The former British Heavyweight Champion
I had heard he was pretty good.

I have heard it said bya few boxing people of the era that if Joe Erskine could punch, he would have been the best British heavy of the era. How far that takes him on the world stage is a different question, but definitely a very good stylist.

His manner of boxing reminds one of Brian London's style, but a lot more elusive.

the reason for starting this thread up was because last week I was reading the book
I ONLY TALK WINNING by Angelo Dundee ( published in 1985)
and in it he writes about going over to England in 1959 with Willie Pastrano
to fight Joe Erskine.
Pastrano lost.
page 147

"No excuses, No cop-outs.
Erskine was brilliant and the better man on that night.
I was surprised at his skill.
If he had only been a bigger man, and if he could have developed a heavier punch,
he would have been a world beater.
As it was, he beat Pastrano and a lot of other good fighters."
