Choosing a Jack Dempsey biography
Choosing a Jack Dempsey biography
I'd like to read a bio of Dempsey-can anyone here suggest which one is best ? I read Randy Roberts' book years ago and wasn't impressed by it.
What about Dempsey's 1977 autobiography ? Is it worth the time ?

I read "Dempsey",his autobiography as told to Bob Considine published in 1959.Like most autobiographies it puts the subject in a good light.Too self serving.

Re: Choosing a Jack Dempsey biography
ROUND BY ROUND was Jack Dempsey's first auto-biography, published in 1940.
I think that was the best.
It concentrated more on his fights then the later ones.
( it used to be expensive to get a used original HC copy, but it has been re-printed in SC since.
he did two more auto-biographies after that.

IMOP Randy Roberts basically re-hashes in his books what has already been written before.
the book he did on Joe Louis, wasn't anything new or revealing in it. A total disappointment.
( matter of fact. I sent it back to Amazon on the first day I got it )
another good autobiography of Jack Dempsey
is DEMPSY (published in 1977.)
It was co-written by his daughter
I think that was his third and last autobiography.
( he was 82 yrs old in 1977 )

I don't have a Dempsey Bio, but I have Championship Fighting written by Dempsey himself where he gives tips for Technique and training tips and sh*t. It's pretty cool.
Don't know how much use I get out of it in my personal life, but it's something I'm proud to have.

Probably. I didn't check the date on the book, but I mean being written by Dempsey it would make sense that it was around that time period.HomicideHenry wrote: ↑28 Jan 2023, 02:19Isn't that the military manual, basically, that Dempsey put together during ww2?gilgamesh wrote: ↑28 Jan 2023, 02:10 I don't have a Dempsey Bio, but I have Championship Fighting written by Dempsey himself where he gives tips for Technique and training tips and sh*t. Re: Choosing a Jack Dempsey biography
The last one that I read of him was the one by Roger Kahn. It was pretty good, though probably not the best one. One thing that seems to be different is the account of the Flynn fight early in his career. In a book that read when I was kid, it said that Dempsey's brother was hid chief second and that he threw in the towel, and he shouldn't have. Dempsey himself said that. In other books, there is no reference to his brother stopping it all. In fact, it's often listed as him being counted out.
Some books about him focus on his title fights, while others spend more time on his fights on the way up.
He was an interesting character. He said some interesting things in Peter Heller's book where he interviewed dozens of champions.

Re: Choosing a Jack Dempsey biography
I've read lots of interviews with Dempsey in old newspaper articles. Very interesting guy.

Re: Choosing a Jack Dempsey biography
so which title did you decide to get anyway ?
Personally, as I had mentioned. I would get Dempsey's first autobiography
ROUND BY ROUND ( published in 1940)
also this book was re-printed a few years ago,
( on re-cycled paper)
but if I were you, I would try and get a original 1940 copy
( you can get one for under 20 dollars over at Abebooks.com)
maybe not in best condition and without a dust jacket,
but that is history there dude.
Its a 45 year old Jack Dempsey talking directly to YOU
over Time and Space from 83 years ago !
also some cool photos in it that I have not seen anywhere else.
Jack Dempsey bagging an Elk in the wilds !
and a action photo of Dempsey tearing into 6 ft 6 " Fred Fulton aka the Minnesota Giant.
also as a bonus, the last few pages he gives some boxing instructions (in silloutet figures too )

Re: Choosing a Jack Dempsey biography
I just wonder sometimes, that if
This possibly could have been Jack Dempsey's Agent's and the Book Publisher's "idea" to help promote his new book ,ROUND BY ROUND back then.
in an effort to get the 45 yr old Jack Dempsey name in the "Head-Lines" once again and sell more copies.
(as his autobiography was scheduled for release September.16.1940)
