Norton-Young
Norton-Young
This fight was close....seemed a draw to me....just reviewed it again.
Hard as hell to see a winner on this one. Any thoughts? Two Judges saw it for Norton one for Young....I don't think I'd go so far as to blast the judging.

It could have been scored for either Norton or Young. It was extremely close. It was also surprisingly entertaining fight; and one that for some reason or another you rarely hear people talk about.
Young was unlucky with the judges; the Ali fight was very close as well. If memory serves me correct, the first fight he had with Ocasio could have gone his way as well.

I have also heard the conspiracy theory that Jimmy Young 'wore the cuffs' against Norton. As the powers that be deemed Norton a bigger money fighter than the skilled but far less 'crowd pleasing' style of the late Jimmy Young.
Myself I find that hard to believe in the sence that if Young was 'in on the fix' he didn't do a very good job as he nearly won the fight.
One thing I am certain of is that the Norton loss broke Youngs heart and desire as far as Boxing was concerned.

The fight was broadcast live by ABC -- those were the good old days.
Anyway, the fight was extrememly close and I had Young winning by a small margin, but the fight was so close it could have gone either way. It seems highly unlikely that the fight was fixed since it was so close, un less the implication that it was fixed with the officials.

I felt Norton won by a small margin, as Young lacked the aggressiveness and power needed to win some rounds. Its subjective, do you go for whoever controlled the fight and landed the harder blows, or for the guy who landed a few more jabs? I'd like to see the fight again to get a fresh view.
Young had his moments against Ali. Round nine was a wild affair. Young caught Ali with a punch, and Ali was somehow on Queer Street. Howard Cossell was going nuts. In the end, Young did not do enough to win the match vs Ali either.

Just to clarify which part of the post are you talking about? The Great John L wrote:Quite a few think otherwise.pound per pound wrote:Young had his moments against Ali. Round nine was a wild affair. Are you saying that you feel Young beat Ali? That is debatable.
It was close on the cards. I can understand and agree with a comment here that quite a few think otherwise.
However Young clearly hurt Ali in round 9 of their fight. Do you agree or disagree with this portion of the post?

I was saying that quite a few think that Young did do enough to win the fight. However, since you’ve asked -- it’s been years since I’ve seen the Ali-Young fight, but I don’t recall Young clearly hurting Ali. Not saying it didn’t happen, just that I don’t remember it happening. Anyone else?pound per pound wrote:Just to clarify which part of the post are you talking about? The Great John L wrote:Quite a few think otherwise.pound per pound wrote:Young had his moments against Ali. Oh yes, Cossell going nuts doesn't really mean much, since he seldom understood what was happening in the ring.
