CANELO ALVAREZ CONFIRMS JOHN RYDER FIGHT IN MEXICO FOR MAY

Saúl 'Canelo' Álvarez will defend his Undisputed Super-Middleweight title against John Ryder at the Akron Stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico on Saturday May 6, live around the world on DAZN and DAZN PPV in the U.S & Canada – the first time in over a eleven and a half years that Canelo has fought in Mexico.

Canelo (58-2-2 39 KOs) defends his Undisputed crown for the second time after beating bitter rival Gennadiy Golovkin in their trilogy battle in Las Vegas in September, having ripped the IBF crown from Caleb Plant in Sin City in November 2021 with an 11th round stoppage.

The Mexican superstar will make an emotional return to his homeland for his latest Cinco de Mayo showdown, and it will be 4180 days since he last stepped through the ropes in Mexico, when he stopped Kermit Cintron in Mexico City in five rounds to defend his WBO World Light-Middleweight title.

The 32 year old four-weight World Champion fights for the 63rd time of his storied career as he closes in on 18 years as a pro. Cinco de Mayo weekend will see him fight for the 35th time in his homeland and it promises to be a spectacular occasion with the state of Jalisco marking 200 years of independence.

The champ took to social media on Tuesday to confirm the homecoming fight to his millions of followers.

WBO mandatory challenger Ryder (32-5 18 KOs) will be looking to spoil the party, as the popular Londoner travels to Mexico for the biggest fight of his 12-year career. ‘The Gorilla’ landed the WBO interim title in his last fight when Zach Parker retired on his stool after four rounds of their clash in London, England in November.

That win for the 34 year old followed a career-best victory earlier in 2022 over former Middleweight ruler and old Canelo foe Daniel Jacobs, with Ryder having also tackled three other Britons who have taken on the Mexican king, challenging Callum Smith for the Super-Middleweight World crown after fights with Billy Joe Saunders and Rocky Fielding.

“I feel really happy to be coming back in May because following my surgery, I was unsure of when I'd be coming back,” said Canelo. “Returning to the ring and coming back to fight in Jalisco, where I'm from, makes me especially happy. And in John Ryder, I'm facing a very competitive fighter.”

“There’s no denying that Canelo is one of the greats and I’ve got a lot of respect for what he’s achieved in the sport but I fully believe this is my time fulfil my dream of becoming a World champion,” said Ryder.

“I’m not going over there for a holiday. For me this is purely business and my full focus is on going into his backyard in Guadalajara on May 6 and bringing those belts back with me to the UK. I want to thank the team, Tony and Charlie Sims and Matchroom Boxing for making this happen.”

“Canelo’s return to Mexico is historic for Mexican boxing,” said trainer Eddy Reynoso. “He is returning as an Undisputed champion, this is proof that a Mexican can succeed outside his country with discipline and love for his sport.

“I feel proud of all of this, because the dream of a kid who started in Guadalajara came true and he returns as a winner!”

“This is a moment that will be forever engrained in the history of boxing and Mexican sport,” said Eddie Hearn. “Canelo Alvarez defending his undisputed championship in his hometown in front of 50,000 fans will be an incredible sight and a night we will never forget.

“In John Ryder, you have a mandatory challenger that has paid his dues and off the back of big wins against Daniel Jacobs and Zach Parker is ready for the ultimate challenge. See you May 6 in Guadalajara for something very special, live on DAZN.”

“It doesn’t get bigger than Canelo in Mexico,” Joe Markowski, CEO North America, DAZN Group said, “Canelo returning home, John Ryder coming to spoil the party after a big win versus Daniel Jacobs last time out; this has the makings of a classic. Tune in to this historic event live on DAZN around the world and in Mexico for the very first time.”

An announcement on ticket sale dates will be made soon.

Ah yes, the fatted Ryder calf is ready.

Canelo's regular Cinqo de Mayo money collecting operation can go ahead once more.

Everyone can get to see one of sports best finance hoovering operations in action for themselves.

What a terrible fight. So many people want to fight John Ryder like he's a huge draw or something. I'd take a rematch with Lara over this.

Canelo isn't even about belts. I'd say rematch Danny Jacobs, the guy that beat Ryder.

