Much as I like Gerry Cooney I can't see him doing anything with Jose Ribalta if Mike Tyson wasn't able to do much with him.

Prime for prime, Cooney would blow Ribalta out in 5 rounds after nailing him with his devastating left hook.

Tyson couldn't do much with him? Tyson completely dominated the fight. Decked three times before stopping him.

The stoppage happened in round 10 of the scheduled 10. If it took Mike Tyson that long to get the deed done I don't believe that Gerry Cooney would have been able to do anything with Ribalta. Even Mike Tyson said he was disappointed in his performance against the man.

WTF? Brother, have you seen the fight? Tyson dominated him.

Ribalta didn't beat anyone of note on the way to Tyson and had already lost to Bonecrusher, Marvis and the 0-1 Ricardo Richardson. Cooney was a destroyer with big wins to prove it and only lost to Hall of Famers.

I just don't believe Gerry Cooney who was really not a well-rounded fighter, just a great left hook, would be able to do much. Mike Tyson was superior in every respect, with incredible hand speed and explosiveness, and it took Mike Tyson 10 Rounds. Cooney might have won, but he wouldn't have dominated anything.

Clearly homicide doesn't know what the term "couldn't do much with him" means.

Let's put it this way. I don't see Cooney stopping Ribalta, and I think Ribalta has a chance of edging out a decision win. Other than old men, point out to me precisely where Cooney proved he could beat a guy like Ribalta? It has to strictly be on the basis of his performance against Larry Holmes.

The Cuban heavyweight had a split decision loss to Bonecrusher Smith prior to losing to Mike Tyson. After Tyson he lost decisions to Tubbs, Dokes, Coetzer, Witherspoon and Holmes. He was stopped by Seldon and Hipp, but this was in the 90s.

I think it unlikely Cooney was going to win by knockout. Ribalta was a big guy himself at 6'5". If Cooney was to win it would have to be by decision.
