Advice wanted (Hand/Knuckle Injuries)

Post by Matt Teague »

Any of you guys know any advice please
I've had a knuckle injury for quite a while and have had numerous physio sessions, I'e ultrasound, massage, laser treatment etc and a scan which didnt show any abnomalities, but carnt seem to fully heal my knuckle.
The problem lies wear the index finger touches the knuckle and on the inside of the knuckle, I have full movement in my fingers but if i catch a top of a head etc my knckle and finger swell up and it can be very painfull.
I've been advised to have a laser injected quarterzone but was wondering if anyone can offer any valuable advice as other have advised me to stay away from quartzone injections.
Any advice would be extremely appreciated !

Only advice I would give is do not have cortisone (quarterzone) injections as this will kill the pain but will not heal the injury and will probably make it worse in the long run. If physio is not sorting the problem then I guess you are not giving the injury enough time to heal by resting it. Sorry to break it to you fella, but stay away from punching bags, sparring etc. whilst allowing the physio and rest to work. Besides, you can always use this time to work on other aspects of your core fitness and body strength. Your punching ability will not suffer too much from a few weeks or even months rest.

You should be directing this question to a specialist.

That said, Cortisone injections are, as far as I am aware merely to kill pain, they do not help the injury heal, they were widely used in American football for years with players being injected and sent back onto the pitch with bad injuries.

good advice, definatly stay away from cortisone, I've had some of those injections in the past in my knee, all they do is mask the injury so you think you're ok, you will end up being in a worse state than before.

I found acupuncture to be beificial to my injury, certainly helped cope with the pain and stiffness in my knee, obviously try and sound out from recommendations from people that have had acupunture to find a reputable one.
Even ask your GP about acupunture as for certain injuries it can be got on the NHS, nothing to lose really.

Interestingly, the pain killing benefits were for the first time unequivocally scientifically proven by using sophisticated brain scanning equipment which revealed that the use of needles triggers a special dopamine receptor in the brain which blocks the transmission of pain in mild to moderate conditions, though not in the cases of chronic pain.

I f-cked up the knuckle of my middle finger on my right hand some geordie chav jumped me in Newcastle when he had an argument with my mates i hit him what must have been right on the top of his forehead and later was in agony the knuckle swoll up like a fookin balloon. You have my sympathy fella this happened to me last year and it hurt for ages, the swelling didnt go fully down for a long, long time & for a while whenever i hit the pads or punchbag at the gym afterwards it would swell up again (not to the same dimensions thankfully).

Doctor said it can take aaaages for knuckles to heal something about the tissue underneath it.

All this time later i'd say its still only 80%.

Exactly the same problem, I'd say Im about 85% and its been since dec 2004, only had one fight since then (dec 2005) and did it in the third round of that fight but its always in the back of my mind, and its a pain when i keep injuring it.
Probably best i continue with the physio and fully rest it,.

Best thing you can do is try and find a very good specialist... and give the knuckle a complete rest... not just a couple of weeks or a month... but a couple of months... try resting it completely for at least 6 months though this may sound like a nightmare, true rest is probably the only thing that will cure it... and keep away from injections because as others have already stated an injection will only allow you to go out and damage the knuckle even more...

Youve probably trapped the tendon in the elbow with shock. wiggle the finger follow the muscle to the elbow, then 2" off the elbow use your thumb and push the muscle into the elbow 5 or 6 times every 4 hours for 3 days. Should help a lot, its qiute common, the line has been injured and thats the problem I bet
