Alexis Rocha To Headline Jan. 28 DAZN Show In Greater Los Angeles Area

Alexis Rocha will headline DAZN’s first stateside show of the new year.

BS.com has learned that Golden Boy Promotions and DAZN have finalized plans for a January 28 show, kicking off an aggressive scheduling stretch for the sports streaming platform. Rocha will face Atlantic City’s Anthony Young in the main event from the state-of-the-art YouTube Theater in Inglewood, California.

Further details on the card are not available as this goes to publish. Representatives from Golden Boy and DAZN did not respond to inquiries seeking comment or confirmation.

The date was originally reserved for Ryan Garcia, who was due to face Mercito Gesta in a stay-busy fight ahead of his planned springtime superfight versus Gervonta Davis. Garcia opted out of the date, preferring to go straight into a fight with Davis (27-0, 25 KOs). The move left Golden Boy to search for a new main event to preserve its first fight date of 2023.

Rocha (21-1, 13 KOs) will reap the benefits, as he will fight for the fifth time in a span of just over 14 months. The 25-year-old southpaw from Irvine, California enjoyed a breakthrough year in 2022, posting three wins including a ninth-round knockout of unbeaten Blair Cobbs on March 19 in Los Angeles.

In his most recent start, Rocha outpointed Jesus Antonio Perez over ten rounds last October 29 at Pechanga Arena in San Diego. The feat extended his win streak to five in a row since a narrow twelve-round defeat to Rashidi Ellis in October 2020.

Young (24-2, 8 KOs) has mostly fought out of his Atlantic City hometown but traveled west for the biggest win of his career. It came on a Golden Boy-promoted show, as the streaking bubble contender scored a third-round knockout of former WBO junior middleweight titlist Sadam Ali on the May 2019 Canelo Alvarez-Daniel Jacobs undercard in Las Vegas.

The victory was as much of a curse as it was a career rival. The combination of the pandemic and his high-risk, low-reward profile left Young out of the ring for more than two years, as he’s fought just three times since beating Ali. He enters this fight following an eight round points win over Jose Zaragoza last October 29 in Atlantic City.

Press Release | Undercard Information

Golden Boy will kickstart 2023 with Santa Ana’s very own ace Alexis “Lex” Rocha (21-1, 13 KOs) is scheduled to defend his NABO Welterweight Title and level up against Atlantic City, New Jersey’s Anthony “Juice” Young (24-2, 8 KOs) in a 12-round main event presented in association with Hard Hitting Promotions. The welterweights will go head-to-head on Saturday, January 28 at YouTube Theater in Inglewood, and the event will be broadcast worldwide on DAZN beginning at 5:00 p.m. PST / 8:00 p.m. EST.

“January 28th marks my first fight of 2023 and a fight that will set the stage for my best year yet. I have patiently worked to reach the point of being the main event on a major card and now I’m here,” said Alexis Rocha. “2022 provided its challenges, as I had to overcome a hand injury, but it made me stronger. I can’t wait to start the year with a knockout victory and as always, I’m thankful to Golden Boy, Robert Diaz, Abraham Perez and SOA Boxing, DAZN, my coach Hector and my entire team for the opportunity and support. Now it’s time to put on a show.”

“I’m just thankful for the opportunity to perform on this platform,” said Anthony Young. “With the beliefs and strength of Allah we are going to shock the world twice.”

“We are excited to welcome Alexis ‘Lex’ Rocha to defend his title against Anthony Young for the first boxing event at YouTube Theater and Hollywood Park on January 28,” said Jason Gannon, managing director, SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park. “YouTube Theater’s intimate setting will create a great atmosphere for the fans, and we look forward to hosting more boxing events across Hollywood Park in the future.”

The co-main event for the night will feature a special, blue-chip prospect inching his way up into world contender status - Austin, Texas’s Floyd “Kid Austin” Schofield (12-0, 10 KOs) - who will participate in a 10-round match against Humacao, Puerto Rico’s Alberto Mercado (16-1-1, 3 KOs) which is presented in association with Davies Entertainment. Schofield and Mercado will battle it out for the vacant WBA International Lightweight Title.

Also on the DAZN broadcast is a 12-round WBO Minimumweight World Title Eliminator fight presented in association with Cotto Promotions, which will be a clash of Puerto Ricans as Oscar “El Pupilo” Collazo (5-0, 3 KOs) of Villalba faces Wilfredo “Bimbito” Mendez (18-2, 6 KOs) of Caguas. Having only turned professional in February 2020, if Collazo secures the victory he will be on the doorstep of a world title opportunity and with the potential to make history as one of the fastest to become a world champion in his division.

Opening up the DAZN broadcast, Indio’s Bektemir “Bully” Melikuziev (10-1, 8 KOs) will return in full force after an impressive technical knockout win on August 6, 2022 on the undercard of the Ortiz vs. McKinson. His opponent for the scheduled 10-round super middleweight fight will be announced soon.

Alexis Rocha: "We've Tried To Get Former Champs To Fight Us; Things Just Fall Through"

“It’s really a matter of who they can get in front of me,” Rocha told Boxing Scene. “The past few fights we’ve tried to get former world champions to fight us. Things just fall through, whether it’s the business side of it or whatever.

“So… it wasn’t even about choosing anyone. It’s just fighting the guys who say yes.”

“I’m here to prove myself against the best,” insisted Rocha. “All we can do is fight the guys who agree to face us. Let’s see how it goes [Saturday night] and then we’ll go from there. God willing, things go our way, we’ll continue to seek out the best fighters in the division willing to get in the ring with us.”

