Press Release

Two of the most aggressive, forward-pressing super bantamweights in boxing will face off in a 12-round WBC Eliminator on Saturday, February 18.

Former two-division world champion Luis “Pantera” Nery (33-1, 25 KOs) of Tijuana, Mexico will face Azat “Crazy A” Hovhannisyan (21-3, 17 KOs) of Los Angeles by way of Yerevan, Armenia in a matchup where the winner will be one step closer to a coveted opportunity to fight for a world championship. The event, presented in association with Zanfer Boxing, is scheduled to take place at Fox Theater Pomona and will be broadcast worldwide on DAZN beginning at 5:00 p.m. PST/ 8:00 p.m. EST.

“I am ready for the next challenge and prove yet again that I am the best, super bantamweight in the world,” said Nery. “Azat Hovhannisyan is an experienced and high-quality opponent, but the reality is that I’m ranked number 1 by the WBC and if I win this fight I will be ready to challenge Stephen Fulton or Murodjon Akhmadaliev so they can no longer avoid me. See you on February 18, Luis Nery is here for the long haul."

Information on the undercard will be shared soon.

Nery represents the tough fighters that have come from the ranks of Tijuana, Mexico. The 28-year-old is a former two-division world champion with a nearly spotless record - his only blemish against Brandon Figueroa in May 2021 that saw him lose his WBA and WBC World Super Bantamweight titles. Since then, he has been on a vengeance to get back to the top, securing the WBC Silver and WBO Inter-Continental Super Bantamweight titles in his fight against Carlos Castro in February 2022 and then a third-round knockout against David Carmona in October 2022.

“I have a lot of respect for Luis,” said Hovhannisyan. “He’s a former world champion and a very talented fighter. I know I’m going to have to do everything I can to win.”

Hovhannisyan hails from Yerevan, Armenia and has steadily climbed the ranks to make a name for himself in his division. The 34-year-old “Crazy A” has earned the respect of the LA fight scene with his impressive, aggressive forward style. His last string of fights since challenging unsuccessfully for the WBC Super Bantamweight Championship title against Rey Vargas have all ended in knockout wins aside from a solid unanimous decision victory against Jose Santos Gonzalez in July 2021. Currently ranked No. 2 by the WBC, No.1 by the WBA, No.3 by the WBO and No. 4 by The Ring, Hovhannisyan is on the doorstep of another world championship opportunity.

“On February 18, you will see two hungry fighters who have been waiting for their chance at another opportunity to be at the top of their division,” said Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya. "You will see Hovhannisyan live up to his name as “Crazy A” and pull out all the stops against Nery in this title eliminator to get a step closer to becoming a world champion.”

"We are very excited to have Nery back in the United States this February 18,” said CEO of Zanfer Boxing Fernando Beltran. “This fight is a great challenge for Luis, but he is at the top of his game and has not stopped preparing. I am sure that Nery will show why he is one of the best fighters in his division and that he can beat anyone."

Press Release | Shane Mosley Jr. vs. Mario Lozano Added

The undercard for Nery vs. Hovhannisyan has been finalized to support a main event matchup with potential “fight of the year” contender status written all over it. Former two-division world champion Luis “Pantera” Nery (33-1, 25 KOs) of Tijuana, Mexico and Azat “Crazy A” Hovhannisyan (21-3, 17 KOs) of Los Angeles by way of Yerevan, Armenia will fight in a 12-round WBC Super Bantamweight Title Eliminator match to get one step closer to a coveted opportunity to fight for a world championship.

The event, presented in association with Zanfer Boxing, is scheduled to take place at Fox Theater Pomona and will be broadcast worldwide on DAZN beginning at 5:00 p.m. PST/ 8:00 p.m. EST.

In the co-main event, Shane Mosley, Jr. (18-4, 10 KOs) will return to the ring after successfully defeating Gabe Rosado via majority decision last April 2022. Mosley, Jr. will fight in a 10-round super middleweight fight against Chihuahua, Mexico’s Mario “Aguila” Lozano (33-10, 24 KOs). Lozano is coming off of a long layoff after a valiant effort against Liam “Beefy” Smith in August 2019.

Also on the DAZN card, Ricardo “El Niño” Sandoval (20-2, 15 KOs) of Rialto will participate in a 10-round flyweight bout against Jerson Ortiz (17-6, 8 KOs) of Managua, Nicaragua. Sandoval will be attempting to avenge his loss against David Jimenez last July 2022. Opening up the DAZN broadcast, Rowdy “Legend” Montgomery (8-4-1, 6 KOs) of Victorville will face Christian “Ruso” Olivas (22-8, 19 KOs) of San Ysidro in an eight-round super middleweight match.

For the Nery vs. Hovhannisyan preliminary bouts, Asa “Ace” Stevens (3-0, 1 KO) of Waianae, Hawaii will fight Cesar Sustaita (3-6, 3 KOs) of Chihuahua, Mexico in a four-round super bantamweight match. His Hawaiian counterpart, Dalis Kaleiopu (3-0, 3 KOs), also of Waianae will face Erick Garcia (4-3, 1 KO) of Guadalajara, Mexico in a four-round lightweight fight. Opening up the night, Odessa, Ukraine’s Andrii Novytski will make his pro-debut against Gabriel Costa (1-3) of Woburn, Missouri in a four-round heavyweight scrap.

