Jamie Munguia vs. Daniel Jacobs | DAZN - Who wins?

Jamie Munguia vs. Daniel Jacobs in the works for DAZN headliner in summer

Jaime Munguia and Daniel Jacobs are in negotiations for a headliner fight this summer on DAZN. According to Dan Rafael, if the fight gets made, it’ll take place at a catchweight in the super middleweight division.

The former IBF/WBA middleweight champion Jacobs (37-4, 30 KOs) is pretty well past it at this point in his career, and pretty much the only thing he’d do for Munguia gives him a well-known name to add to his resume.

Jacobs looked tired & old in his last fight against British fighter John Ryder last February, losing a 12 round split decision.

Jacobs fought reasonably well for the first five rounds but then spent the entire second half of the contest, clinching and stalling out the fight in a defensive posture. Hopefully, Jacobs doesn’t fight like that against Munguia because that’ll be hard to watch.

Although Munguia has had opportunities to fight for world titles at 160, it’s believed that he’s waiting to get a title shot against IBF middleweight champion Gennadiy Golovkin in 2023.

Until then, the Golden Boy promoted Munguia is expected to keep playing it safe fighting weaker opposition. It’s too bad Golovkin doesn’t give Munguia a title shot now so that we can get this waiting game over with.

Perhaps after Munguia fights Golovkin, he’ll begin fighting good opposition.

Many boxing fans think Golden Boy Promotions are purposefully cherry-picking weak opposition for Munguia to keep him unbeaten until he hits it big with a fight against Golovkin or Canelo Alvarez.

------------------
“Representatives for Jamie Munguia and Daniel Jacobs have begun discussing a fight between them that would headline a DAZN card this summer,” said Dan Rafael on his Fight Freaks site.

“The sources said that Munguia co-promoter Golden Boy and Jacobs’ team of promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing and manager Keith Connolly are in talks for a fight that likely would take place slightly north of the 160-pound middleweight limit. Jacobs’ last three battles have been at super middleweight.”

ryder is pursuing a title shot at super middleweight (he's wba mandatory or #1 or something) plus loads of ppl had jacobs beating him anyway. probably more then had callum beating him. obviously ryder's not going to move down to some low catchweight to fight munguia in a non title fight now

Jacobs is a bit on the downswing, but would definitely be the best opponent of Munguia's career. If Munguia won this, he would be somewhere in the vicinity of the Alvarez sweepstakes, although still not quite the correct weight division.

Why would you make this fight for mung? he has turned down multiple title fights, and he is going to take Jacobs, coming off a loss, that he actualy won... I think he loses this, jacobs is too slick for him. Big name, but id rather go after a belt than a very very risky name coming off a "loss".

Munguia-Jacobs: Negotiations Ongoing For Fight At Catchweight On DAZN

Jaime Munguia won’t fight Jermall Charlo on June 18, but he might get a chance to face a former middleweight champion during that month.

Boxing Scene has confirmed that negotiations are ongoing for Mexico’s Munguia to box ex-IBF 160-pound champion Daniel Jacobs. Their fight could take place as soon as June 11, but also at a later date.

Boxing Scene also has learned that Munguia (39-0, 31 KOs) and Jacobs (37-4, 30 KOs) will box at a catchweight higher than 164 pounds, despite rumors that they’ve settled on 164 pounds as their contract weight. Both boxers want the fight, though, and Golden Boy Promotions (Munguia), Keith Connolly, Jacobs’ manager, and Eddie Hearn, Jacobs’ promoter, are in the early stages of trying to come to an agreement for a fight DAZN would stream.

Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix, who is also part of DAZN’s broadcast team, first reported during the newest episode of his podcast that talks between handlers for Munguia and Jacobs had begun.

Earlier this month, the 25-year-old Munguia seemingly could’ve chosen between title fights against Charlo, the WBC middleweight champion, and Janibek Alimkhanuly for the vacant WBO middleweight title.

Once negotiations between Golden Boy and promoter Tom Brown, who represents Charlo, broke down over whether Showtime and/or DAZN would televise or stream Charlo-Munguia and if it’d be a pay-per-view fight, Houston’s Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) chose to make an optional defense of his title against Poland’s Maciej Sulecki (30-2, 11 KOs) on June 18 in Houston. Kazakhstan’s Alimkhanuly (11-0, 7 KOs) is expected to encounter England’s Danny Dignum (14-0-1, 8 KOs) for that unclaimed WBO belt May 21.

With Charlo and Alimkhanuly headed in different directions, Munguia’s co-promoters, Golden Boy and Zanfer Boxing, were left to find another opponent.

Brooklyn’s Jacobs lost a debatable 12-round split decision to British southpaw John Ryder (31-5, 17 KOs) on February 12 at Alexandra Palace in London, Ryder’s hometown. In his previous appearance, Jacobs won a controversial split decision over Philadelphia’s Gabe Rosado (26-14-1, 15 KOs) in November 2020 at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.
Tijuana’s Munguia defeated Rosado rather convincingly in their 12-rounder, which took place November 13 at Honda Center in Anaheim, California. In his subsequent bout, Munguia overwhelmed D’Mitrius Ballard (21-1-1, 13 KOs) on his way to a third-round stoppage February 19 at Plaza Monumental in Tijuana.

Daniel Jacobs looked frail and was hurt several times during his most recent outing in the UK when he suffered a highly-controversial defeat to John Ryder.

The 35½ year old American will almost certainly be considered well past-his-prime and also weight-drained when he faces Munguia, because more than three years would have transpired since Daniel Jacobs competed at 160lbs.

It’s tough to expect a veteran fighter that’s considered a big 168lb-er to compete at a catchweight that’ll be close to the middleweight limit.

But let's not forget that Jaime Munguia refrained from exploiting his ranking to compel the WBO into granting him an opportunity to challenge for Demetrius Andrade’s WBO world title.

Munguia also refused to participate in a bout for the WBO’s interim world title at 160lbs against Zhanibek Alimkhanuly.

And the Mexican also rejected an offer from the PBC to face Jermall Charlo for the American’s WBC world middleweight title.

So it’s abundantly clear that Golden Boy don’t have much faith in Munguia’s ability, hence their risk averse approach to matchmaking.

Therefore, I have to agree with Oscar De La Hoya’s opinion about Daniel Jacobs, resulting in Jaime Munguia beating the shot American either by a clear decision or by late KO.

The fight might be moderately competitive for the first few rounds, but it won’t take too long for Munguia to gain the winning momentum, due to Jacobs gradually fading as the fight progresses.

And the only question mark over this fight is whether Jacobs has enough left in the tank to last the distance.

Personally-speaking, I think there's a strong possibility that the American will suffer the second stoppage defeat of his career, which may end up being his final outing.

This is being looked at again.

Would be a 166 catchweight.

Knowing DJ has trouble making weight I guess. DJ being semi shot isn't enough? DLH/Munguia are sad characters.

Good fight this. Jacobs is technically better but mung is fresher and scarier.
