Canelo/GGG - made twice without DAZN

Re: Edward and DAZN 2023
I don’t think Eddie had a bad year globally last year. If you compare the 30 odd shows and the size of some of the fights, I think Matchroom were comfortably the number 1 promoter last year.
They took a big step back in the U.K. though with probably the 3 biggest shows not coming from them (x2 Fury and Brook/Khan). Their shows in the U.K., if we exclude PPV, were probably the best out of the 3 main broadcasters but there weren’t enough shows and there weren’t any massive shows. Plus DAZN is still pretty unknown here.
The 2023 stuff is mystifying to me. If you’re a subscriber, particularly in the current climate, you’d have had 3 weeks or so with zero confirmed shows to look forward to. They were just giving people a reason to cancel and when things are tough for people it’s a much easier decision.
Looks like they’re doing 2 shows in the first 2 months. The Womens show is actually pretty good (some good make undercard fights) and I love Wood/Lara but they need a lot more.
I wonder where the fault lies with the lack of confirmed shows. They were originally saying they’d announce the Q1 line up at the Warrington show on December 10th and then it was definitely before Christmas.

Very balanced and I agree. Only thing to add though is that their association with Canelo slightly masks their true US position which I don't see as being particularly strong.maverick23 wrote: ↑11 Jan 2023, 05:27 I don’t think Eddie had a bad year globally last year. No doubt at all from me that the DAZN pivot towards profit is having a big impact with the whole scheduling, along with the weaker positions now of their two UK jewels, Benn and AJ. Whats more important to DAZN in the UK currently - Matchroom Boxing or KSI and Misfits - an interesting question to ponder.

I couldn't care if they put on 132 cards. They put on 12 in the UK and that's all i am interested in. All my mates are the same and every one of them had DAZN but have now cancelled. Edward was King and he is definitely my favourite promoter but things have gone downhill. It got even worse yesterday that DAZN is now the home of fake boxing. I also disagree totally win the Conor Benn situation. Drugs gets bans. In system ban. All I want is boxing on Saturday nights from 6 to 11 where I know the boxers

Yeah - if Canelo was to start regularly working with another network/promoter then that would change things. It would also force Matchroom and Golden Boy to be more aggressive in finding another marquee fighter in the US of which there are very few and none that I could I see them getting.garethhop wrote: ↑11 Jan 2023, 05:37Very balanced and I agree. Re: what’s most important for DAZN in the U.K. - I’d say at the moment it’s 100% misfits. I’d imagine it’s driven more subs to DAZN then the traditional boxing has as there haven’t really been many marquee fights that would get the casual boxing fan signing up. The only that got my friends talking was Canelo/Billy Joe which benefitted from Billy Joe playing silly games in the lead up. Clearly Benn/Eubank and AJ/Usyk 2 would have done that and given DAZN the shot in the arm it needs but they didn’t have much luck with those. I still don’t get why Eddie didn’t just get a rights fee for AJ/Usyk 2 rather than giving them all the tv rights to decide where they went. Short term gain at the expense of exposure for his stable.

Re: Edward and DAZN 2023
I think Eddie underestimated the amount of people that don’t care about fights in the middle night or fights in Italy on a Friday night. I enjoy all the stuff but there aren’t 100,000 people in the U.K. that will get up early to watch 4 hours of boxing in Mexico with only a couple of known fighters.boomtown65 wrote: ↑11 Jan 2023, 06:34I couldn't care if they put on 132 cards. Like I said before I think their U.K. shows were pretty good last year. There just weren’t enough of them. They should be looking to 18-20 in the U.K. and it looks like they’re starting the year with just one in the first 2 months which isn’t acceptable.
I’ve been over this before on the Benn topic but I don’t actually put much blame on him/Matchroom for the test stuff. It’s up to the board to ban him and the likelihood is that he couldn’t cancel the fight without that. His only error, and it was still a fairly big one, was making out that they’d still push to keep the fight going for 24 hours or so after Benn was banned. Sense prevailed though.

