Janibek Alimkhanuly-Steven Butler Main Event Set For May 13 On ESPN; Venue TBD

Janibek Alimkhanuly’s handlers had difficulty securing the type of opponent the WBO middleweight champion wanted for his second title defense.

Boxing Scene has learned that the Kazakh southpaw therefore will defend his 160-pound championship against Steven Butler on May 13. ESPN will televise the Alimkhanuly-Butler bout as a 12-round main event, but the venue for the card they will headline hasn’t been solidified.

Former WBO junior middleweight champ Liam Smith is the WBO’s number one contender for Alimkhanuly’s title, but Smith is contractually obliged to an immediate rematch with Chris Eubank Jr.

Smith (33-3-1, 20 KOs) upset Eubank (32-3, 23 KOs) by fourth-round technical knockout January 21 at AO Arena in Manchester England. Liverpool’s Smith and Brighton’s Eubank don’t have a date for their second bout, but Smith is unavailable to challenge Alimkhanuly (13-0, 8 KOs) next due to their rematch clause.

Second-ranked Jaime Munguia (41-0, 33 KOs) wasn’t interested in battling Alimkhanuly, either. Butler is ranked sixth among the WBO’s middleweight contenders.

Montreal’s Butler (32-3-1, 26 KOs) has won four fights in a row since Mexican underdog Jose de Jesus Macias (28-11-4, 14 KOs, 7 KOs) surprisingly stopped him in the fifth round of their January 2021 bout in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

The 29-year-old Alimkhanuly, who is promoted by Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc., will still be heavily favored in a fourth consecutive contest.

The Oxnard, California resident had a tougher time than expected during his most recent fight against England’s Denzel Bentley, though. London’s Bentley (17-2-1, 14 KOs) withstood Alimkhanuly’s early onslaught to make their 12-round, 160-pound championship match competitive November 12 in Las Vegas.

Alimkhanuly still won on all three scorecards – 118-110, 116-112 and 116-112 – at Palms Casino Resort’s Pearl Concert Theater. He knocked out another British underdog, Danny Dignum (14-1-1, 8 KOs), in the second round of his prior appearance, which took place last May 21 at Resorts World Las Vegas, to win the WBO interim middleweight title.

The WBO removed the interim tag from Alimkhanuly’s championship when WBO middleweight champ Demetrius Andrade gave up his belt to move up to the 168-pound division.

Andrade is the biggest duck for sure, but the other middleweights are about the same in ducking each other, including Golovkin. Everyone were targeting Canelo. Golovkin now targets Charlo probably. Canelo won't be available soon for any middleweights, except of maybe Charlo. Also, any of them would have to move up to SMW. If Benavidez wins Plant, he'll try to get the Canelo bout too.

Janibek should try to get a fight with Lara since Lara is just marking time with crap opposition as well. Lara hasn’t fought a legitimate opponent in four years and he’s not getting any younger

Jason Moloney-Vincent Astrolabio WBO Title Fight, May 13 Co-Feature To Alimkhanuly-Butler

Jason Moloney is finally set for his next attempt at becoming a bantamweight titlist.

Boxing Scene has confirmed that a deal has been reached and a date set for Moloney’s ordered vacant WBO bantamweight title fight versus Vincent Astrolabio. Their bout is set to take place May 13, as the ESPN co-feature to the already announced Janibek Alimkhanuly-Steven Butler WBO middleweight title fight.

A location has yet to be confirmed for what is now a title fight doubleheader.

Moloney (25-2, 19 KOs) suffered his only two defeats in prior title bids and remains one of the top bantamweights in the world. The 32-year-old contender from Kingscliff, Australia dropped a tightly contested split decision to Puerto Rico’s Emmanuel Rodriguez in their October 2018 IBF title fight in Orlando, Florida and suffered a seventh-round stoppage to Naoya Inoue in their October 2020 WBA/IBF title fight in Las Vegas.

Inoue (24-0, 21 KOs) went on to fully unify the bantamweight division before vacating all four major titles to compete at junior featherweight. He will next face unbeaten WBC and WBO champ Stephen Fulton (21-0, 8 KOs) later this summer.

Moloney has won four straight since heading into his latest title challenge. It comes as twin brother Andrew Moloney (25-2, 16 KOs) is set to face Japan’s Junto Nakatani (24-0, 18 KOs) for the vacant WBO junior bantamweight title on a separate Top Rank card one week later in Las Vegas.

He emerged as the number-one contender with the WBC following a twelve-round win over Nawaphon Kaikanha in their title eliminator last October 16 in Melbourne. Moloney also elevated to the number-one position with the WBO, whose title he chose to pursue after his team abandoned talks for a previously ordered vacant WBC title fight versus former four-division champ Nonito Donaire (42-7, 28 KOs).

Astrolabio (18-3, 13 KOs) also had his choice of which vacant title to pursue.

The 25-year Filipino—who now lives and trains in Las Vegas—was in line to next face Rodriguez in a vacant IBF title fight after both won separate eliminators in the fourth quarter of 2021. Astrolabio earned his place in line after a one-sided beatdown of Nikolai Potapov en route to a sixth-round knockout last December 17 in Las Vegas.

The win capped a breakout year for Astrolabio, who began his 2022 campaign with a ten-round decision victory over former lineal junior featherweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux last February 26 in Dubai. Following the Potapov win and Inoue’s title vacancy, Astrolabio and Rodriguez were ordered to enter talks for a title fight that seemed all but certain to make its way to the schedule.

