Rey Vargas, O'Shaquie Foster Reach Terms For Vacant WBC Title Fight, Avoid Purse Bid

The currently available WBC junior lightweight title won’t remain vacant for long.

Boxing Scene has learned that the teams representing Rey Vargas and O’Shaquie Foster have reached a deal for their ordered vacant title fight, thus avoiding a purse bid hearing. The two sides were given 30 days to negotiate terms for their matchup, managing to find common ground well before the November 8 deadline.

Neither a date nor location was firmly established as this goes to publish. BS.com has learned, however, that the fight is expected to take place in the first quarter of 2023 on a Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) event.

Mexico’s Vargas fights under the PBC banner. Houston’s Foster is with Probellum, co-founded by Richard Schaefer who has always enjoyed a strong relationship with PBC creator Al Haymon.

The WBC and WBO belts became available when Shakur Stevenson (19-0, 9KOs) was stripped after failing to make weight ahead of a September 23 unanimous decision win over Robson Conceicao.

Vargas (36-0, 22KOs)—an unbeaten two-division and reigning WBC featherweight titlist—submitted a request which was unanimously approved by The WBC Board of Governors to challenge for the vacant WBC junior lightweight title. It meant having to enter talks with Foster (19-2, 11KOs), who has resurrected his career and is presently among the top 130-pound contenders in the world.

The development came in lieu of a rumored WBC/WBA featherweight title unification bout with four-division and reigning WBA ‘Super’ 126-pound titlist Leo Santa Cruz that was eyed for this fall. The bout was presented to the WBA as a done deal, as means for Santa Cruz and WBA ‘World’ featherweight titleholder Leigh Wood to avoid a title consolidation clash.

Those plans backfired when Wood suffered an injury which canceled his planned fight with Mauricio ‘Bronco’ Lara, while Santa Cruz-Vargas never made its way to the schedule.

With the fallout, Vargas moved on to unexpected plans of becoming a three-division titlist. The 31-year-old from Otumba, Mexico previously held the WBC junior featherweight title from February 2017 through August 2020, when he was downgraded to Champion in Recess after a broken leg kept him out of the ring for all of 2020.

Vargas officially moved up to featherweight beginning with a ten-round win over countryman Leonardo Baez last November 5 in Las Vegas, then going on to outpoint unbeaten Mark Magsayo to win the WBC featherweight title in his most recent fight on July 9 in San Antonio.

Foster (19-2, 11KOs) is currently riding a nine-fight win streak dating back to 2017. The 29-year-old Houston native has advanced to the number-one position in the WBC junior lightweight rankings following a knockout win over Miguel Roman in November 2019 and a lopsided points victory over then-unbeaten Muhammadkhuja Yaqubov on March 18 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The winner of the forthcoming title fight will be required to make two mandatory title defenses per WBC by-laws covering vacant title fights.

The status of Vargas' WBC featherweight title is expected to be addressed during the sanctioning body's upcoming annual convention from November 6-11 in Acapulco, Mexico.

Winner of this will fight Eduardo ‘Rocky’ Hernandez.

The WBC ordered a second final eliminator between Robson Conceicao and Muhammadkhuja Yaqubov.

Press Release

Tickets are on sale now to see two-division world champion Rey Vargas and top contender O’Shaquie Foster battle for the vacant WBC Super Featherweight World Championship on Saturday, February 11 live on SHOWTIME from the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas in a Premier Boxing Champions event.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by TGB Promotions, are on sale now and are available through Ticketmaster.com.

After an extended run at 122 pounds and following a tough performance to become a 126-pound world champion in his last outing, Vargas will look to add his name next to the likes of Julio Cesar Chavez, Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera and more on the list of Mexican champions to win titles in three divisions. He will get all he can handle from Foster, who has won nine-straight fights to put himself in position to fight for the title.

Vargas (36-0, 22 KOs) was last seen in action back July, when he got off the floor to secure a decision win Mark Magsayo over twelve rounds of action.

Foster (19-2, 11 KOs) saw action in Dubai back in March, when he pounded out a twelve round decision over unbeaten Muhammadkhuja Yaqubov in a scrap for the WBC silver title.

Subriel Matias-Jeremias Ponce Set For February 25 In Minneapolis; Part Of Showtime Card

Subriel Matias and Jeremias Ponce have a date and a site for their 140-pound title fight.

Boxing Scene has learned that Matias and Ponce will square off for the vacant IBF junior welterweight title February 25 at The Armory in Minneapolis. Showtime will televise their 12-round bout as part of a tripleheader, the second of two “Showtime Championship Boxing” broadcasts in February.

Puerto Rico’s Matias (18-1, 18 KOs) and Argentina’s Ponce (30-0, 20 KOs) will fight for an IBF belt that undisputed 140-pound champion Josh Taylor relinquished August 23.

The bout between Ponce, the IBF’s number one contender, and the second-ranked Matias was supposed to be a final eliminator to determine the IBF’s mandatory challenger for one of Taylor’s titles. The IBF approved Ponce-Matias as a championship match once Scotland’s Taylor (19-0, 13 KOs) gave up its junior welterweight title and eventually ordered a purse bid.

