They have to be though. Home fighter in Britain will be allowed to be half killed before the ref steps in, corners can’t trust them to do the right thing.

It’s a very tough call to make in a split second - can’t really blame them for getting it wrong.

Wrong call by Davison. Wood was hurt but he recovers well and there wasn't much time left in the round. Too much on the line for that stoppage. One more kd and it's fine.

Wood's record would've influenced me towards letting it run. Had he been undefeated I'd have stopped him because of the rematch clause.
His problem now is that it's guaranteed demotion if he doesn't win the rematch, heaping on a ton of extra pressure. Should he win that, great — perfect call. Otherwise he'll have had a shot at saving his goals denied him. His odds were poor, but I'd have given him a chance of making it back to his corner.
But let's see how he copes with the mental side of the runback, because that's an easy mistake to learn from if his confidence isn't too rattled. Maybe Davison's better placed to gamble on his comeback potential.

Really enjoyed the main event, and also the Gamal Yafai fight- even though he is shot, it was still a gutsy slog, and credit to Ruiz- that was a great performance.
As for Dalton Smith, what do you say? He wasn't winning fans tonight.

Lara should have been sent back to a neutral corner.

Great fight, feel bad for Leigh, what a gutsy warrior he is. He had the mad Mexican in his sights there for awhile, keeping him in check with some world class hitting. Both showed tremendous chins: how Woods got up from that hellacious bomb I don’t know.
Ben had to make a spit second call, and as it’s been rightly said above, our refs will let home town boy get decapitated rather than step in.
Initially I was pissed at Ben waving it off w 10
secs to go, but when you see how Leigh dropped I think he made the right and compassionate call ( and might lose his job as a result ) Even if he’d made it to the bell, he was concussed and it was curtains the next round.
Like I said, that was as nightmare 1st defence to get handed, I hope he gets the right fights now and the money that follows. He certainly deserves it.
And clearly pizza and coke after weighing in is the way to go

Highlights for anyone who hasn't seen it. Very tricky decision for Davidson IMO, can't honestly say what the right thing to do was.
Re: Round-by-Round: Leigh Wood vs. Mauricio Lara | DAZN - 18 February 2023
I hate this 'up on the scorecards'. It's barely ever relevant other than to show dodgy judging (i.e. Froch/Groves 1).
In this case, the fight was stopped around 10 seconds before the end of the round, which had it continued Lara would have won at least 10-8 and which would have made the fight at least level on 2 scorecards, with 5 rounds to go.
By the way, the scoring was good. Lara won 1-2 and Wood won 3-6.

Wood was clearly in a position to continue after the count. Davison got it badly wrong.

Think it was a good call from Ben. Wood about to get absolutely ironed out.
Lara is mental, love watching him. Warrington will probably get another immediate and undeserved title shot and I hope Lara flattens him again. Noticed he went straight over to Warrington after the towel went in.

Watching it again, I’ll side with Ben.

Currently lying in bed with last night's Indian watching a 67 year old roided up looking Felix Sturm getting outboxed by a similarly ancient Turk by the name of Sukru Altay

Warrington has the IBF belt. So would be unification.ashall2 wrote: ↑19 Feb 2023, 05:26 Think it was a good call from Ben. Wood about to get absolutely ironed out.

Half of us think Ben should have let him continue, the other half are saying he did the right thing.
Had he continued and got flattened, Ben would have them got the same hate from the people thinking he should’ve continued..
Trainers never really win in this situation.
I’m not fan of Ben.

the towel was the right call .
lara was right behind the ref waiting to KO woods who was still not recovered and should have been put across in the neutral corner but wasnt .
Davidson saved woods from a massive undefended head punch and any damage resulting , also ensured his fighter goes on to the rematch and or a warrington fight so he continues to earn as much as he can this year and beyond .

I didn't watch as I was listening on radio but saw the stoppage later. I think it was the right call, I know people saying only 10 seconds of whatever left but Wood was on shaky legs and Lara would've been all over him, it would only have took a split second to knock him spark out.

Things that don't matter when a fighters legs and/or eyes are gone
How longs left in the round
If its a championship fight or a 4 rounder
Who's the champion or challenger
Who's the favorite or underdog
Who's the home fighter or away
Who's durable or chinny
Ben Davison had a split second to make a decision although I thought it was borderline when it happened, Wood's legs in the corner after told me it was the right call, Wood might have made it out the round but it took Eubank less than 5 seconds to brain damage Watson
Wood has the rematch to put things right