Astrolabio’s team instead fancied a shot at Moloney in the second official bantamweight title fight in the post-Inoue era. Fittingly, first up is the April 16 vacant WBA title fight between Takuma Inoue—Naoya’s younger brother—and Liborio Solis in Tokyo.

Alimkhanuly-Butler, Moloney-Astrolabio Card May 13 Headed To Stockton, California

Janibek Alimkhanuly and Steven Butler have a site for their middleweight championship match May 13.

Promoter Top Rank announced Wednesday that their 12-round fight for Alimkhanuly’s WBO 160-pound title will headline a card at Stockton Arena in Stockton, California. ESPN will televise Alimkhanuly-Butler as the main event of a three-bout broadcast.

Neither Kazakhstan’s Alimkhanuly nor Canada’s Butler are from the Stockton area, but Top Rank has previously staged shows at this venue. Russian knockout artist Artur Beterbiev knocked out Radivoje Kalajdzic in the fifth round of their IBF light heavyweight title fight in May 2019 at Stockton Arena.

Like Beterbiev, Alimkhanuly (13-0, 8 KOs) is heavily favored to beat Butler (32-3-1, 26 KOs). The 29-year-old Alimkhanuly, a southpaw who wants higher-profile fights, will make an optional defense of his WBO belt against Montreal’s Butler, who is ranked sixth by the WBO.

ESPN’s co-feature May 13 is a 12-round WBO bantamweight championship bout between Jason Moloney and Vincent Astrolabio. Australia’s Moloney (25-2, 19 KOs), who is ranked number one by the WBO in the 118-pound division, will face the Philippines’ Astrolabio (18-3, 13 KOs), the WBO’s second-ranked contender, for its vacant bantamweight title.

Japan’s Naoya Inoue was boxing’s undisputed bantamweight champion, but he gave up his IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO belts to move up to the 122-pound division. Inoue (24-0, 21 KOs) was supposed to challenge unbeaten WBC/WBO champ Stephen Fulton (21-0, 8 KOs) on May 7, but he suffered a knee injury while training that caused their bout to be postponed until July 25 at Ariake Arena in Tokyo.

Philadelphia’s Fulton and Inoue were supposed to meet May 7 at Yokohama Arena in Yokohama, Japan, Inoue’s hometown. The postponement necessitated a venue change as well.

Top Rank’s May 13 card also will include a fight that will feature Stockton native Gabe Flores (21-2, 7 KOs) in a lightweight bout against an opponent to be determined. Other fighters from Stockton are expected to compete on the undercard as well.

Press Release | Ruben Villa Signs with Top Rank, Returns on Alimkhanuly-Butler Card

Featherweight contender Ruben “Drac” Villa, the 25-year-old southpaw dynamo from Salinas, California, has inked a multi-fight promotional contract with Top Rank. Villa will make his ring return in an eight-rounder Saturday, May 13, on the undercard of the Janibek Alimkhanuly-Steven Butler WBO middleweight title fight at Stockton Arena in Stockton, California.

“Ruben Villa has everything it takes to become a world champion,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “He’s a young, talented southpaw who has already tested himself at the sport’s highest level. His future is very bright.”

Villa said, "I have always dreamed of fighting on ESPN consistently and being with Top Rank to make the big fights. I want to win a world title and to do it as soon as possible. I look forward to fighting in Stockton, where my hometown fans will be out in full force."

"Villa will be a world champion very soon,” said Rick Mirigian, Villa’s manager. “This partnership was the perfect fit, and we thank Top Rank for a tremendous deal for Ruben to prove he belongs with the top featherweights.”

Villa (19-1, 6 KOs) turned pro in 2016 and captured the WBO International featherweight strap in May 2019 with a unanimous decision over Luis Alberto Lopez, who is now the IBF featherweight world champion. Four months after toppling Lopez, he pitched a shutout over top Mexican contender Jose Enrique Vivas.

Those victories helped earn him a shot at Emanuel Navarrete for the WBO featherweight world title in October 2020. Navarrete dropped Villa in the first and fourth rounds, but Villa outboxed Navarrete for long stretches. The two knockdowns were critical, as Navarrete notched a unanimous decision by scores of 114-112 2x and 115-111. Villa has fought once since the Navarrete loss, knocking out Horacio Garcia in the ninth round last April.

For one thing, Top Rank has to put some $ out there to get a name or a belt holder.

Carlos Adames was willing to fight him several months ago, then Janibek said he only wanted other real champs, not secondary beltholders. Didn't he get his emailed to him? 🙄

Jason Moloney: "Maybe Astrolabio's People See Me As Easier Option; They Made Big Mistake"

“I was a little bit surprised that we are fighting Astrolabio,” Moloney told BS.com. “He and Rodriguez both had ties with PBC (Premier Boxing Champions) and we figured that was just the easier route for them.”

“I guess on paper, Rodriguez beat me by split decision, so maybe Astrolabio’s people see me on paper as the easier option. I’m happy they made that decision. They won’t be happy, because they made a big mistake by choosing me.”

“I’m excited to fight him. He’s a very good opponent,” stated Moloney. “I was ready to fight Astrolabio or Donaire so this is just fine. He’s heavy handed and extremely hungry. It’s every fighter’s dream to become world champion.

“No doubt he's prepared very hard but I’m confident that I’m levels above him. This weekend will end with me realizing my dream and becoming world champion.”

We could say that Janibek is doing what Andrade did/does. If Janibek would fight Adames and beat him then he'd get that interim wbc belt and have a better shot to fight big Charlo.
