Agreed - and that makes Munguia's decision to engage in a tune-up before the GGG payday opportunity even more bizarre.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑08 Mar 2021, 08:49Mung is a loss waiting to happen, and has been for a few years now.Enlightened-One wrote: ↑08 Mar 2021, 08:41 So Munguia is competing in a stay-busy bout before facing the 39-year-old GGG in June/July.
That’s a risky move that might cause Munguia to lose his opportunity to receive a lucrative payday, because upsets happen, and fighters often suffer injuries (even when they do win) forcing them to sit on the side-lines to recover.
GGG only competes twice per year, so he’s still on track to face Munguia during the summer months and then Murata in December.

Munguia needs to shake any ring rust off before he'd fight GGG. If Golovkin could fight in 2021 Munguia(No. 7 mw by ESPN) and then Murata(No. 5 mw by Ring and ESPN), he'd have a good year.

It would admittedly be GGG's best year since 2017.apollo creed wrote: ↑08 Mar 2021, 09:47 Munguia needs to shake any ring rust off before he'd fight GGG. If Golovkin could fight in 2021 Munguia(No. 7 mw by ESPN) and then Murata(No. 5 mw by Ring and ESPN), he'd have a good year.![]()

Since 2018...
The Vanes Martirosyan, Steve Rolls and Kamil Szeremeta fights were mismatches. That's not my opinion, but the general perception of the forum.
GGG was unofficially beaten by Sergiy Derevyanchenko. Again, this was the commonly held perception of the media and the forum.
And GGG was defeated by Canelo. For sure, this was a very close fight, but most media sources claimed the Mexican just about deserved the nod. It wasn't a robbery, even if you had Gennadiy winning.
So yes, I agree, victories for Golovkin over Munguia and Murata would be an impressive return to form for a fighter that will be competing as a 39 year old (even though I only consider both guys as fringe top-ten world-rated 160lb-ers). It would still be an impressive feat none-the-less.

De La Hoya: Munguia Will KO Slow, Beatable Golovkin; Canelo Doesn't Want To Fight GGG
Golden Boy Promotions head Oscar De La Hoya expects a big drama show should Jaime Munguia and Gennadiy Golovkin ever meet in a fight.
In the meantime, Munguia (36-0, 29 KOs) is next set to face former world title challenger Maciej Sulecki (29-2, 11KOs) in a middleweight match targeted for April 24, BS.com’s Jake Donovan reported Monday.
Before the Munguia bout was formalized against his Polish foe, a more desired match against the Kazakh KO artist was contemplated.
“I believe [Munguia-Golovkin] is the fight to make, and that’s a fight that fight fans would really, really enjoy,” De La Hoya told Fino Boxing. “Just the fact that Canelo doesn’t want to fight GGG anymore, I think [Canelo] passed that. Why not fight another Mexican in Jaime Munguia, which would be a barnburner.
“Jaime Munguia comes forward, he fights, and it would be a great fight, a great matchup. We know that Golovkin doesn’t shy away from any matchup. So that’s one fight I can hopefully make down the road.”
Munguia and Golovkin were supposed to fight on May 5, 2018 but the Nevada State Athletic Commission did not approve the still-green Munguia as a strong enough replacement opponent after the GGG-Canelo Alvarez sequel was originally scrapped.
Instead, Munguia fought an undersized Sadam Ali a week later and captured his first world title at the age of 21 as a super welterweight.
“Now I feel Jaime Munguia is more than ready for Golovkin,” said De La Hoya. “I say Jaime Munguia knocks him out. Straight-out knockout just because of the styles. Just because of Golovkin’s last performance [against Kamil Szeremeta in December]. He looked slow; he looked beatable. And he had nobody in front of him, obviously. I feel like with Jaime Munguia’s age, his strength, and youth, obviously, he can just adapt. I’m ready; let’s do it … Jaime Munguia is a star in the making, and he’s the next big Mexican champion.”

To be fair, Canelo did say that he wasn't particularly interested in a third fight against GGG.