John Ryder: "I've Earned This Shot At Canelo Three Times Over; I Really Deserve To Be Here"

“It seemed like a lifetime away months and years ago,” Ryder said. “But I’m finally here now and I feel like I really do deserve to be here. I’ve paid my dues in this sport and I’ve earned this shot three times over for me. So, yeah, I feel like I really deserve to be here and deserve this shot.”

“Don’t shoot me down,” Ryder said. “I’m still dreaming, so let me live my dream. And listen, keep your opinions to yourself. I’m not reading them, don’t care. I’m doing this for me. I’m not doing it for you. Go about your business. Life can’t be that bad that you gotta worry about me too much.”

This is the kinda fight that shows me that Canelo is kinda wrapping up his career. Or at least just having a taking it easy year. This is a guy he could've fought in March, and then scheduled a real fight for May, but instead it's the Cinco de Mayo weekend fight.

Basically I guess he just wanted to make sure he had a KO win on the Mexican Holiday.

John will train hard for this, and he is no quitter, so he will give it everything.
Canelo hasn't fought a swarmer/mauler like him in a long while, so that is an advantage for Ryder.
I can't complain that Ryder hasn't earned his spot, he genuinely has.
It's a mandatory. It happens.
I'll watch it, but DAZN can suck my salty balls before I pay for it, the greedy bastards.

Decent fight. Its more like a warm up fight before (I hope so) Canelo would rematch Bivol. Ryder is a decent fighter on the same level with Callum Smith and BJS.

Canelo also had a surgery on his left wrist after the GGG trilogy. So its normal to have a tune up fight before he's gonna rematch Bivol.

I'm predicting a closer than expected fight, but cards won't reflect that.

If Canelo struggles to win, maybe he retires?

I think there are 2 or 3 at 168 that may beat Canelo if given the chance. I pray the Bivol rematch is at 175, but doubt if it happens. Bivol beat him soundly.

Yeah, Ryder may be much more competitive vs Canelo than people think.

Ryder: "The Plan is To Beat Canelo - Then Ask Him 'When Do You Want The Rematch?'"

Ryder said: “Look, I know there has been a lot of negativity towards me as the choice of opponent. Let’s be fair, people just want to see him fight Benavidez or do the Bivol rematch.

“But in his words, he’s coming back from injury and he wants to test everything out - and I’m that test.

“But listen, I’ve got other plans, why would I care what people think? I don’t really care what people say about me or what they think about the fight. If anything it will push me on.

“I have a job to do so now it is about me making sure I do that to the best of my ability, not worry about what people say about the fight. It means I will be proving a lot of people wrong doesn’t it?

“Since I’ve been back in England I’ve had a lot of well wishers. Nobody has called me a wanker yet but there’s still time for that.

"Nobody has told me I’m going to get smashed yet - obviously on social media they have, many times. But out and about people have been wishing me luck and it’s been nice.”

--------
“I imagine it won’t be a factor here,” he adds. “He dropped the ball massively with the Bivol defeat, and didn’t look vintage in the Golovkin fight. Everything was expecting him to go in there and blast Golovkin away but that didn’t happen. He’s coming off an injury as well so it all remains to be seen if he has still got it as well but it’s not about complacency.

“People have asked me if I feel the pressure. The pressure is on him - he’s back home for the first time in 12 years, he needs to make a statement after the injury and the Bivol loss. He wants to prove he has plenty left if he is hoping to rematch Bivol so he needs to be dealing with me handily doesn’t he?”

--------
Ryder said: “We got the first draft through three weeks ago and that got changed, a few amendments which got handled pretty quickly. We signed it early in March and then we did the press tour.

“I know there was an issue with Mexican broadcast rights and DAZN which held things up a bit. But it’s full steam ahead for us now, Eddie has a part in the promotion albeit as a co-promotion with Canelo, and I’m set on making history.

“I’m happy with it, we’re both getting paid. It’s good for everyone. There’s a rematch clause, on his side obviously, not mine. But that’s the plan; beat him May 6 and then ask him ‘when do you want the rematch?’ I’m thinking bring it back to the UK or go to Vegas for that one.”
