Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC) has announced the signing of former junior middleweight champion Austin ‘No Doubt’ Trout’ to a multi-fight promotional contract.

Fighting out of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Trout compiled a professional boxing record of 35-5-1 with 18 knockouts. The 37-year-old southpaw is best known for his WBA junior middleweight championship victory over Puerto Rican Legend Miguel Cotto on December 1, 2012 at Madison Square Garden.

Austin Trout vs Diego Sanchez official for BKFC Knucklemania 3 fight card in Albuquerque on Feb 17

BKFC KnuckleMania 3: Hunt vs Richman

Former boxing world champion Austin Trout makes his bare knuckle fighting debut against fellow BKFC debutant and former UFC fighter Diego Sanchez. The bout has been officially added to the Knucklemania 3 fight card taking place at Tingley Coliseum in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Friday, February 17. The pair squares off at welterweight.

In the previously announced main event two-division BKFC champion Lorenzo Hunt (8-1-0, 7 KOs) of St. Augustine, Florida puts his light heavyweight title on the line against the division’s interim champion Mike Richman (4-0-0, 4 KOs) of Rosemount, Minnesota. The pair squares off in the championship unification.

“We’re planning the biggest night of combat sports in the history of New Mexico and are beyond thrilled to announce this cross-state battle between the two biggest stars from this extraordinary fighting state,” said David Feldman, President of BKFC. “Austin and Diego are two of the most successful fighters in the history of New Mexico and their fight at Knucklemania 3 is the perfect complement to the BKFC light heavyweight world title clash between Lorenzo Hunt and Mike Richman.”

Austin Trout vs Diego Sanchez

Over the course of his pro boxing career Austin Trout has compiled a record of 35-5-1 with 18 KOs. A native of Las Cruces, New Mexico is best known for his WBA light middleweight championship victory over Puerto Rican legend Miguel Cotto in December 2012 in New York, which marked his fourth successful title defense. In his following outing next April in San Antonio, Texas, Trout suffered the defeat by unanimous decision against Canelo Alvarez and lost the belt. His resume also includes the battles against Erislandy Lara, Jermall Charlo, among others.

Diego Sanchez of Albuquerque, New Mexico is a winner of The Ultimate Fighter 1 middleweight tournament back in April 2005. He also challenged for UFC lightweight title in December 2009, but suffered the defeat via fifth-round TKO against B.J. Penn. His MMA record is 30-14 with 10 KOs.

Also joining Knucklemania 3 fight card, John Dodson (1-0, 1 KO) of Albuquerque, NM goes up against Jarod Grant (5-1, 4 KOs) of Pembroke Pines, FL. The pair battles it out at flyweight.

“Also, just finalized this morning is a sensational flyweight fight between John Dodson and Jarod Grant,” Feldman said. “Dodson was amazing in his first BKFC fight last August in Albuquerque and Grant is a former BKFC World Champion who can’t wait to fight for another world title.”

“Tickets are moving very well since they went on-sale last week and we’re going to have many more huge fight announcements in the coming days.”

I wonder why it keeps being Boxers with relatively low punching power that try this?

I reckon its because the hard punching guys generally make more money, so there's no reason for them to leave gloved boxing. Although I must say I'm shocked Trout signed up for this because he's still a name guy in gloved boxing.

I don't know about that. He got beat by Canelo like what? 10 years ago? Has he had a big fight since?

Rip Diego Sanchez. Dude already has some brain damage. Death by 1000 needles with Trout's inability to crush a grape.

No one will pay him the money he probably wants to fight some up-and-comer or unknown Russian. Trout is a name, but he's no draw.

Austin Trout, Diego Sanchez are happy to take the gloves off for bare knuckles boxing event

Austin Trout enters his Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship debut brimming with confidence.

It’s a confidence that stems from a 42-fight professional boxing career that saw him capture the WBA light middleweight title and square off against the likes of Canelo Alvarez, Jermell Charlo, Jermall Charlo, Miguel Cotto and Erislandy Lara. It also comes from believing that the BKFC roster is populated with former mixed martial arts fighters whose boxing abilities won’t be able to match his own. The Las Cruces native believes that includes Diego Sanchez, his opponent in the BKFC: Knucklemania 3 co-main event at Tingley Coliseum on Feb. 17.

