Tex Cobb versus Bernado Mercado
Tex Cobb versus Bernado Mercado
Did anyone here actually see this fight ? I've read the stare down was epic.

Re: Tex Cobb versus Bernado Mercado
there's been some debat here over the years if the Cobb vrs Mercado fight may have been broadcast live
either on the East Coast or West Coast.
It was the undercard fight on the Larry Holmes vrs Renaldo Snipes live nationaly televised fight on ABC-TV back in 1981.
the fight before that ,that was shown live was Michael Dokes vrs George Chaplin.
I dont think Cobb vrs Mercado was televised but I think they showed some brief high-lights of it
between the Holmes and Dokes fight (especially the stare-down).

you can see a high-light of it at 2:10 of this clip tho.
Re: Tex Cobb versus Bernado Mercado
One of the mags covering the card complained that Dokes-Chaplin was televised while Cobb-Mercado wasn't.

Re: Tex Cobb versus Bernado Mercado
Tex Cobb would have made a great American Heavyweight Champion ( if only for a short while).
BTW did you notice how sharp he looked against Norton and Dokes compared to the Holmes fight ?
He would later admit to cocaine use at some point in his career, I wonder when he actually started ?
Dokes was of course a frequent cocaine user especially when he became a champion.

I watched this card on live television and the Cobb bout wasn't shown. As for highlights being televised- I can't remember.

sounds like the video may be somewhere ( perhaps Don King's film/video vaults on the second floor of his building in NYC?)

Cobb vs Mercado was not broadcast live that night. I remember the telecast very well. It showed Holmes vs. Snipes and Dokes vs Chaplin, but no Cobb vs Mercado.
