Anthony Olascuaga Steps In To Face WBA/WBC Champ Kenshiro Teraji, Replaces 'Bomba' Gonzalez

Kenshiro Teraji remains on course to defend his junior flyweight championship.

Boxing Scene has confirmed that Anthony Olascuaga has been tabbed to next challenge Teraji atop an April 8 ESPN+ show from Ariake Arena in Tokyo. Los Angeles’ Olascuaga was among the leading candidates to land the short-notice assignment after WBO junior flyweight titlist Jonathan ‘Bomba’ Gonzalez was diagnosed with mycoplasma pneumonia which forced him out of the planned three-belt unification bout.

Teraji will defend his lineal, WBA and WBC junior flyweight championship in their scheduled twelve-round contest. The previous pairing with Gonzalez would have marked his second straight unification bout.

Instead, he faces arguably a stiffer—even if less experienced—challenge.

To the credit of Teraji, Olascuaga (5-0, 3 KOs) is the riskier of the two proposed replacement opponents. As previously reported by Boxing Scene, Gerardo Zapata (14-1, 5 KOs)—a Nicaraguan junior flyweight based out of Miami— was also in the mix and was prepared to step down from a scheduled April 14 bout in Panama City, Panama to challenge for the world crown. Both boxers are promoted by Felix ‘Tutico’ Zabala’s All Star Boxing, Inc.

Those plans remain intact, as Teraji’s team agreed to next face the fast-rising Olascuaga, a Los Angeles native who is just 30 months into his pro career. The 24-year-old Los Angeleno has been moved ambitiously by his team and has so far risen to the occasion.

Olascuaga enters his first career title fight on the heels of back-to-back knockout wins in Niagara Falls, New York. His October 14 bout with Marco Sustaita was scheduled for ten rounds, though Olascuaga needed less than three minutes to post his latest victory.

It now leads to by far the biggest fight of his prodigious pro journey.

Kyoto’s Teraji (20-1, 12 KOs), 31, can certainly relate to the rapid rise of his new challenger.

He claimed the WBC junior flyweight title in just his tenth pro fight after a majority decision win over Ganigan Lopez in May 2017. Eight successful defenses followed before a stunning tenth-round knockout defeat to Masamichi Yabuki in their September 2021 slugfest that gained recognition among the year’s best fights.

The bout was previously delayed by 12 days after Teraji tested positive for Covid and was forced to postpone the original fight date. He was at full strength for their rematch last March 19, which saw Teraji manhandle his countryman inside of three rounds to regain his title. The feat was followed by his best win to date, a stunningly one-sided seventh-round stoppage of unbeaten countryman and WBA titlist Hiroto Kyoguchi (16-1, 11 KOs) last November 1 at Saitama (Japan) Super Arena.

The same show saw Puerto Rico’s Gonzalez (27-3-1, 15 KOs) defend his WBO belt for the second time following a twelve-round, unanimous decision victory over Tokyo’s Shokichi Iwata (9-1, 6 KOs). The placement was by design, as a three-belt unification fight was already in discussion prior to the event.

Those plans are now on hold and could get torched altogether.

Hekkie Budler is the WBC number-one contender dating back to his June 25 win over Elwin Soto and agreed to stand down only to allow the unification bout to proceed. The former unified titlist earned the WBC mandatory slot after a twelve-round decision win over Soto, whom Gonzalez previously dethroned to win the WBO belt.

Daniel Matellon (13-0-2, 7 KOs) is the WBA number-one contender and has been vocal in demanding that the sanctioning body enforce his title shot. The 35-year-old Cuban—now based out of Panama City, Panama—held the now-defunct interim title and was since inserted in the number-one slot but has yet to hear when he will get his shot at the division’s top prize.

For now, Teraji can proceed with his career without any delay.

His bout versus Olascauga is one of two title fights on the show. Takuma Inoue is due to meet former WBA junior bantamweight titlist Liborio Solis (35-6-1, 16KOs) for the vacant WBA bantamweight title. The winner will be the first to fill the massive void left behind by Naoya Inoue (24-0, 21KOs), Takuma’s older brother and former undisputed bantamweight champion who is now competing at junior featherweight.

The card will also feature the boxing pro debut of combat sports star Tenshin Nasukawa, who faces Yuki Yonaha (12-4-1, 8 KOs) in a six-round junior featherweight contest billed locally as the evening’s headliner.

For real boxing fans, the true main event comes in the form of Teraji preserving his fight date.

Press Release

The show goes on. WBC/WBA light flyweight world champion Kenshiro “The Amazing Boy” Teraji was supposed to face WBO champ Jonathan Gonzalez in a three-belt unification tilt Saturday, April 8, at Ariake Arena in Tokyo, Japan. Gonzalez withdrew with an illness, and Teraji will now defend his titles against undefeated American challenger Anthony Olascuaga

The five-fight card will also feature Tenshin Nasukawa’s debut as a professional boxer. The former multi-division kickboxing world champion will face Yuki Yonaha in a six-round junior featherweight attraction.

