Terry o connor
When he was a boxer was he any good ?
Re: Terry o connor
Watched him on a few on Ron Gray shows in the Midlands and he plugged away behind the jab but there was no power in his right hands. It was all jab, jab, jab, all fairly monotonous, but he knew how to hang in there and I would say that durability was Terry's greatest asset. Most of his fights went all the way and he went in with some decent heavies, including muscled American Bruce Grandham in Liverpool in 1977, a faded Danny McAlinden, big Stan McDermott and Gordon Ferris, all of whom beat him. He picked up the Midlands heavyweight belt with a rare stoppage win over Rocky Burton in 1980, losing it to Ricky James a year later. He went on a few winning runs in his career and I would say that a draw with Alfredo Evangelista in Spain in 1981 is one of his best results. A draw meant he was robbed. I remember he had a place in South Africa and boxed there a few times.

He fought Kallie Knoetze too. Along with Gerrie Coetzee, they were the three big names of South African heavyweight boxing in the late seventies.nobleart1978 wrote: ↑12 Jan 2021, 07:04 a place in south africa ?

Certainly wasn't/isn't a good ref/judge. Remember Kovalev smashing the living daylights out of Cleverly in one round and O'Connor practically dragged Cleverly back to his corner at the end of the round just for him to come out and get stopped in the next round.

It looks to me as if O'Connor is about to stop the fight and then the bell goes, so he changes his mind. If he'd have let go of Cleverly, he'd definitely have fallen to the canvas. He definitely should have stopped it point.
It's the exact opposite of IJL stopping Enzo and not changing his mind.

He had a residence out there. I seem to remember that BN reported he was going to live out there permanently but he obviously changed his mind, although he fought there a few times and always fought better overseas than he did here. Anywhere is better than Birmingham in the 1970s. Just to sum up his style: good jab, nothing right hands, the ability to spoil and a fair amount of persistence.

You can't go abroad and get through and get some wins if he was no good!bennie wrote: ↑12 Jan 2021, 23:10nobleart1978 wrote: ↑12 Jan 2021, 07:04 a place in south africa ?

Area champion is about right.

How O'Connor had Fury V McDermott 98-92 for Fury is a complete fkin mystery to me. He either:
A: Had s**t in his eyes that night
B: Was under a gypsy curse
C: Held a grudge about getting stopped at the Royal Albert Hall by John's old man.

His last fight was against a guy called Allou Gobe. That has to be a wind up. Someone named after potato and cauliflower curry.
I wonder if Chris P Bacon fought Allou Gobe for the title of favourite food to eat when you get home pissed.
