Josh Taylor Relinquishes IBF Title; Jeremias Ponce-Subriel Matias Vacant Title Fight Ordered

Josh Taylor remains the lineal junior welterweight champion but with only one physical title in tow.

Boxing scene has confirmed that the unbeaten Scottish southpaw has officially vacated his IBF 140-pound title. The move follows weeks of speculation that Taylor would relinquish title, as he eyes a rematch with England’s Jack Catterall that will likely take place November 26 in Manchester or Glasgow.

The IBF will now order a fresh round of negotiations between Argentina’s Jeremias Ponce and Puerto Rico’s Subriel Matias, who were twice before in talks for fight with everchanging stakes. The two highest rated 140-pound contenders with the IBF were previously in talks for a final eliminator, and earlier this year for an interim title fight that was tabled once Taylor was ordered to honor his mandatory title defense against Ponce.

Boxing Scene has learned that Ponce-Matias will likely take place on the Deontay Wilder-Robert Helenius undercard as part of the October 15 Fox Sports Pay-Per-View from Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Taylor (19-0, 13KOs) has spent nearly all year giving up pieces of the 140-pound crown, all in the wake of his disputed twelve-round, split decision win over Catterall on February 26 in Glasgow. The fight marked his lone defense of the undisputed junior welterweight championship after he won the WBC/WBO titles while defending the IBF/WBA belts in a unanimous decision win over Jose Ramirez in their battle of unbeaten, unified titlists last May in Las Vegas.

Taylor-Ramirez was permitted on the condition that the winner next face Catterall, who was the overdue WBO mandatory challenger at the time but who agreed to first allow the undisputed fight to take place. In the wake of the Taylor-Catterall fight came widespread demand for a rematch.

Taylor was long interested in such a fight, though it required his wading through three separately ordered mandatory title fights. The 31-year-old Scotsman ran out the clock in a WBA-ordered title defense against Alberto Puello, allowing the fight to go to a purse bid before deciding to give up the belt earlier this spring. Puello claimed the title in a twelve-round win over Batyr Akhmedov on August 20 in Hollywood, Florida.

Next up was the WBC, with former two-time title challenger Jose Zepeda expecting to face Taylor. Talks went nowhere, with a purse bid hearing delayed several times before Taylor opted to give up the belt on July 1. Zepeda was then ordered to next face Ramirez in what would have been a rematch to their February 2018 clash, won by Ramirez who ultimately walked away from the vacant title fight due to personal conflict.

Zepeda remains first in line for the vacant WBC title as he is now in talks with Regis Prograis, whom Taylor defeated via majority decision in their October 2019 World Boxing Super Series 140-pound tournament final. Taylor claimed Prograis’ WBA title in the win, while defending the IBF belt he earned in a twelve-round win over Ivan Baranchyk for his first title victory in May 2019.

Taylor made four title defenses of the IBF belt and even flirted with the idea of moving forward with an ordered fight with Ponce (30-0, 20KOs), who became the number-one contender following a tenth-round knockout of Lewis Ritson last June in Newcastle, England. The IBF ordered the fight on July 7, then calling for a purse bid hearing which was to have taken place this past Tuesday.

The session was canceled on Monday, heightening speculation that Taylor was going to give up the belt. It was also a signal that his rematch with Catterall was moving forward, whether in a voluntary defense of his WBO title or taking place just above the 140-pound junior welterweight limit.

The IBF was unable to declare the title vacant until receiving written confirmation from Taylor and promoter Top Rank, which was provided on Wednesday.

Matias advanced to the number-two position following an eighth-round stoppage of Batyrzhan Jukembayev last May 29 in Carson, California. He has since added a ninth-round stoppage of Petros Ananyan on January 22, avenging his lone career defeat when he dropped a ten-round decision in their February 2020 clash in Las Vegas.

Tough one, Matias is a demolisher and Ponce is an edgy, sharp fighter who sneaks some nasty body shots. Both deserving of a title fight.

IBF ORDERS PURSE BID BETWEEN MATIAS AND PONCE FOR VACANT TITLE

On August 23rd, the IBF ordered Jeremias Ponce and Subriel Matias to begin negotiations for the vacant IBF junior welterweight championship that was formerly held by world champion Josh Taylor of Scotland.

An agreement bwtween Ponce and Matias has not been reached within the time frame set by the IBF, so the sanctioning body has ordered a purse bid for Tuesday, November 15th.

Matias, from Puerto Rico is an extremely hard puncher with a record of 18-1 with 18 KOs. The one loss, to Petros Ananyan, was avenged in Matias' last fight.

Ponce, from Argentina, is 30-0 with his best win coming on the road in the hometown of former British champion Lewis Ritson.

