Oleksandr Gvozdyk looking to return this Saturday

Post by Las Vegas boxing guy »

I see that Oleksandr Gvozdyk (17-1, 14 KO's) is slated to fight this Saturday in Pomona, California vs TBA. Gvozdyk, the former WBC light heavyweight champion last fought in October 2019 in a brutal affair vs Artur Beterbiev. The Ukranian is now living and training in Oxnard. This is an interesting comeback.

Two things - this Saturday and TBA do not inspire any confidence that his fight is going to be any more than a can crush. :maybe:
I could be wrong.

No, you'd be correct. After a near 3 1/2 year layoff I would not expect an immediate serious challenge. I'm just glad to see him back in action. Many people at the time gave Gvozdyk a good chance at defeating Beterbiev. The fight was very high paced and violent.

It looks like Gvozdyk was settling some business in his homecountry after the retirement, but the obvious things made him to return to the previous job. Today it's pretty common for boxers to cashout in prime years and then to retire from the sport while still in shape. Gvodzyk most likely had something left, it'll be interesting to see him back in action.

Younger than Beterbiev, but ironically closer to the end of his prime due to accumulation of years of ring rust. I find it really annoying when boxers waste their prime years, and then come back to fight past their prime for way less money and significance. That is assuming that his minor concussion wasn't keeping him out of the sport all this time.

You couldn't be wrong, IMO.

Good to see him back and nobody expects him to face a contender first up but sheesh.

Haha c'mon, Gvozdyk's first fight opponent (Jorge Miranda) isn't that bad, well at least on paper. He has 58 career victories, is coming off a win and he has went the distance with some descent boxers ..... ex; Yamaguchi Falcao, Tommy Browne and Esquiva Falcao who is currently (30-0, 20 KO's).

With that all said, I'm taking this contest to end within 3 rounds.

Also some said he had suffered mentally from almost killing Adonis Stevenson, and so may not have had the killer instinct to match Beterbiev's.