Re: Edward and DAZN 2023
When I was a kid watching BBC and ITV boxing, I used to dream we would have a boxing channel. allegedly was good for a time and DAZN can be very good value. As a boxing nerd, I would like more small hall shows, but with decent matchmaking. The issue with DAZN is that unlike SKY and BT, it currently doesn't attract non boxing fans. If you're channel surfing, you might watch the boxing. If you see it advertised on BT Sport, you might watch it. If it's all over Sky Sports News, you might watch it. Ditto if they are watching the late Premier League. To watch a fight on DAZN you have a real interest IMO.
I think short term, DAZN is great for Eddie, but long term, how do they engage the sports fans, who will watch the boxing if it's on?

Deluded haterz? The fact that Eddie Hearn has lost so many fighters since he has gone to DAZN and various other fighters have declined to sign with him indicates that all isnt well. Most of us dont care about cards in Mexico or provisional US towns at 4:00am in the morning.
His demise on the domestic scene is very apparent. I think you are deluded when you make such comments.

Lawrence Okolie, Chris Billam-Smith, Liam Smith, Richard Riakorphre, Marku, Natasha Jonas, Savannah Marshall, Joseph Parker... Ben Whittaker declined Matchroom as did Lauren Price. Did Frazer Clarke also refuse Eddie? Joe Cordina and Felix Cash are unhappy about inactivity. Callum Smith isnt fighting regularly nor Buatsi. Khan-Brock wouldnt fight each other with Eddie. He had a fight with Boxxer to resign Dalton Smith and apparently is paying him big dollar for a 3 fight deal.maverick23 wrote: ↑11 Jan 2023, 08:18There’s a narrative that Eddie’s haemorrhaging fighters in the U.K. but who has he actually lost? Okolie, Liam Smith and CBS are fair. I think Boxxer have done well with CBS by giving him 2 shows in his home town. They’d spoken about that for ages with Matchroom and I bet it’s something Eddie regrets not doing. Better to have 4,000 in a packed arena there than 4,000 at the Sheffield Arena.
I’m not fussed by Marku but he did leave as you say. Same with Parker although I presume he was only on a fight-by-fight deal with Matchroom.
The amateurs are in a good place. Both Matchroom and Boxxer are seemingly paying over the odds. FW seems to be keeping himself to himself and leaving them to fight over the Olympians whilst he goes for the younger amateurs. Probably wise.
I’m not sure why Cordina would be pissed. He had a world title fight signed for the Abu Dhabi card before his injury stopped it. He seems mostly annoyed about being stripped. Similar with Cash. 2021 was a right off for him after the Bentley fight for personal reasons. He was out twice in 2022 and would have been out a 3rd time but had to pull out on the morning of the fight.
I actually think inactivity is rife across all boxing. Matchroom need to get their guys fighting more regularly. They’re not at the level of PBC inactivity but it doesn’t help build names when they’re fighting so infrequently. I always think that unless you’re a big name you should be fighting at least 3-4 times when you reach any kind of championship level. The only person who was kept really active last year I think was Skye Nicholson. I wonder why that is.

Eubank v Smith is on Dazn U.S, Japan and DACH (whatever that is)
It's not on here in Norway and I can't get the sky fights anywhere.
I have no option but to break the law and find a stream.

Between them I think they headlined the majority of UK shows in the 2019-2022 period for Matchroom.
Most of them are either retired, gone or in a position of inactivity, with nothing much else built behind ready to take over.
Re: Edward and DAZN 2023
If Matchroom aren't promoting UK shows, I think it will be 8 weeks between British shows, then their boxers will be inactive. Hearn needs to put one proper show on a month with a credible main event plus a couple of NextGen shows a month alongside them to make DAZN worthwhile and give his boxers dates.maverick23 wrote: ↑11 Jan 2023, 09:08Riakporhe wasn’t really a Matchroom fighter. Re: Edward and DAZN 2023
It is hard to defend DAZN from a UK perspective, despite the best efforts of some.
They told us it was ‘Game Changed’ for UK boxing.
The reality is a distinct lack of decent fights (or any at the moment), the introduction of PPV and resorting to influencers to drive subscribers.
By any standard, anybody assessing that would surely say it has been a failure??

Re: Edward and DAZN 2023
The wider issue is of course if DAZN will survive, certainly in its current form. Their 2022 losses are eye watering and they are nowhere near the profit stages.
They spent last year cutting costs and offsetting the costs of their sports rights, and trying to move to betting etc.
I'm sure all of this plays into the reasons not just why PPV rocked up, but why you just aren't seeing anything like the output from Matchroom quality wise that there was pre Covid.