Subriel Matias-Jeremias Ponce Set For February 25 In Minneapolis; Part Of Showtime Card

Subriel Matias and Jeremias Ponce have a date and a site for their 140-pound title fight.

Boxing Scene has learned that Matias and Ponce will square off for the vacant IBF junior welterweight title February 25 at The Armory in Minneapolis. Showtime will televise their 12-round bout as part of a tripleheader, the second of two “Showtime Championship Boxing” broadcasts in February.

Puerto Rico’s Matias (18-1, 18 KOs) and Argentina’s Ponce (30-0, 20 KOs) will fight for an IBF belt that undisputed 140-pound champion Josh Taylor relinquished August 23.

The bout between Ponce, the IBF’s number one contender, and the second-ranked Matias was supposed to be a final eliminator to determine the IBF’s mandatory challenger for one of Taylor’s titles. The IBF approved Ponce-Matias as a championship match once Scotland’s Taylor (19-0, 13 KOs) gave up its junior welterweight title and eventually ordered a purse bid.

TGB Promotions won an IBF purse bid November 15 to earn the right to promote Ponce-Matias. Its winning bid of $510,000, submitted on behalf of Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions, was the only offer made that day.

The 30-year-old Matias, who is affiliated with Haymon’s PBC, hasn’t fought in nearly a year.

The knockout artist avenged his lone loss in his most recent bout, which resulted in a technical knockout of Petros Ananyan (17-3-2, 8 KOs) last January 22 at Borgata Event Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Armenia’s Ananyan declined to continue after a ninth round in which he was knocked down.

Ananyan upset Matias by unanimous decision in February 2020. Matias got off the canvas from a seventh-round knockdown in that bout, but he lost their 10-rounder on all three scorecards at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Ponce, who will end a 10-month layoff of his own, produced his most noteworthy win in June 2021. He dropped British contender Lewis Ritson (then 21-1) three times on his way to a 10-round, technical-knockout victory in that bout at Vertu Motors Arena in Newcastle England, Ritson’s hometown.

Two weeks before its February 25 telecast, Showtime will air a tripleheader February 11 from Alamodome in San Antonio. Mexico’s Rey Vargas (36-0, 22 KOs), who has held the WBC’s 126-pound and 122-pound championships, and Houston’s O’Shaquie Foster (19-2, 11 KOs) will fight for the vacant WBC 130-pound crown in the 12-round main event that night.

Press Release | Jamal James To Face Alberto Palmetta Added

Minnesota boxer and former WBA "regular" world champion Jamal “Shango” James will make his return Saturday, Feb. 25 during a Premier Boxing Champions event at The Armory in Minneapolis.

James (27-2, 12 KOs), a popular figure at The Armory, will face battle-tested veteran Alberto Palmetta (18-1, 13 KOs) of Argentina as part of a Showtime televised tripleheader.

A world title fight in the 140-pound division headlines the card. In the main event, hard-hitting Subriel Matias of Puerto Rico (18-1, 18 KOs) will face Argentina’s Jeremias Ponce (30-0, 20 KOs) for the IBF junior lightweight championship.

As BS.com previously reported, Elvis Rodriguez is scheduled to collide with Joseph Adorno as part of the televised card.

James, of Minneapolis, is determined to prove he’s still a top contender in the 147-pound division.

“Every fight is important. You don’t want to lose any fight,” James said. “This fight is obviously very important because it will put me back on track to get a title opportunity again. It’s also important to me to let people know I am still in the mix. I’ve been off for a while so now it’s time to remind people that at 147, Jamal ‘Shango’ James is here to take over.”

James hasn’t boxed since October 2021, when he lost his WBA “regular” welterweight title to Radzhab Butaev in Las Vegas.

Palmetta hopes to spoil James’ homecoming. The battle-tested southpaw, a 2016 Olympian, presents a tough challenge for the Minneapolis fighter. Most recently, in November, Palmetta scored a third-round TKO win over Thomas Mendez.

“It always feels good fighting at The Armory,” James said. “That is hometown love. It will definitely feel good getting back into the ring and fighting in front of an audience in general just because it’s been so long.”

Press Release

Top super lightweight contenders will square off as popular knockout artist Subriel Matias meets undefeated Argentine Jeremias Ponce for the vacant IBF 140-pound World Championship to decide one of the kingpins of the red-hot super lightweight division on Saturday, February 25 live on Showtime from The Armory in Minneapolis headlining a Premier Boxing Champions event.

The telecast begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and features the return of Minneapolis-native Jamal “Shango” James in the 10-round welterweight co-main event as he battles 2016 Argentine Olympian Alberto Palmetta. Kicking off the telecast, exciting super lightweight contender Elvis Rodriguez duels the hard-hitting Joseph “Blessed Hands” Adorno in a 10-round attraction.

