Lennox Lewis vs James Toney in 2003

Post by DrDuke »

Late 2003, what if ageing Lenny after Klit and before the retirement decided to take one final fight against James "Two Ton" Toney, who was happy and supplied after the Jirov bout, ready to conquer the heavies?

12 rounds, the unified HW championship.

Either Lewis outboxed Toney behind his long range left jabs and right hands to take a decision or stop him in the late rounds as Toney was still elusive to be knock out early by one of the great heavyweight champions in Lennox Lewis. Imo, I'm taking Lewis by decision.

Toney did have a rock hard chin here. Lennox may well be too big and too strong for him, but I think Toney would probably be crafty enough to stay on his feet and lose every round.

Sounds about right. Toney wouldn't take risks, because he would be overwhelmed in a case of such an attempt. Lewis wouldn't force it, since there woudn't be a need in it.

JT being given far too much credit here. LL would level him the first half of the fight and he'd stay levelled.

An old heavyweight Lewis would beat up and stop an old fat middleweight like Toney within 6-7 rounds. And then the promoter would be arrested for making the match

Lewis would pummel him on the way to a stoppage.

Lewis wins easy and big. Toney, a natural middleweight, had an amazingly successful run at heavyweight. But fighting Lewis would have been pushing the envelope.

No way Toney holds his own with Lewis. This is where the buck stops.

Two great fighters on my top 100 all time pound per pound list. But, I think that Lennox Lewis would be too much for James "Lights Out" Toney.

Lewis by unanimous decision or TKO in 10. Too much weight against Toney.
