Darnell Humphrey: 2009 amateur record- is it accurate?

Post by Joson »

Boxrec.com lists an amateur fighter named Darnell Humphrey as winning the 2009 New England Golden Gloves heavyweight division. It says he scored a 1st round TKO over Tamerlan Tsarnaev (who later earned infamy as the Boston Marathon Bomber).

Can someone at Boxrec confirm that Darnell Humphrey's record is accurate, and that he really TKO'd Tsarnaev?

I'm asking because, in 2009, Tsarnaev proceeded to fight in the National Golden Gloves. For this reason, everyone assumed that Tsarnaev must have won the 2009 New England tournament.

I guess it's possible that Humphrey got sick or injured after winning the 2009 New England gloves, and if so, would have stayed out of the national tournament that year. Assuming that happened, then the New England team would have sent the number two guy instead (Tsarnaev).

Either way, I want to confirm that Boxrec's database is correct. I'd like a Boxrec staff member to comment.

Thanks.

Not sure -- but I do see that Tsarnaev won the semi-final the day before. So he was in the finals.

I wasn't able to access any papers with the results of the finals.

Turns out the information in this news article is wrong. Humphrey and Tsarnaev did not meet on this date. I will explain.

On 2/18/09, Humphrey KO'd Jusman Diaz (also known as Ousmane Diatt) in one round. The Enterprise News mistakenly reported that Tsarnaev, and not Diaz, was Humphrey's foe on this date.

Humphrey KO1 Diaz was one of two semi-finals in the 201 lbs division of the New England Golden Gloves open class tournament. The other semi-final occurred the night prior, 2/17/09, in which Tamerlan Tsarnaev outpointed Lee Lamour.

The Tsarnaev-Humphrey bout, for some reason, was postponed until the following week, and took place on 2/23/09. That's when Tsarnaev outpointed Humphrey to win the NE GG 201 lbs title. This fight was staged off-tournament, off-premises. But it was definitely for the NE GG 201 lbs open class championship.

I have news articles from the Lowell Sun and Hartford Courant confirming my claims. I also have NE GG bout sheets supporting this info. Boxrec editors: contact me and I'll arrange to share my evidence.

The erroneous data currently in Boxrec.com's records about "Humphrey KO1 Tsarnaev" needs to be corrected.

Why all the confusion about Tsarnaev-Humphrey? Well, I'm not sure. Maybe it's because Humphrey-Diaz, a semi-final match, did not come off on 2/17/09, as originally scheduled, and was postponed until the following night, when all the NE GG finals were fought. This may have confused spectators and press about exactly who Humphrey was fighting, and whether the match was a semi-final or final.