The 30-year-old Matias (18-1, 18 KOs) has a seek-and-destroy style that is easy on the eyes and hard for his opponents. He has early and late KO power with all 18 of his victories coming via stoppages – his last six in the fifth round or later. The lone loss of his career came against Petros Ananyan via 10-round unanimous decision in 2020 and was later avenged. Matias, of Farjado, Puerto Rico, faced two unbeaten boxers after the loss, defeating Malik Hawkins and Batyrzhan Jukembayev by stoppage. In the rematch he stopped Ananyan by ninth-round TKO, methodically wearing his opponent down and exhausting him before dropping him and ending the action.

Ponce (30-0, 20 KOs) will be making his U.S. boxing debut when he meets Matias in what has all the earmarks of an immovable-force-versus- unstoppable object-type matchup. The 26-year-old Ponce of Buenos Aires, Argentina hopes to be included in the long lineage of legendary Argentine boxers who preceded him. He put himself in position to fight for the IBF title with a resounding 10th-round TKO victory over Lewis Ritson in June 2021. He has kept himself busy in anticipation of the title match and stopped Michel Marcano via second round KO in November 2021 before most recently earning a TKO victory over Achiko Odikadze in April of last year.

Minneapolis’ James (27-2, 12 KOs) will return to the ring for the first time since dropping a 2021 slugfest to then unbeaten Radzhab Butaev, which snapped James’ seven-fight winning streak. The 34-year-old returns to fight at The Armory for the fifth time in his career, having won four straight bouts there between April 2018 and July 2019. That run for James included triumphs over fellow contender Abel Ramos and former Champion Antonio DeMarco. James also owns victories over veteran contenders including Javier Molina and Wale Omotoso, with his only other blemish coming against former world champion Yordenis Ugas.

A native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Palmetta (18-1, 13 KOs) represented his home country at the 2016 Olympics before turning pro in November 2016. The 32-year-old has won his last 12 fights, with 11 coming by stoppage dating back to 2017. In addition to an impressive run that saw him knock out the previously unbeaten Erik Ortiz and veteran contenders Tre’Sean Wiggins and Saul Corral, Palmetta also defeated Yeis Solano by decision in October 2021 and most recently blasted out Thomas Mendez in three rounds last November.

Rodríguez (13-1-1, 12 KOs) has bounced back from his first career defeat, a majority decision loss to Kenneth Sims Jr., to knock out his last two opponents. His most recent fight came at The Armory, when he dispatched Juan Jose Velasco in the seventh round of their March 2022 clash on Showtime. The 27-year-old burst onto the scene with knockout victories in 10 of his first 11 fights and totaled an impressive five wins in 2020. Originally from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Rodríguez now lives and trains in Los Angeles, Calif.

Adorno (17-1-2, 14 KOs) enters this fight having won three-straight bouts, including a unanimous decision victory over previously unbeaten Hugo Alberto Roldan in September 2022 in the main event of SHOBOX: The New Generation. His current winning streak comes after dropping a March 2022 decision against then-undefeated Michel Rivera on Showtime, which followed an April 2021 draw against Jamaine Ortiz. The 23-year-old was born in Union City, N.J., and now resides in Allentown, Pa., and is trained by respected coach Raul “Chino” Rivas. Adorno turned pro in 2016 at the age of 17 after a standout amateur career where he amassed a 178-22 record and beat Shakur Stevenson twice. He has scored knockout victories in nine of his first 10 pro fights.

Jeremias Ponce: "Gonna Be High-Voltage Affair With Subrieal Matias; I’m Gonna Be Winner By KO"

“I do agree that the fight isn’t gonna reach the final bell,” Ponce told BS.com through a translator. “It’s gonna end by a knockout. But you know what I think the most? I’m gonna be the winner by knockout.”

“Subriel is a great fighter,” Ponce said, “someone that always comes out swinging, ready to fight, has a lot of heart. I really admire that from him.”

“It’s gonna be a high-voltage affair,” Ponce said. “The fans are gonna love it. I expect both of us to come out there, you know, with our heads up high, trying to be aggressive, and everyone’s gonna love what they see.”

Subriel Matias: “Dadashev’s Death Made Me Think It Could Happen To Me; Sorrow Never Leaves”

“It made me think it could happen to me,” Matias said, according to his translator. “It’s very present in my mind that anything could happen at any time. The sorrow never leaves. It’s sobering to see something like that, that you never want to see happen to people.”

“I prefer to remember him as a warrior that was beloved by his family,” Matias said. “And more than anything, I like to think that he’s resting in peace and that God had a plan for him. You can’t question God’s plan. And hopefully he is in a better place now.”
