Canelo ... Is the P4P No 1 crown teetering on his head ?

Post by Evander »

Will Canelo be toppled from the P4P number 1 spot this year ?
The Bivol defeat seemed to indicate he doesn't have the physical attributes to move up and fight a live one at the weight.
Same time, he beat an aged GGG on the way back to show he still has it in him.
Where do you see Canelo going from here ?

He hasn’t been #1 since the Bivol loss.

It’s a toss up.

Many have Usyk or Inoue at #1.

He definitely lost his claim for the p4p #1 title after the Bivol loss. Now the most appropriate canidates are Inoue, Crawford and Usyk.

Inoue #1 based on his win over Narvaez in 2014? Or his two wins over Donaire, who hasn't been in his prime since like 2014?
No way in the world. I've seen Inoue getting overrated for a long time, but this really, badly takes the cake. Alvarez is still insanely ahead of Inoue. He's got like 35 wins that are better than Inoue's best win.

Bivol and Usyk are probably top 2 right now.

It’s not about HOW many fights though.

It’s about the opponents.

Loma didn’t waste time either.

After about 9 fights Usyk went for world level opponents and bar about 1 or 2, he’s not lost to any of them.

I agree the opponents are very important.
But I can't say the Cruiserweight division was on fire with talent when Usyk was there and since then he's only beat Joshua in terms of a big name and Andy Ruiz knocked him out before that.
Not saying Usyk isn't a good boxer because he is, but P4P Number 1 I don't think so.

Nobody ever stays P4P #1 off of a decisive loss. I didn't have him P4P #1 before Bivol. Right now he can't be any higher than 5.

Usyk I'd say is the #1 P4P fighter at the moment. I can see a case for Inoue as well. Those are the only 2 guys in the conversation.

It's debatable who's 3-10 really.

Other than Inoue who else could it be? Nobody else has a comparable resume to Usyk except Canelo, and Canelo as we've established lost last year.

I'd say Usyk's Cruiserweight division was about as good as the division ever was in it's history, and his winning the World Class Super Series was probably the most prestigious accomplishment anyone ever has at the weight.

The only other comparable name to his achievements at the weight are your Forum namesake obviously.

So considering he's got All time credentials at Cruiserweight and 3 of the 4 belts at Heavyweight. I mean...I'd say he's doing pretty great.

If he beats Tyson Fury he's absolutely #1 with a f*cking bullet then. But now it's a toss up between he and Inoue.

Last time the Cruiserweight division had any serious talent was like you say back in the late 80's when Holyfield was kicking about.
Historically it's been one of those hubs that comprise of three types of fighters.
1.Boxers who are making their way to Heavyweight.
2.Light Heavyweights making their way to Cruiserweight.
3.Cruiserweights who are too small to make Heavyweight.
Not saying the batch of Cruiserweights in the division while Usyk was there aren't decent boxers, I'd rather describe it has competitive.
Competitive isn't good enough to make P4P Number 1 in my book, takes a bit more than that and wins against Joshua especially after Ruiz iced him previously isn't entirely convincing.
Is he among a group vying for that, sure, but he's not there quite yet for my money.

He beat 3 different world champions. Who at the time were top 3.. and became undisputed against the best of the division.

If you remember rightly they had those inter Cruiserweight competitions to highlight and give a boost to a historically tired division.
It's kind of like the no mans land of boxing, the weight class is stuck between the marquee Heavyweight division and the more upcoming over the last decade or so Light Heavyweight division.
It needed the boost, doesn't mean everyone in it would be a solid argument to back up someone being hailed as potentially the best boxer in the world.

Unlike the SMW tournament; the CW attracted the best CW’s.

But in the SMW division depending on what's at stake you'll draw interest from 160 and 175.
Cruiserweight, you're drawing attention from just Cruiserweights maybe LH, Heavyweights aren't coming down.
It's just one of those divisions.
I don't know, I just feel the P4P Number 1 spot shouldn't be sold off at a fire sale price and given to someone who is the flavor of the month, you got to earn this and it doesn't come cheap which is why so few boxers have owned it outright.

Most of them probably feel like they have to make someone P4P number 1.
What it really means is a "Temporary P4P Number 1".
Shane Mosley was a "Temporary P4P Number 1".
Sergey Kovalev was a "Temporary P4P Number 1".
Bernard Hopkins was a "Temporary P4P Number 1".
There has been lots of them.
If you don't feel Canelo is worthy and Usyk isn't quite there it could fall into the P4P Number 1 crown is vacant or teetering on Canelo's head.

Naoya "Monster" Inoue is the current #1 P4P. How long will it last? We will have to wait and see.

It's not though. Usyk is wearing it. Bivol knocked the crown off of Canelo's head. Nobody coming off a loss ever remained P4P #1.

P4P, for whatever it's worth, must mean P4P now and not 1, 2, 3 or more years ago.

That leaves Inoue or Usyk currently at no 1 for me.

I'd give Inoue the nod if I had to as hes been the more active fighter.

A P4P no 1 must remain active.

For others it could also mean Beterbiev, Bivol, Benavidez or any other fighter with a name beginning with the letter b who's also prepared to fight anyone put before them.

Or how about Joyce, Spence, or even Joshua again (once he convincingly thumps Franklin)?

Others no doubt will still want Crawford, Fury, Hrgovic, Canelo himself or any of the other carefully matched contenders out there.

Anyway, I hope that we can all agree that you don't have be undefeated to be P4P no 1 but given the fickle nature of fight fans it must help.

canelo lost both of his first 2 fights to ggg. clearly at that. back 2 back. golovkin got fvcked over.

canelo's record states otherwise, so while plain and obvious corruption enabled canelo to claim p4p king, it was golovkin who objectively was the real numero uno.

considering this, then when was canelo the 'real p4p number one'? was he already before the first golovkin robbery?
