Dad was a famous boxer, brought up around boxing, seen the trappings success in boxing brings....... given a healthy hoik up the ladder by his 'middle class' dad.

Yeah, I certainly can't fathom it......

Class bullshit really annoys me. I secretly love seeing a council estate kid getting a good pasting from a discreetly hard toff who he thought he could batter. Loads of boxers well over egg their rough upbringings anyway.

Ali’s dad was a sign painter and his mum was a house helper. They weren’t poor but certainly weren’t middle class.

I don’t remember what Leonard’s folks did but I don’t think they were wealthy/middle class either.

Class bullsh1t annoys you, but you love seeing a working class kid beat up a toff? That is class bullsh1t.

It also misses the whole point about drive and determination.

Any successful boxer (or NFL/MMA athlete) can be very rich early into their career and still have the desire to continue to succeed in their sport despite the obvious physical hurt it takes.

I know, it's still discriminating against someone based on their class.

I've read many quotes over the years saying differently:

"Sugar Ray Leonard was born on May 17, 1956, in North Carolina to a simple middle-class family. His father, Cicero Leonard, was a supermarket night manager, ..."

"[Boxer] Joe Frazier was a tough kid who came up out of poverty. [Boxer] George Foreman grew up in the ghetto, dirt poor. Ali was middle class. He didn't fit in with the world of a lot of other boxers"

Eric Morales is from a bad area of Tijuana and his dad wanted him scared out of the gym so told the trainer to put him into spar with the hardest bastards there, he beat them all up and earned his nickname El Terrible , Marco Antonio Barrera was well off with I think at least one parent being a dentist and they made him box because he was determined to be a fighter and they said then do it right

Both hard as fornicate

Boxing is considered a working class sport beause most boxers are from working class backgrounds because most gyms are in working class areas because it's a tried and true way to keep kids out of trouble in areas with low prospects , poverty and crime

It's not because somebody with money can't be hard

Unless they paid sign painters/house helpers good money in the 50s, the Clays were working class. Perhaps didn’t have the poverty that Frazier/Foreman had (from memory Frazier had about 10 siblings and his folks were crop pickers whilst Foreman had 5 or 6 siblings which would have been tough on any family financially).

There’s a difference between relatively ok financially (2 low but steady incomes for a family of 4) to being extremely poor. Both can still be working class though.

Middle class people aren’t millionaires.

My Mum was a dinner lady. I’m not a millionaire. But because I have a southern accent and like rugby union I’m middle class.

keith i think you need to re read my original post. you have it twisted round and your posts aren't making sense in relation to it. and its not discrimination against class, its discrimination against misjudged assumptions of someone assuming victory is assured due to their social positioning.

No. His dad was a builder and built a nice house. Sky exaggerated it with the lord of the manor thing.

It’s not so much about being hard. It’s more why box when you have other options. Eubank seems to love it though, must be in his DNA

'Middle Class' means different things in different parts of the world. In Latin America - middle class means eating regularly, living in a place with indoor plumbing and being able to buy new clothes.