I remember Ashie challenging Kevin Mitchell for the Commonwealth Super Featherweight title about 17 years ago on Sky Sports, incredible he's topping the bill on a Golden Boy show on DAZN 🚮

This is what the participants had to say:

ALEXIS ROCHA, CURRENT NABO WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPION:

“Mentally as a fighter – RIP to Kobe Bryant who passed away three years ago – you have to have that ‘Mamba Mentality.’ You have to be ready for anybody they put in front of you. If it’s you or George Ashie I have to prepare for it. I have to focus on what I can do.”

“Sometimes losses hurt fighters but they can also motivate. They help you mentally. What can I say? Ghanians are tough but I’m Mexican, I’m just as tough. Everyone is always asking what I want after this fight but I can’t take my eyes off of him. He has nothing to lose and everything to gain. Those are very dangerous fighters. My mind doesn’t go past the 28th. My mind is focused on him. Whoever they put in front of me I have to put on a spectacular show. Keep knocking on that door and the big names will follow.”

GEORGE ASHIE, IBF CONTINENTAL AFRICA SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT TITLEHOLDER:

“First of all I want to thank God for this opportunity. I’ve been training everyday for this opportunity. I’m a great fighter from Ghana and I’m going to show that I’m back. I want to prove that to the fans.”

“I want to thank Golden Boy Promotions and Star Boxing for this great opportunity. This is going to be Oscar De La Hoya vs. Ike Quartey II and this time it’s going to Ghana not Mexico. It’s going to be a war. I want to thank all the fans in Ghana. I have this opportunity and I’m not going to let it slide out of my hands. These opportunities are life changing and I’m here to stay.”

FLOYD SCHOFIELD, LIGHTWEIGHT PROSPECT:

“I put in the work to put on a show so tune in. This is for me to prove that I’m here to stay. This is my division and I’m going to take over. All I can say is that I’m grateful for the opportunity,”

“It’s going to be a great fight. I want to fight all of them. Anybody who has the belts like Haney, Davis and Ryan. I want all the top names. They’re in my way. They’re just stepping stones. When I see them it’s going to be all business. I’m not going to give away the plan but it’s going to be a good fight.”

ALBERTO MERCADO, LIGHTWEIGHT FIGHTER:

“I’m very happy to be here after not fighting for so many years. I want to thank God. I can’t tell you what’s going to happen this Saturday but I’m going to go off of what he [Floyd] does.”

“I have the experience. I’ve seen this kid. I know he’s talented, he’s young and he’s bringing it all on the table. I got offered this fight back in September and I said yes. I know I have the experience and you’ll see this Saturday.”

BEK MELIKUZIEV, SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHT PROSPECT:

“Hello everyone and thank you for coming. For me the priority is this fight, I’m only concentrating on this Saturday and the guy in front of me. If everything goes well I want a rematch with Gabe Rosado.”

“My home is Uzbekistan, but here in the U.S. my home is Indio, CA. It’s amazing there. There are many Mexicans there who like boxing and are very hardworking like us Uzbekistans. I’m looking forward to fighting in Indio, CA. Thank you to everyone, we are ready. Gracias, Mexican Fans. Vamos!”

ULISES SIERRA, SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHT PROSPECT:

“I don’t really get too many opportunities on the big stage, so when they offered this I had to hop on. It’s going to be an exciting fight.”

“Bek is very aggressive and I’m expecting him to bring everything. I’ll be there standing tall ready to catch him between shots. Thank you guys for the support. Tune in, it’s going to be a good fight.”

OSCAR COLLAZO, MINIMUMWEIGHT CONTENDER:

“I dedicate this fight to all my fans, to all my Puerto Rican fans. I want them to feel proud of me and I want them to know that I have been working very hard to become a world champion. I am going to be a teacher come Saturday.”

YUDEL REYES, MINIMUMWEIGHT CONTENDER:

“I feel very good. Golden Boy offered me this fight. I feel super calm and very prepared for this fight and the preparation we had for this fight. Mexico vs. Puerto Rico have always been great fights.”

OSCAR DE LA HOYA, CHAIRMAN AND CEO OF GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS:

“We have started 2023 on an amazing note, with an amazing partner like DAZN, bringing fight fans, especially LA fight fans and throughout California great cards like this one on January 28. We want to present fight fans with the hottest new talent.”

“YouTube Theater is an amazing venue, there is not a bad seat in the house and can seat 5-6,000 people. This card is stacked, we have some tough fights, and we’re committed to the mission to bring fight fans the best entertainment.”

BERNARD HOPKINS, GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS PARTNER AND INTERNATIONAL BOXING HALL OF FAMER:

“To Alexis and Bek who have a loss on their record: it’s not how you start, it’s how you end it. I started my professional career with a loss. And now I am a Hall of Famer.”

“We put the call out. When the great fights happen, Golden Boy isn’t going to stick their chest out and say ‘see what we did,’ it’s going to be more like ‘see what we said’ – we said that we want to make the best fights happen.”

bek easy to hit but has some wicked body shots, seems they want a rematch with rosado, he was beating rosado up before walking onto that ktfo and rosado taken some punishment since, prob he'd be favoured to get revenge

schofield a bit wild (did a full 360 after missing a hook) and clipped with some left hands, but fast and can explode with some impressive combos, mixes the shots to the head and body. looks to have good raw talent but needs polishing. winning widely but a bit of a test here

Stunning KO for Rocha, right hook had Ashie out cold in the 7th, he dropped him with the same shot right at the end of the 3rd, Ashie spent most of the fight on the ropes or in the corner, Rocha brought educated pressure, working the head and body mixing up the power, he looked alright Rocha but Ashie played into his hands by staying still, the KO though was exceptional

Makes a lot of sense, I think Rocha will be called as his mandatory as Ortiz and Thurman are busy. I'd imagine the deal will be two-fight; Rocha in May to take care of the mandatory, then Vergil at the end of the year.