Press Release

With only days left for their WBC Super Bantamweight Eliminator main event, Luis “Pantera” Nery (33-1, 25 KOs) of Tijuana, Mexico and Azat “Crazy A” Hovhannisyan (21-3, 17 KOs) of Los Angeles by way of Yerevan, Armenia hosted a press conference today to discuss their 12-round fight.

The event is set to take place on Saturday, February 18 at Fox Theater Pomona and is presented in association with Zanfer Boxing. The event will be broadcast worldwide on DAZN beginning at 5:00 p.m. PST/ 8:00 p.m. EST.

Also on hand were members of the undercard to give comments. In the co-main event, Shane Mosley, Jr. (18-4, 10 KOs) will fight in a 10-round super middleweight fight against Chihuahua, Mexico’s Mario “Aguila” Lozano (33-10, 24 KOs). Ricardo “El Niño” Sandoval (20-2, 15 KOs) of Rialto will participate in a 10-round flyweight bout against Jerson Ortiz (17-6, 8 KOs) of Managua, Nicaragua. Opening up the DAZN broadcast, Rowdy “Legend” Montgomery (8-4-1, 6 KOs) of Victorville will face Christian “Ruso” Olivas (22-8, 19 KOs) of San Ysidro in an eight-round super middleweight match.

This is what the participants had to say:

LUIS “PANTERA” NERY, FORMER TWO-DIVISION WORLD CHAMPION:
“First and foremost I would like to thank Oscar De La Hoya, Golden Boy Promotions and DAZN for making this fight a possibility. I feel very happy to return to the ring for a big event that awaits for us on Saturday. I want to thank Zanfer Boxing, Fernando Beltran, and Abraham Perez for always supporting me.

“It’s going to be a great fight. Azat is a great fighter. I have been watching him for a long time. He is a strong fighter – he throws punches and has resilience in the ring and has never been knocked out before. These are the types of challenges that I like to have that make me a better fighter.”

AZAT “CRAZY A” HOVHANNISYAN, SUPER BANTAMWEIGHT WORLD TITLE CONTENDER:
“Hello everyone, I am in good shape, I had a very good training camp. Everything is very good. We are ready for February 18.

I know Luis Nery. He is a good fighter with a good left hand. I have a great new coach named Julian Chua. We are ready to put on a good show.”

SHANE MOSLEY, JR., SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHT FIGHTER:
“I’m feeling great. I want to thank Golden Boy, Oscar, DAZN, the Fox Theater and to everyone involved. I am very excited to be fighting in my hometown – where I was born, where I grew up. It’s an honor to fight here and hopefully I get to do it again in the future.

“I have a good, strong veteran in front of me coming after me, trying to deter me in my hometown that I have to defend. And if all goes well, keep pushing up the ladder like Bernard said. I thank you guys for being here. It’s going to be a great night.”

MARIO “AGUILA” LOZANO, SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHT FIGHTER:
“Good afternoon and thank you for the opportunity. We feel very good. We had a good preparation for this fight. When they offered us this fight, it gave us great pleasure to know they had considered us for a great fighter like Shane Mosley, Jr. We are ready to leave everything on the ring.”

OSCAR DE LA HOYA, CHAIRMAN AND CEO OF GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS:
“This main event fight was made by the actual fighters positioning themselves, and putting themselves in this place. This is an eliminator for the WBC – we have the No. 1 and No. 2 fighting each other which is unheard of in boxing these days – but that’s what Luis Nery and Azat Hovhannisyan bring to the table. They are old school, they are fighters who understand exactly what it takes to become a world champion. It’s never an easy road. But winning, and going down that road and performing gets you to the big prize of winning a world title.”

BERNARD HOPKINS, GOLDEN BOY PARTNER:
“You fight inside the ring, we fight outside for you. We’re rooting for you to get to the top of the ladder. Golden Boy is here to stay. We have an exciting fight night with this eliminator. All fighters should be working towards elimination, to bigger venues, to bigger crowds, to bigger opportunities.”

MAURICIO LOPEZ DE CARDENAS, ZANFER BOXING:
“On behalf of Fernando Beltran and the Zanfer Boxing team I want to thank Oscar and the Golden Boy team, DAZN, the media and the fans for this. It feels great to be back in the United States with Luis Nery.

“Nery has had a very good preparation for this fight. He spent an enormous time away from his family and friends to train in Mexico City for this fight. We are very sure that Nery is prepared for this fight and is ready to fight anyone.”

I've got Azat winning by stoppage. Nery is no longer a confident fighter after getting slept by Brandon Figueroa and really can't mesh offense and defensive. He appears fragile. He tries to employ a shoulder roll but also uses his legs to get away. He doesn't throw any punches when defending, no counters. So if he is being pressed he has no offense. Also his power is meh at the higher weight class. Azat is super motivated and confident, throws like a Gatling (along with body attack). Azat is the bigger puncher and Nery will not be able to move all night. Azat by 9 round TKO.

Mosley Jr. wasting too many shots and thus giving Lozano (three and a half years out and 36 yo) an opportunity to look as if he was the gatekeeper of many years ago...
