Whcih boxer has the best three wins at welterweight ?

Post by Ambling Alp II »

Stealing this from Keithmoon, who started threads for other weight classes.

This should be interesting.

I don't really have time to research this in depth right now, but I'd think the names to look into would be Robinson, Armstrong, Leonard, Mayweather.

I'm sure there's other guys who'd have some marquee wins. This has often been a talent rich division throughout Boxing history.

SRL gotta be up there, Benitez (38-0-1), Duran (72-1) and Hearns (32-0) and stopped all three.

You can't top Leonard's - Benitez, Duran and Hearns.

Robinson is close - Gavilan, LaMotta, and probably Zivic.

Gavilan's win over Williams doesn't quite belong there. Williams was small for a welter and never beat any welterweight worth mentioning. Obviously, Graham and Basilio are major wins.

Armstrong is worth a shout - Ross, Arizmendi, and Garcia.

I wasn't necessarily implying his 3 best wins would stack up with the others, just saying we might oughta mention his 3 biggest wins on account of he's such a big name in modern times.

For him I suppose it'd be Pac, Mosley and Maidana I guess?

Hatton was more decorated, but I'd say Maidana was a better and more dangerous Welterweight. Juan Manuel Marquez could be argued as being the #3 guy too.

De la Hoya beat Pernell, JCC and Camacho. JCC and Camacho were past it, but he also beat Carr and Quartey and was robbed against Tito.

Carr, Quartey were nice wins and as you mention he should have had Trinidad. Whittaker was not in his prime but still had something left. Glad that you pointed out that other guys past; we need to take that into consideration when doing this.

People already mentioned Ray Leonard and De La Hoya so I’ll throw in a sleeper pick:Marlon Starling. He has wins over an undefeated Simon Brown(21-0, 15 KO’s), an undefeated Mark Breland(18-0, 12 KO’s), and won the lineal welterweight title in a very dominant performance against a prime Lloyd Honeyghan(33-1, 22 KO’s).

Really underrated fighter IMO, no idea how he’s not in the hall of fame, or even on the ballot.

Watching several of Starling’s fights a few months ago was interesting because of his style. High-guard with very solid punching power, kinda reminded me of Arthur Abraham at his best, but with more finesse. Really would be interesting to see a fighter like that in the modern welterweight division.

Not a big SRL fan, but benitez; Hearns; and Duran is a pretty damn good top 3.
