Orthodox Christians observe a 40 day period of fasting before Easter.maverick23 wrote: ↑19 Jan 2023, 02:39I thought Usyk was an orthodox Christian?big lennox wrote: ↑18 Jan 2023, 19:57 My understanding is that Uysk was keen to box Fury in February with a cut off date of the 4th March because of a period of fasting for religious reasons.
But now I also understand that the 4th March date will come and go with no fight, and that they are looking at late March or early April, which would clash with Uysk's period of fasting.
I suppose the logical question is: when will we get the announcement that the fight isn't happening? Before the weekend or begining of next week?

I said May all along. I think the deal was in place depending on the Saudi cash coming through.

Yeah, I know. Christians are renowned for their fasting over the Christmas period.

If Tyson came out with this as an excuse the board would be in meltdown.

What, if he suddenly changed his religion to become an Orthodox Christian and observe their practice of fasting before Easter, thus making him unable to train properly for the undisputed title fight? Of course he'd get shit if he suddenly did that.
However, as already explained, Usyk had already made this requirement clear. It's not just sone sudden development.

Well then, just like December, he’s not available. Why should he demand the exact date? He is strictly the B side hence why he has had to travel all over the world to box.The Gratest wrote: ↑19 Jan 2023, 05:34 What, if he suddenly changed his religion to become an Orthodox Christian and observe their practice of fasting before Easter, thus making him unable to train properly for the undisputed title fight? His religion didn't prevent him fighting for the title in the States just before Easter v Michael Hunter, or just after Easter for a title v Andrei Kniazev.mickey1975 wrote: ↑19 Jan 2023, 05:52Well then, just like December, he’s not available. Look at the initial reports, it was both sides stating February to the start of March, not just Usyk's side. They were probably all made aware of Usyk's religious requirements, but now it appears that Fury's side are using those beliefs to escape. If it happens at a later date, then great, no problem. If it gets canned based on this and Fury retires or decides to take on someone else, then it certainly will not look good.
I get it you're completey devoted to Fury, which is admirable, but some of the things you come out with in defence, you're verging into parody at times.

It could be argued that Joshua already holds a win over Fury, as Fury opted to fight Chisora for a third time instead. He's now (hopefully) going in against one of the biggest heavyweights in history, he doesn't need to be diminished in any way.

I'll be honest the concession for him not fighting because of being an Orthodox Christian participating in fasting for 40 days prior to Easter is something I never heard until yesterday but I'm glad that people have looked at the record and seen that apparently wasn't an issue back when the Ukrainian was a Cruiserweight.BigDoofus wrote: ↑19 Jan 2023, 06:10His religion didn't prevent him fighting for the title in the States just before Easter v Michael Hunter, or just after Easter for a title v Andrei Kniazev.mickey1975 wrote: ↑19 Jan 2023, 05:52Well then, just like December, he’s not available. From what I have read both team Fury and team Usyk are waiting on Saudia Arabia and if they don't hear anything really soon they are going to shift all of their attention to Wembley instead.

What I believe is that, if he's going in against a guy who's weighing around 40-50lbs more than him, he will need to be at his strongest, and being stuck in the middle or end of a fasting regime which could weaken him, would not be good preparation.mickey1975 wrote: ↑19 Jan 2023, 08:32So you genuinely believe the fasting thing is good for a weight making division fighter? The Gratest wrote: ↑19 Jan 2023, 08:30 Another blinkered doughball that doesn't understand the concept of making weight. At cruiserweight, making weight, results in him being on an even par with his similarly sized opponents.
Fasting results in weight and muscle loss, both of which he'd need against Fury.
Would you like to see a weakened opponent facing a much larger and stronger opponent in what is the biggest unification title fight for a long time?