“I’m gonna beat him up until he can’t get beat up no more,” Trout said at a press conference on Thursday. “I do not believe Diego has the hands to deal with me. In fact, I don’t believe any of the MMA fighters in the BKFC – past, present or future – are gonna have the hands to deal with me. I plan on proving that.”

As a winner on the first season of “The Ultimate Fighter,” Sanchez was instrumental in putting both the UFC and Albuquerque MMA on the map. However, the former Del Norte High state champion wrestler made his name in the Octagon thanks to his relentless grappling, conditioning and toughness – not his boxing. Sanchez, who will also be making his BKFC debut, nonetheless believes the bare knuckle realm offers plenty of opportunities to showcase his skills.

“I never really liked the gloves in the UFC anyway,” Sanchez said. “I felt like without the gloves on, I was a better puncher. The punches would get in better, they were harder to block. I felt that was a more pure way to fight.

“I was already interested. It’s the rule setting and it’s the dynamics of being able to actively strike in the clinch. I’m built for that … .”

Though Trout would seem to be a considerable favorite in his welterweight (165-pound) clash with Sanchez, he acknowledges that BKFC is a different animal. That’s why other boxers such as Paulie Malignaggi and DeMarcus Corley have tried and failed at the sport.

“There’s definitely been adjustments that needed to be made. I’ve made those adjustments. I’m not gonna go into detail about them, but it’s not the same game as just boxing,” Trout said. “I’m damn good at what I do.”

Sanchez will be making his first combat sports appearance since March of last year, when he lost to fellow UFC veteran Kevin Lee in an MMA bout under the Eagle Fighting Championship banner.

“As far as how many times I’m gonna do (BKFC), I don’t know,” Sanchez said. “I love this sport, and two-minute rounds? Compared to five (rounds), that’s a sprint for me. That’s a sprint up the hill. This is a gonna be a Burque dark alley street fight. This ain’t boxing. This is gangsta s – t.”

SELLING THE DRAMA: Things got testy between headliners Lorenzo Hunt and Mike Richman during Thursday’s presser. The combatants traded barbs before scuffling, which resulted in both fighters briefly tumbling off the back of the dais and knocking over the backdrop in the process. Eventually Richman and Hunt were separated.

“It’s not something that we want,” BKFC president Dave Feldman said. “We don’t want to have these kind of antics up here. At the end of the day, you have two guys that are ‘A’ personalities that think they’re the baddest man on the planet that go face to face and don’t really like each other. Sometimes this type of thing is gonna happen. Unfortunately it happened here.”

DREAMING BIG: Former UFC flyweight title challenger and Albuquerque resident John Dodson will be making his second BKFC appearance after earning a 40-second knockout victory in August. “The Magician” since has scored a first-round TKO of Hideo Tokoro in Japan in an MMA bout on New Year’s Eve for Japanese organization Rizin Fighting Federation. Dodson has big aspirations heading into 2023.

“I love the fact that Rizin is going to let me be a champion and the same thing with BKFC,” Dodson said. “I will hold both of those titles very soon.”

Feldman said the winner of the matchup between Dodson and Jarod Grant could be in line to challenge for the inaugural BKFC flyweight title down the road.

MYSTERY REVEALED: BKFC advertised the appearance of a mystery fighter prior to Thursday’s event. That turned out to be former Dallas Cowboy and UFC veteran Greg Hardy, who was signed by the promotion several months ago. Hardy will face Josh Watson at Knucklemania 3.

Press Release | Austin Trout Batters Diego Sanchez in Bare Knuckle Fight, Greg Hardy Blasted Out

Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC) returned to Albuquerque, NM with KnuckleMania3 at the Tingley Coliseum.

Fighting in the welterweight division in a cross-state rivalry fight, former junior middleweight world champion Austin ‘No Doubt’ Trout of Las Cruces, NM made bare knuckle debut in stopping UFC veteran Diego Sanchez of Albuquerque, NM in the fourth round.

The more elusive Trout was able to stick with his game plan, fighting on the outside throughout the fight and hitting without getting hit.

Although the more aggressive Sanchez had his moments of success in each round he was unable to mount a consistent attack.

