday afternoon and is currently at his residence in Guantanamo awaiting a trial date from the prosecution.

"Gamboa is already close to his family and friends in Cuba," revealed Rodríguez to George Ebro. "We know that a trial awaits him, but every effort is being made to prevent this legal process from taking place, because it has been proven that Gamboa was not guilty of what happened."

Gamboa was the vehicle driver in a fatal accident which occurred on December 31.

While the boxer was driving through Santiago de Cuba on his way to Guantanamo, Gamboa struck a pedestrian who later died from their injuries.

According to Gamboa's team, the boxer was driving on a dark road when the pedestrian unexpectedly stepped in front of his incoming vehicle.

Rodríguez indicates that a surviving witness, and the reconstruction of the event, would seem to alleviate the boxer's guilt.

For a long time, Gamboa has split his life between Miami and Guantánamo and basically used to come to the United States to carry out his training camps prior for important fights.

Gamboa has been inactive since getting blown out by Isaac Cruz on April 16 of 2022. At 41-years-old, and dealing with a serious legal issue, Gamboa's career appears to be over.

What a waste of a career.
Let's hope he spends his time wisely and maybe sprouts up somewhere bringing and mentoring the new generation of boxers, he's been there and has the experience.
Don't let everything fall to pieces man, there's always light at the end of the tunnel.

If he wasn't under the influence I can't imagine they could charge with anything too stiff here. An area with no Lighting. A person in the middle of the road. It's not like he's a horrible monster or something. It's just a tragic accident.

My Dad did 3 years for a fatal accident, and he WAS drunk. So with that being said, even worst case scenario surely Gamboa can't get any worse than a year in jail, and even that would seem a bit much to me.

well, if you just assume that gamboa's team is giving an accurate account of what happened, but it's always helpful to hear both sides

Of course. That's what trials are for, and even so what I pointed out was a case in America, not Cuba. So I don't know what the difference is, and I know laws can be radically different from country to country.
