Tyson Fury, Oleksandr Usyk agree to terms on title fight

Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk are closing in on a deal for an undisputed heavyweight championship fight -- planned for April 29 at London's Wembley Stadium -- after both sides notified the WBA that they have agreed to terms, president Gilberto Mendoza told ESPN on Friday.

Mendoza said he received confirmation from both fighters' promoters that a tentative agreement is in place ahead of the WBA's 5 p.m. ET deadline for Usyk to defend his title against mandatory challenger Daniel Dubois. Dubois holds the WBA's "regular" title, but the organization continues to consolidate belts.

Fury, in an Instagram video posted Friday, called on Ukraine's Usyk to accept 30% to the Englishman's 70% of the cut for one of the biggest fights boxing can deliver. Fury holds the WBC title and is ESPN's No. 1 heavyweight (No. 7 pound-for-pound); Usyk owns the WBA, WBO and IBF belts and is ESPN's No. 2 heavyweight (No. 3 pound-for-pound).

As part of the deal, Usyk asked Fury to donate $1 million to relief efforts in Ukraine as the country continues to defend itself from Russia's invasion. The fight, once finalized, will be offered on ESPN pay-per-view in the U.S., sources said.

"They want 50%, Usyk and all this 'Tyson is being greedy,'" Fury said in the Instagram video. "From where I'm standing, Usyk, you and your team are worth 30. You either take it or you leave it. And if you don't want it, go fight Daniel Dubois at the Copper Box [Arena in London] and get a few million dollars.

"If you want to make some real money, come and fight The Gypsy King. ... I will say, for every day from today that you linger, mess around, I'm going to deduct 1% from the 30%. ... Sign the contract, get your money and get f---ed up. ... Tick, tock."

Fury (33-0-1, 24 KOs) stayed busy in December with a 10th-round TKO of Derek Chisora to retain his heavyweight title. After Fury stopped Dillian Whyte in six rounds last April, he announced his retirement, but it lasted only four months.

The 34-year-old Fury defeated another Ukrainian, Wladimir Klitschko, to win the unified heavyweight championship in 2015. He was out of the ring for nearly three years as he dealt with alcohol and substance abuse along with depression. During that hiatus, he ballooned to 400 pounds.

Fury returned to the ring with two wins over soft opposition before he survived two knockdowns vs. Deontay Wilder to settle for a draw in a fight most observers believed he won. Fury left no doubt in the rematch, a seventh-round TKO to win the WBC title. The trilogy fight, which Fury won via 11th-round KO, was named ESPN's Fight of the Year and Knockout of the Year for 2021.

"Hey greedy belly, I accept your offer, 70/30 split to fight on April 29 at Wembley," Usyk wrote on Instagram. "But you will promise to donate 1 million pounds to Ukraine immediately after the fight. And for every day of your delay, you will pay 1 % from your purse to Ukrainian people. Deal?"

Usyk (20-0, 13 KOs) won the undisputed cruiserweight championship with a unanimous-decision victory over Murat Gassiev in 2018 before he moved up to heavyweight in 2019. The Olympic gold medalist defeated Chisora in his second heavyweight fight before he signed for a bout with Anthony Joshua for three heavyweight titles.

Usyk, 36, defeated Joshua via unanimous decision in September 2021 and retained his unified championship with a split-decision win in the August rematch. The southpaw is one of the most skilled boxers in the world but also showed off his power against Joshua; he appeared on the verge of stopping AJ in the final round of the first fight.

Now, Fury and Usyk are on the verge of the biggest challenges of their illustrious careers, a matchup poised to crown boxing's first undisputed heavyweight champion in the four-belt era.

Tyson Fury Officially Starts Camp For Usyk Fight: “I Only Need 6 Weeks”

Tyson Fury has announced the start of a six week training camp to face WBA, WBO, and IBF world champion, Oleksandr Usyk.

Fury – who holds the WBC belt – is working towards a date of April 29 for the four-belt clash.

His announcement comes a day after the WBA were informed at the last minute to pause making other plans for Usyk as the pair had finally agreed terms to fight.

‘The Gypsy King’ posted a video on Instagram of him jogging on Morecambe Bay, informing fans that he didn’t need more than six weeks of prep.

“Good morning people, world. Today is the first day of my training for the Usyk fight. I don’t need six months, four months and all that. I got six weeks and a week rest. Done. Happy days. And I’m gonna impose my will on this little sneaky motherf***er. Cannot wait. Rule Britannia. Get up.

That really sounds like he was not expecting the fight to get made. Hilarious.

Good on him, though. He's trying to take it on the chin. Hope he can get ready, 6 weeks is tight.