Trout dropped a bloody Sanchez with a stinging left hand in the fourth round and the fight was stopped by the ringside physician due to multiple cuts suffered by the popular Sanchez. The time of the stoppage was 1:44.

As a boxer, Trout has won his last five bouts, with a record of 36-5-1 and 18 knockouts. The bagged his last boxing win in December.

Making his bare knuckle heavyweight debut, towering former NFL All-Pro Defensive Lineman Greg Hardy, (0-1) was stopped in the second round by Josh Watson, (2-1).

Watson scored a knockdown of Hardy in the opening stanza as the referee ruled that the ropes kept him up. Following some two-way action for most of the second round, Watson knocked Hardy down with a battering left hand earning the victory at 0:19 of the stanza.

Hardy was coming off an upset four round decision win over heavyweight prospect Hasim Rahman Jr, in a boxing match that was held last November. Hardy has a 2-0 record in the squared circle.

Diego Sanchez to file appeal seeking to overturn result in Austin Trout fight over greasing allegations

Diego Sanchez and his team are filing a formal appeal with the New Mexico Athletic Commission seeking to overturn the result in his recent loss to Austin Trout in BKFC over allegations of greasing.

Sanchez’s representative Ricky Kottenstette confirmed the appeal will be filed with hopes to appear before the commission at the next available hearing in March.

“We will be filling a formal complaint with the NMAC to reverse the bout,” Kottenstette said in a statement to MMA Fighting. “In a sport where clinching is allowed it 100 percent eliminated his chance at implementing a key strategy in his game plan.”

The allegations over greasing came to light just after Sanchez suffered a fourth-round TKO loss to Trout in the co-main event at BKFC KnuckleMania 3, which was held in Albuquerque, N.M.

Sanchez posted a lengthy statement on his Instagram along with videos that showed Trout in his corner between rounds with the cutman applying Vaseline to the fighter’s face and then rubbing down his shoulders and neck.

The former Ultimate Fighter season 1 winner alleged that placing Vaseline on the shoulders and neck prevented him from effectively using his clinch, which was a primary weapon he intended to employ in the fight against a boxing champion like Trout.

“This was in between rounds! And the video before was before the fight [Guillermo Perez] and Austin’s corner in collaboration greasing shoulders and neck before the fight to thwart my game plan to actively strike from the clinch!” Sanchez wrote. “This changed the whole inside fight where I had my best chance to win fighting the five-time boxing world champion Austin Trout in BKFC.

“PLEASE HELP ME GET THIS LOSS OVERTURNED! I was cheated out of a fair fight and took scars that last a lifetime! And had to eat through a straw for three days! Had I got all greased up on my beard his punches would have slid off my chin as well!”

Sanchez continued in a separate post with additional videos showing Trout during the fight as he continued to allege cheating that prevented him from employing his strategy. Over three-plus rounds, Sanchez absorbed a lot of punishment and a couple of nasty cuts, which ultimately led to the doctor’s stoppage in the fourth round.

“I took a lot of extra damage in this bout that I shouldn’t have,” Sanchez said. ! I hope [BKFC president] Dave Feldman can make this right! He has always been true to me, doing me right! If any lawyers can help me get this loss overturned in time please contact me this was blatant cheating! They feared what I would have done in the clinch! I wouldn’t have took this fight if it was Queensbury rules I only took it because I watched Luis Palomino utilize the clinch by grabbing opponents head and actively striking while grabbing the back of the neck and shoulders! That was the fairness of the match up!

“I’m no idiot I would not try to box the five-time boxing world champion with no gloves! We agreed on a neutral battle ground. And the video does not lie! When I did get to his neck he was able to just slip out! I remembered being in the fight recognizing it but just kept focus on winning any way I could! These scars are for life and so is the loss.”

Sanchez now seeking to have the result in the fight overturned with the appeal being filed in New Mexico.

The 41-year-old veteran signed with BKFC after last competing in Eagle FC in 2022, which came after a 15-year career spent in the UFC.

Really, really stupid... Sanchez trying to make this a thing is cringe as hell. Trout fought Canelo and Cotto. Does Sanchez think he'll win an entire fight just by clinching? Delusional as hell! A bit embarrassed that Trout is doing this now.