TGB Promotions won an IBF purse bid November 15 to earn the right to promote Ponce-Matias. Its winning bid of $510,000, submitted on behalf of Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions, was the only offer made that day.

The 30-year-old Matias, who is affiliated with Haymon’s PBC, hasn’t fought in nearly a year.

The knockout artist avenged his lone loss in his most recent bout, which resulted in a technical knockout of Petros Ananyan (17-3-2, 8 KOs) last January 22 at Borgata Event Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Armenia’s Ananyan declined to continue after a ninth round in which he was knocked down.

Ananyan upset Matias by unanimous decision in February 2020. Matias got off the canvas from a seventh-round knockdown in that bout, but he lost their 10-rounder on all three scorecards at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Ponce, who will end a 10-month layoff of his own, produced his most noteworthy win in June 2021. He dropped British contender Lewis Ritson (then 21-1) three times on his way to a 10-round, technical-knockout victory in that bout at Vertu Motors Arena in Newcastle England, Ritson’s hometown.

Two weeks before its February 25 telecast, Showtime will air a tripleheader February 11 from Alamodome in San Antonio. Mexico’s Rey Vargas (36-0, 22 KOs), who has held the WBC’s 126-pound and 122-pound championships, and Houston’s O’Shaquie Foster (19-2, 11 KOs) will fight for the vacant WBC 130-pound crown in the 12-round main event that night.

The height of Rey Vargas has been left grossly incorrect for several years
https://boxrec.com/en/proboxer/542148

it should be 5 ft 10 1⁄2 in (179 cm or 178cm)
I am very concerned about the continued spread of misinformation.

5′ 7½″ / 172cm The data in the PBC's official profile data is taken from Boxrec and is not meaningful to consider here.

Pero-Faust, and the return of Mario Barrios, also on this card. Quite like the heavyweight fight, the last time I saw Faust he had an absolutely epic fight with Kiladze I believe?

Press Release | Barrios vs. Santiago, Pero vs. Faust Set

Undefeated two-division world champion Rey Vargas will battle top 130-pound contender O’Shaquie Foster for the vacant WBC Super Featherweight World Championship in a showdown that headlines action live on SHOWTIME Saturday, February 11 from the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas topping a Premier Boxing Champions event.

The Showtime telecast begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and also features former champion and all-action San Antonio-native Mario “El Azteca” Barrios, now trained by top trainer Bob Santos, returning to the ring in a 10-round welterweight duel against Jovanie Santiago that serves as the co-main event. Kicking off the action, hard-hitting unbeaten heavyweights go toe-to-toe as Cuba’s Lenier Pero takes on Ukraine’s Viktor Faust in a 10-round attraction.

The 27-year-old Barrios (26-2, 17 KOs) returns to the ring after challenging former unified welterweight champion Keith Thurman in February 2022, dropping a decision in a hard-fought clash. The San Antonio-product, who now trains with Santos, a top coach, in Las Vegas, became a 140-pound world champion in September 2019, using his aggressive style to edge out Batyr Akhmedov and earn a unanimous decision. Barrios lost the super lightweight title in another action packed, highly competitive bout, as he was defeated by three-division and five-time world champion Gervonta Davis in June 2021.

“Everyone knows I come with everything I got when I step into the ring, and I’m excited to be back for this big opportunity on Showtime,” said Barrios. “I’m even more motivated knowing that I get to fight back at home in San Antonio and give my people a great fight. Everyone is going to see pure boxing entertainment as I’ll be putting my skills on display with bad intentions. I’ve proven that I’m a warrior every time I get into the ring and I’m bringing that same energy for Santiago.”

Born in Bayamon, Puerto Rico and now residing in Dorado, Santiago (14-2-1, 10 KOs) impressed in his U.S. debut in February 2021 despite losing a competitive decision against four-division champion Adrien Broner on SHOWTIME. The 31-year-old followed that up in May challenging top 140-pound contender Gary Antuanne Russell in a bout he lost by sixth-round stoppage. Prior to those fights, Santiago had won four of five contests by knockout, a streak that followed a 10-round decision triumph over DeMarcus Corley in 2017. Santiago’s only blemish before the Broner fight was a majority draw in just his third pro contest.

“This is going to be a very exciting fight,” said Santiago. “I’m ready to go in there and throw a lot of punches. Barrios and I are both looking to bounce back from losses and show that we’re elite fighters. That’s going to make this an action-packed fight and I know that I have everything it takes to leave with my hand raised. The fans in San Antonio can expect us to give it our all from start to finish.”

A 2016 Olympian from Camaguey, Cuba, Pero (8-0, 5 KOs) had an extensive and highly successful amateur career that spanned over 100 fights, including multiple victories over countryman Frank Sanchez and efforts against heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk, heavyweight prospect Filip Hrgovic and Olympic Gold Medalist Bakhodir Jalolov. The 30-year-old now fights out of Miami, Fla., and made a successful U.S. debut on New Year’s Day 2022, defeating then-unbeaten Geovany Bruzon. He’s added two more victories since then, most recently knocking out Joel Caudle in a bout streamed via the SHOWTIME Sports YouTube channel and SHOWTIME Boxing Facebook page in August.