Jaime Munguia To Gennadiy Golovkin: See You In May '23!
Jaime Munguia has heard the public demand calling for more meaningful fights.
The hope on his end is that the next fight will be for a shot at becoming a two-division titlist.
“[Gennadiy] Golovkin, see you in May '23,” insisted Munguia.
The callout came during the post-fight interview for Munguia’s third-round knockout of Argentina’s Gonzalo Coria (21-6, 8 KOs), whom he dropped twice en route to the blowout win Saturday evening at Arena Astros in Guadalajara, Mexico. The fight was met with harsh industry-wide criticism to where most of the pre-fight coverage focused more on his desired fights in 2023. That conversation naturally led to WBA/IBF/IBO middleweight titlist Gennadiy Golovkin (42-2-1, 37 KOs) and reigning WBC beltholder Jermall Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs).
Tijuana’s Munguia (41-0, 33 KOs) was previously in position to challenge Charlo this past June in the American’s hometown of Houston, Texas. A deal was seemingly reached for a Showtime-exclusive telecast. However, it fell apart at the eleventh-hour when Munguia’s co-promoters, Zanfer Boxing and Golden Boy Promotions, stood firm on DAZN having to be involved in some capacity.
Munguia has actually fought twice since those collapsed talks—a fifth-round knockout of Jimmy ‘Kilrain’ Kelly on June 11 and Saturday’s win over Coria—while Charlo has not fought at all in 2022 or since last June. It is unclear when Charlo will be cleared to return to the ring, which has prompted Munguia to revisit old plans for a new foe.
The first significant mention of Munguia in a relevant fight came when his team sought to land a fight with then-unbeaten Golovkin to help save a May 2018 show in Las Vegas. Golovkin was due to rematch Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, with those plans delayed until September 2018 due to Guadalajara’s Alvarez being dealt a six-month suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission due to testing positive for trace amounts of Clenbuterol earlier that February.
Munguia was viewed as a rising junior middleweight prospect at the time. His competition level wasn’t quite there for the Nevada commission to approve him as an opponent for Golovkin, as the two went their separate ways.
Munguia went on to win the WBO junior middleweight title in a fourth-round knockout of Sadam Ali, cramming five title defenses in a 14-month window. His fourth-round knockout of Patrick Allotey in September 2019 was his last as a junior middleweight titlist, relinquishing the belt later that year to campaign at middleweight.
By that point, Golovkin suffered his first defeat—a majority decision to Alvarez twelve months after the two fought to a draw—to end his unified WBA/WBC/IBF middleweight title reign. He also regained his IBF belt by the time Munguia arrived at middleweight, outpointing Sergiy Derevyanchenko in October 2019 and having made just two title defenses.
One came earlier this year in a ninth-round knockout of Ryota Murata in their April 9 WBA/IBF unification bout in Saitama, Japan. Golovkin then lost a twelve-round decision to Alvarez in their September 17 trilogy bout for Alvarez’s undisputed super middleweight championship in Las Vegas before returning to 160. The move back down to middleweight was met with two mandatory title defenses in waiting—WBA ‘Regular’ titlist Erislandy Lara and IBF number-one contender Esquiva Falcao.
Munguia is undoubtedly qualified to be approved as a challenger for Golovkin anywhere in the world by this point. Whether or not he can skip the line to get him next is another conversation, though one he is ready to have in light of growing criticism over a soft middleweight run to this point.
“I was happy to be in the ring,” Munguia admitted after Saturday’s win before focusing on a more productive 2023 campaign. “This year we couldn’t do Charlo, but hopefully we can do it next year.
“But we know that Gennadiy Golovkin is not signed with (a rival promoter). I would love to meet him in May.”

Munguia's Promoter: "We're Trying To Get Golovkin For June 10, We're Not Thinking of Bivol"
“We are not thinking of Bivol for June 10th”, Beltran told Izquierdazo. “Jaime has a date with DAZN for June 10th. It was our side who looked for Bivol, but we couldn’t make a deal. Unfortunately, Bivol is not very popular. He has been effective in the ring, but he is not very popular. We would love to fight with him in the future, but we are talking about the two weight classes above (Munguia’s division). We would fight with him (Bivol) if nobody else wants to. If someone runs away from him (Bivol), we will face him”.
“We are trying to get a fight with Gennady Golovkin for June 10th”, Beltran said. “We are trying”.
“Yes, we have been talking to Tom Loeffler (GGG’s promoter)”, Beltran said. “The truth is that there have been actual discussions, and we want to close it soon. We would love to fight Golovkin. We have looked for that fight for a long time, since the beginning of Jaime’s career, and we couldn’t make it. But we are trying again."

Against the 3rd Canelo fight, G was playing somehow safe and he fought in a negative way to not engage himself in heavy exchanges and be countered too much. He knew that he must fight alright , not get hurt, stopped, injured and he has to get the paycheck.
Good self-preservation instinct and good fighting strategy.
Munguia wasn't able to stop a washed-up Rosado.

Even old, tired GGG absolutely smashes Munguia… easy work.
