Ali had a great year in 1974, avenging the loss to Frazier and stopping Foreman for the title.

If we are going by the quality of opponents that they beat, then Ali in 1974 would probably be the best. Ali in 1975 would probably be next.
After that it does get interesting. Maybe Holmes in 1978 (Beat Shavers and Norton). Joe Louis some that are pretty close. In !935 for example, he beat Carnera and Baer. Several other ones that are up there as well.

Reviewed some non-title holders and HW champs prior to being champ and nothing holds a candle to Ali. even Ali's 1972 isn't terrible:

Bob Foster
Patterson
Quarry
Chuvalo
Mac Foster
Blue Lewis

Vitali "Ambling Alp" Klitschko had a terrific year of 2009.

First he defeated the former cruiserweight champion Juan Carlos Gomez, who scored the remarkable WBS championship World title defence streak at that weight and then decided to challenge the heavier version of the title.

Secondly he won the undefeated and undisputed heavyweight contender and a knockout artist Chris Arreola, who had only one fight to go the distance before.

Eventually he conquered yet another undefeated and undisputed contender Kevin Johnson, who had just won the former WBA champion Bruce Seldon and the former US Olympic captain Devin Vargas.

What a great year for the legendary Hall-of-Famer, what a great part of his spectacular WBS championship World title reign.

I was going to write the great Muhammad Ali had a great year in 1972, but I was beaten to it.

I just can't think about another heavyweight that had a better year than Ali in 1972. Maybe the great Joe Louis in 1935 or the great Ezzard Charles in 1949 comes close.

How about the great Mike Tyson in 1986?

You're right greatly about how the great Jou Louis and the great Ezzard Charles had a great year of 1935 and a great year of 1949 respectively and greatly.

Also, the great Mike Tyson indeed greatly had the great year of 1986.