“I’m really looking forward to making my Showtime debut on February 11,” said Pero. “Ever since I started boxing, I’ve been working toward my goal of becoming the first Cuban heavyweight world champion. Faust is a good opponent, and this is by far the biggest fight of my career. A victory will skyrocket my career and put me in a great position. I’m going to seize this moment and bring home a victory for my people in Cuba.”

Faust (11-0, 7 KOs) returns to fight in the U.S. after his last stateside outing saw him engage in one of 2022’s most unpredictable and fast-paced slugfests. The 30-year-old squared off with Iago Kiladze in January 2022 with both men hitting the canvas an astonishing five times combined in less than five minutes of action before the Ukrainian closed out the action in round two to earn a TKO. Faust has followed that up with decision wins over veteran title challenger Kevin Johnson in August and Franklin Lawrence in December before he returns to fight in the U.S. for the third time.

“This is a great opportunity for me to show off my talents in the U.S.,” said Faust. “I’m especially happy to be back against a great opponent like Pero. He was a good amateur, and I know we’ll both be very confident heading into this fight. I’m going to win and show everyone that I’m ready to do everything possible to reach my goal and become world champion.”

Press Release | Eumir Marcial To Return

Eumir Felix Marcial, the Philippines' 2021 middleweight Olympic Bronze medalist, is intent on making his 2023 return to the pro ranks a coming out party. A native of Zamboanga, Philippines, Marcial (3-0, 1 KO), eschewed holiday celebrations to set up camp and train in Las Vegas with head coach Jorge Capetillo.

Marcial, 27, returns to the ring, in a six-round middleweight bout, Saturday, Feb. 11, in San Antonio's Alamodome, on the undercard of the O'Shaquie Foster - Rey Vargas WBO world jr. lightweight title battle, which will be televised live on Showtime. Marcial's opponent will be announced soon.

Since making his professional debut in 2020, Marcial has run the table, defeating Andrew Whitfield and Steven Pichardo by unanimous decision and stopping Isiah Hart in the fourth round, balancing those fights with his amateur career, which has included training for numerous tournaments and the Tokyo Olympics.

In the Hart battle, which was Marcial's second professional bout, the Filipino warrior displayed the composure of a seasoned veteran to score a TKO of Hart (6-3-1, 4 KOs), at the 47-second mark of the fourth-round despite getting knocked down three times himself, once in the first round and twice in the second round, in a firefight bout scheduled for six rounds. That's a lot of experience to get for a fighter in only his second professional fight. Whitfield, Hart, and Pichardo boasted a combined record of 17-5-1, 8 KOs, when they fought Marcial.

"I look forward to focusing on my professional career and I am very excited to be fighting in San Antonio, which is not just a great fight town but also where my promoter Manny Pacquiao made ring history," said Marcial.

"I have learned a lot in my last three professional fights. I have had a very productive training camp and I cannot wait to show off what I have learned on February 11. My three goals are to work hard, to win, and to become a world champion. And thank you to all my fans for their continued support. I fight for them and to bring honor to the Philippines."

After winning his pro debut -- a four-round unanimous decision over Andrew Whitfield in Los Angeles on Dec. 16, 2020 -- Marcial turned his attention to getting prepared for the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo. In one of the most exciting bouts of the 2021 summer games, Marcial and top-seeded Oleksandr Khyzhniak, of Ukraine, battled tooth and nail in their semifinal battle. Khyzhniak, who would move on to win the Silver medal, pulled it out in the third and final round by the narrowest of margins. Marcial won the Bronze. Another high-water mark in Marcial's amateur career was capturing a Silver medal at the 2019 World Boxing Championships.

"Eumir is a very special fighter. Unless you are part of his inner circle, you have no idea how hard it has been to constantly shift training from amateur to professional styles every year," said Sean Gibbons, President of MP Promotions. "Yet Eumir does it without a complaint because in his heart, he's spurred on by his need to bring honor to the Philippines and Filipinos around the world. Manny and I are so proud of how Eumir has handled the pressure. Now he can focus on his professional career, and I am confident his true talent will be on full display on February 11 at the Alamodome."

Rey Vargas: "Foster Knows I'm Not Just Anybody; Sure He Has Lost Plenty Of Sleep Being Nervous"

“He knows I’m not just anybody,” Vargas said through a translator Thursday during their press conference at The Westin San Antonio North. “And I’m sure that he has lost plenty of sleep being nervous and anxious about having to face me. So, you know, he better be ready and also be ready to use that southpaw stance that he likes to use. I’m well aware that he likes to use both orthodox and southpaw, but I also have a strategy in place to counter anything that he might have in mind.”

“Indeed, O’Shaquie is a quality fighter, someone with an Olympic style,”
Vargas said. “I have fought against many opponents that have presented many different challenges. But what I have seen from O’Shaquie is that he has kind of veered from his path, doing some things differently ahead of this fight. I might say that he’s pressing a bit ahead of the challenge that’s coming up on Saturday.”
