The Real Eddie Ross?
The Real Eddie Ross?
Can't recall if I've asked this before. August 23rd 1948 young Rocky Marciano knocks out unbeaten Canadian light heavyweight Eddie Ross in Providence, Rhode Island. According to Boxrec, the very next day, the same Eddie Ross knocks out Bill Sparks at Quebec City. I can't find any newspaper account to support either fight. Does anyone here have anything?
Re: The Real Eddie Ross?
The date of the Ross vs. Sparks fight is likely off. The source appears to be a recordbook, which often cannot be relied on when it comes to dates.

Some feat, by car its over 7 hours to travel between those two destinations
Re: The Real Eddie Ross?
I'm wondering if Marciano's opponent was really Massachusetts light heavyweight Eddie Rossi. Makes more sense.

Weird one. Eddie Ross also fought a few days earlier in Quebec so seems odd to travel all that distance and back for one fight. But he did have other fights in Massachusetts so maybe it was him. I guess the issue with it being Rossi instead was his last recorded bout was 2 years before that fight. As someone else said maybe the dates are just wrong.
Re: The Real Eddie Ross?
After searching through numerous Quebec newspapers I'm finding very little information to support Eddie Ross' record in that period.. Even Quebec City newspapers fail to even mention him excepting rare occasions. For instance I've found one small blurb regarding an upcoming fight with Billy Sparks in August of 1948, but no follow-up. I've checked specific dates of his fights and in some cases there were no fight cards reported at all. Even searching month by month turned up very little regarding Ross. He begins to look like a press agent's fantasy.

His record on boxrec does contain some foot notes for fights so presumably some fights are written about somewhere. But yes maybe an overinflated record, I note his wiki page claims a press article said he was 25-0-1 (23KOS) before he fought Marciano. You would think more would be known about him if that was the case.Cap wrote: ↑06 Feb 2023, 09:17 After searching through numerous Quebec newspapers I'm finding very little information to support Eddie Ross' record in that period.. I checked the Providence Journal and all they ever reference for the fight is young Rocky Marchegiano fighting Eddie Ross of Montreal (on four separate occasions / days I believe).
