Emile Griffith vs Winky Wright

Post by scorpio83 »

15 Rounds Super Welterweight Bout

I put the 15 round bout instead of 12 because Griffith mostly fought under the 15 rounder. Anyways, both fighters would trade jabs and counters as the southpaw Wright would outbox Griffith early, but Griffith would start countering his southpaw attacks with good jabs and combinations from every angle. Griffith would take a decision. What do you guys think and who do you got?

I feel like these 2 are very, very evenly matched. I feel like we'd be looking at fights that always went like 8 rounds to 7. 9 rounds to 6, and could go either way.

In a 12 rounder a draw wouldn't be a surprise. In a 15 rounder, one of 'em may have a 1 round edge. I think more often than not Griffith would have that edge, but it's not as if Winky was an idiot who was incapable of adjusting himself. I think these would've been pretty strategically interesting matches, albeit not the most exciting to watch. This is one for the purists.

Griffith was a truly great fighter and he wins a comfortable decision of Wright.

A toss up for me. Winky Wright was an exceptional 154-pounder. He did everything right.

So did the great Emile Griffith