I originally thought it would be Usyk by decision, but after hearing that breathing and knowing the pace Usyk fights at, I think this could be a retirement TKO.

Tyson Fury would rather be an actor playing a boxer than actually being a boxer. He gets that from his loud mouth old man. However, it just so happens Tyson is actually a good boxer. He should stick to the boxing because the world has had enough of him everytime he opens his mouth.

Seems like fury was almost pricing himself out at 70-30 but usyk called his bluff. Usyks been training for months, and fury will have only 6 weeks.
Fury still has massive physical advantages, but if he is sloppy at all, and if his newer attacking style plays into usyks high tempo counter attacking, it will be very interesting.

The way he is talking as the bad guy too, will karma play a part in humbling the big man?

I don't think Fury wants this fight whatsoever. I think he's ready to hang them up. Anyways, I've always had Usyk in this one. Fury is too big and too slow to give Usyk trouble on the outside. Fury will have to be the utmost dirty he's ever fought.

The referee will play a key role here. I hope they don't bring out the one that did Klitschko/Povetkin. We need someone that will not hesitate to DQ Fury if he holds on for dear life every 2 seconds.

I suspect that Fury has been dieting and doing some training prior to all this since he looks like he's slimmer than the Chisora fight (268) and no man out of shape can 15 rounds sparring and doing roadwork, etc on the so called first day of camp.

People say Fury got his bluff called by Usyk, but I think people underestimate Fury's own brilliance in setting people up to be overconfident or feeling overly secure, etc. He made Klitschko think he was scared with all the antics, etc and it seems we have history repeating itself with people assuming Fury wants no part of Usyk.

I think Fury will come in somewhere between 257-262 and the tactic will be this: Since Fury is quick with his hands and feet anyways, and so rangy with his reach, he will take half steps and full steps constantly backwards pumping double, triple, quadruple jabs into the chest of Usyk. This will constantly keep Usyk on the receiving end of feather duster blows piling on points, and when Usyk tries to force his way in Fury will time him and land uppercuts or tie the Ukrainian up leaning on him.

I figure Fury will win 6 or 7 rounds pretty easily, then Usyk will go for broke. That's when the next few rounds might turn into a dog fight and I suspect Usyk will hit the floor once or twice with Fury having his own moment where he might look temporarily in danger too. Either Fury stops him late in the 11th or 12th, or Fury wins a comfortable unanimous decision. I think if it does go into the final round Tyson Fury will go completely for broke to try to knock him out.

n a video posted on his social media accounts, Fury said: “Hi, Tyson Fury here. Just a quick one, I have been talking to the lawyers today and Usyk’s people have been talking about rematch clauses and all that b******s.

“Here’s one to up the anti, how about there is no rematch f****ing clause for both of us.

“Let’s up the antis completely, never worry about what’s in the future and how many more dollars you can get after you’ve been defeated.

“Worry about the fight, April 29th, no rematch clause. The winner takes the glory, the loser goes home with his d**k in his hand. Agree to that you f***ing b***h.”

Alexander Krassyuk told talkSPORT the Brit is running scared: “The greedy belly is still trying to find a way to pull out.

“He bluffed and Usyk called his bluff.

“It’s all about nothing. He is not prepared, he is scared to fight and will try to find a way to avoid Usyk as long as it is possible. We don’t trust him.

“When we started negotiations, Fury’s side was the first to ask for a rematch clause.

“I don’t believe anyone will fight. Even if we accept this now, he will still try to find a way out.

“His credibility is already shot to pieces.

“It’s not serious already, the man is trying to escape. I’m really sorry for fighting fans. It’s a shame for a fighter to act like that. It’s not about money, it’s about fear.

“I don’t feel this fight will happen on April 29.”

I think most of us are skeptical of this fight happening.
But I usually doubt any big fight until the participants are in the ring

OLEKSANDR USYK'S MANAGER PROVIDES LATEST UPDATE ON TYSON FURY FIGHT WITH 'DEADLINE' APPROACHING

“I would say it’s more probable not to happen, rather than to happen. This week is the deadline. [Tuesday] we would expect to get the draft agreement somehow,” said Krassyuk when speaking to IFLTV.

“So probably it would take some time then to review and to see what’s in. I don’t know. This week should definitely be the deadline for all of us.”

“He’s not looking for Tyson Fury. He’s looking for the WBC belt – the one which is pending in his collection.”

I was a Fury fan. Not any more. He's exposed himself as a complete arse and a coward.

Usyk calls his bluff and accepts no rematch, I wonder what his next hurdle will be. Big John Fury as ref?