Teraji-Olascuaga, Nasukawa-Yonaha and additional bouts will stream live and exclusively in the U.S. on ESPN+ starting at 3 a.m. ET/12 a.m. PT.

Teraji (20-1, 12 KOs) captured his first world title by defeating Ganigan Lopez for the WBC 108-pound strap. Teraji made eight defenses before losing the belt via 10th-round TKO to Masamichi Yabuki. The 31-year-old avenged the loss by stopping Yabuki in the third round of their rematch to regain the title. Teraji then notched his most impressive victory last November by stopping Hiroto Kyoguchi in the seventh round to unify the WBC and WBA championships.

Olascuaga (5-0, 3 KOs), a 24-year-old upstart from Los Angeles, turned pro in 2020 and won a regional flyweight belt in his third pro bout. He went 3-0 in 2022, toppling Gilberto Pedroza by unanimous decision in March, stopping the previously unbeaten Gustavo Perez Alvarez in six in May, and icing Marco Sustaita in one round last October. He will make his 108-pound debut against Teraji.

In other scheduled action on the ESPN+ stream:

Takuma Inoue (17-1, 4 KOs) vs. Liborio Solis (35-6-1, 16 KOs), 12 rounds, vacant WBA Bantamweight World Title—The younger brother of pound-for-pound phenom Naoya Inoue has won four straight fights since challenging Nordine Oubaali for the WBC crown. Solis, a former junior bantamweight world champion, will be making his fifth attempt at a bantamweight world title.

Kiko Martinez (44-11-2, 31 KOs) vs. Reiya Abe (24-3-1, 10 KOs), 12 rounds, IBF Featherweight World Title Eliminator —Spanish warrior Martinez is a two-weight world champion who hopes to regain the IBF featherweight crown currently held by Top Rank’s Luis Alberto Lopez. He is coming off a stunning fourth-round stoppage over European champion Jordan Gill. Abe has won five straight fights and has never been knocked out in the paid ranks.

Jin Sasaki (14-1-1, 13 KOs) vs. Keita Obara (26-4-1, 23 KOs), 12 rounds, Sasaki’s WBO Asia Pacific Welterweight Title.

Reiya Abe Soundly Outpoints Kiko Martinez To Become IBF Mandatory Challenger

Reiya Abe picked up the biggest win of his career to land in the featherweight title picture.

A terrific boxing performance exhibited by the resurgent contender was enough to soundly outpoint former two-division titlist Kiko Martinez. Judges Robert Hoyle (117-111), Don Trella (119-109) and Steve Weisfeld (119-109) were unanimous in scoring for Abe in their IBF featherweight title eliminator Saturday at Ariake Arena in Tokyo.

The crossroads battle saw Spain's Martinez start out in his usual aggressive fashion as he attempted to bully the Japanese southpaw seven years his junior. Abe survived a couple of brief rocky moments in the early rounds to settle down and take over the fight on the strength of his straight left hands and superior boxing skills.

Abe's performance was particularly impressive as he dealt with a deep cut over his right eye, which remarkably never became a factor in the fight. Martinez was not without his own wounds, as his right eye was swollen from the number of straight left hands landed by Abe whose superior work rate was the difference throughout the fight.

The win is the sixth in a row for Abe, who advanced to 25-3-1 (10KOs) and is now the IBF featherweight mandatory challenger. The title is held by Luis Alberto Lopez, who travels to the Belfast hometown of 2012 Olympic Bronze medalist and former title challenger Michael Conlan on May 27 for his first title defense.

Martinez fell to 44-12-2 (30KOs) with the defeat, the second in his past three starts. For now, it stalls the hope for Martinez's bid to become a three-time titleholder in two weight divisions.

Tenshin Nasukawa (debut) vs Yuki Yonaha (12-4-1, 8 KO), junior featherweights, 6 rounds

- Nasukawa is a 24-year-old southpaw making his official pro boxing debut, though if you remember his name and you're purely a boxing fan, it's likely because he had an exhibition with the much bigger, actual pro boxing great Floyd Mayweather a couple years ago, where he got stopped and people wondered if the exhibition was "fixed," which is a funny idea to me. Nasukawa is a great kickboxer and could be an interesting pro boxer if he's really digging in on the sport.

- Yonaha, 32, has been around, has some power, not by any means a total zero as the opponent in a pro debut.

The pro boxing debut of a huge star and kickboxing great!

SCORES: 59-55, 60-53, 60-53 for Tenshin Nasukawa

If only Takuma had his brothers power and chin, he would be unbeatable.

How is this 5-0 guy getting a world title shot? Is he an ex kickboxing champion or something. Money bags have been exchanged

Exactly I know the smaller guys don't have the depth of the bigger divisions but some of the title challengers is ridiculous and the Japanese especially get a bit of an easy ride on this

ESPN went awol so just caught the KO, That’s got to be one of the hardest sixth pro fight you’ll ever see. But the kid really gave it a go, a lesser champion and he might have won: terrific stuff. I hope he comes back stronger though from that conclusive knock out.
