Sources: Rolando Romero to face Alberto Puello for WBA belt

Rolando Romero will challenge Alberto Puello for the WBA junior lightweight title in the spring in a PBC bout, sources told ESPN.

Romero (14-1, 12 KOs) will move up to 140 pounds for his first career title shot. In his most recent fight, Romero was stopped by Gervonta Davis in the sixth round of a 135-pound bout. The May event was staged at a sold-out crowd in Brooklyn and headlined a Showtime pay-per-view, increasing Romero's profile in the defeat.

Romero's best win came in July 2021, a seventh-round TKO of former title challenger Anthony Yigit. The 27-year-old trash-talker from Las Vegas is a damaging puncher who delivers his shots from awkward angles.

Puello (21-0, 10 KOs), on the other hand, is a southpaw counter-puncher. The 28-year-old Dominican won the vacant 140-pound belt with a split-decision victory over Batyr Akhmedov in August.

gary antuanne's a beast, why the hell match him like this, he should have a title and be on his third defense by now , not fighting a fringe prospect with a padded record

So how does a guy KO'ed in his last fight get a title shot against the weakest champ in his very next fight?
It's like he is being manipulated into a rematch with Davis with a belt on the line?

He should be rematching Barthelemy, was very close and quite a controversial stoppage.

Alberto Puello-Rolly Romero: The Cosmopolitan Of Las Vegas Site For Showtime Card 5/13

Neither Alberto Puello nor Rolly Romero will have to travel far for their 140-pound title fight.

Boxing Scene has learned that their Premier Boxing Champions main event May 13 will take place at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Showtime will televise Puello-Romero as the main event of a tripleheader from The Chelsea, a cozy concert and event venue inside The Cosmopolitan.

Puello, a southpaw from the Dominican Republic who will make the first defense of his WBA super lightweight title, trains and resides part-time in Las Vegas. Romero is a native of North Las Vegas and lives and trains in the Las Vegas area.

Puello (21-0, 10 KOs) will defend the WBA belt he won seven months ago. The 28-year-old Puello beat Uzbekistan’s Batyr Akhmedov (9-2, 8 KOs) by split decision in their competitive 12-round bout to win that title August 20 at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

Puello and Akhmedov fought for a vacant WBA crown that former undisputed 140-pound champ Josh Taylor relinquished.

Romero (14-1, 12 KOs) will make his debut at the 140-pound limit when he opposes Puello.

The hard-hitting, 27-year-old contender hasn’t fought in the almost 10 months since rival Gervonta Davis handed him his first professional defeat. Baltimore’s Davis (28-0, 26 KOs) abruptly ended their competitive contest with a left hand that knocked Romero out in the sixth round of their WBA secondary 135-pound championship match May 28 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Junior welterweight contender Gary Antuanne Russell (16-0, 16 KOs), of Capitol Heights, Maryland, will box St. Louis’ Kent Cruz (16-0-3, 10 KOs) in Showtime’s 10-round co-feature May 13. Cuban junior welterweight contender Rances Barthelemy (29-2-1, 15 KOs, 1 NC) and Omar Juarez (14-1, 5 KOs), of Brownsville, Texas, are scheduled to square off in the 10-round opener of Showtime’s three-bout broadcast that night.

For some reason, I want to see him fight. Dude is such a train wreck. He has an odd charisma about him.

Like, he rolled a 3 Charisma, but he has magnetic personality perk.

Alberto Puello Vows To Make a Statement Against Rolly Romero

“On May 13th I plan on making a statement and putting on a show for the fans,” Puello told Boxing Scene.

“So far the other champions haven’t wanted to fight me but I think that after making a spectacular fight, they will have no choice but to fight me.”

“Rolly is a character. We know he likes to talk and even though he lost, he raised his profile in his fight against Gervonta Davis,” said Santos.

“I thought Rolly was winning the fight when he got caught but that is boxing. Anything can happen. He is dangerous but we have the perfect game plan to get the victory.”

Press Release | Batyr Akhmedov vs. Kenneth Sims Jr. WBA Title Eliminator To Open Puello-Romero Card

Undefeated WBA super lightweight world champion Alberto “La Avispa” Puello will make the first defense of his world title when he takes on hard-hitting contender Rolando “Rolly” Romero on Saturday, May 13 live on Showtime from The Chelsea inside The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas headlining a Premier Boxing Champions event.

The telecast begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and features two additional super lightweight bouts with former two-division world champion Rances Barthelemy dueling the all-action Omar “El Relámpago” Juarez in the 10-round super lightweight co-main event, plus top super lightweight contenders Batyr Akhmedov and ShoBox alum Kenneth Sims, Jr., meet in a 12-round WBA super lightweight world title eliminator opening up the telecast.

A native of San Juan de la Maguana, Dominican Republic, Puello (21-0, 10 KOs) now fights out of Las Vegas under the tutelage of renowned trainer Bob Santos, who also trains Puello’s childhood friend, former WBA 130-Pound World Champion Hector Luis Garcia. The 28-year-old captured his world championship in his most recent fight, earning a hard-fought decision victory over Akhmedov last August on Showtime.

Puello leapt up the rankings in July 2019, handing Jonathan Alonso his first career defeat with a unanimous decision victory that earned him an interim title. He was also successful in his U.S. debut in December 2021, as he scored a unanimous decision victory over Veshawn Owens in Owens’ hometown.

Part of the Mayweather Promotions stable, Romero (14-1, 12 KOs) is known for his brash talk that he backs up with power in both hands as well as an exciting, unique style that makes him must-see whenever he steps between the ropes. Romero returns to the ring for the first time since a May 2022 defeat against three-division champion Gervonta Davis. Prior to the Davis fight, Romero won an interim title in August 2020 by earning a close but unanimous decision over then unbeaten Jackson Marinez. The 27-year-old followed that victory up with a pair of impressive knockout triumphs, dominating slick contender Avery Sparrow with a seventh-round stoppage in January 2021 before dropping former title challenger Anthony Yigit three times on his way to another seventh-round stoppage in July 2021.

A native of Havana, Cuba now fighting out of Las Vegas, Barthelemy (29-2-1, 15 KOs) returns after a defeat to Gary Antuanne Russell last July in which many believed the referee waived off the fight prematurely. A world champion at 130 and 135 pounds, Barthelemy owns notable victories over Argenis Mendez, Antonio DeMarco, Mickey Bey and Denis Shafikov. His only other professional loss came in a 2018 140-pound championship rematch against Kiryl Relikh. Barthelemy comes from a fighting family, as he is the middle brother between the younger Leduan and the older Yan, who won a gold medal at the 2004 Olympics.

The 23-year-old Juarez (14-1, 5 KOs) enters the ring propelled by momentum gained from his efforts inside and outside the ring. He enters the fight on a three-bout winning streak following a June 2021 defeat to All Rivera, including 2022 victories over Ryan Karl in February and Austin Dulay in December. A native of Brownsville, Texas, Juarez has achieved recognition in his community by uplifting the state’s youth through motivational speaking, receiving commendations from the Texas State Senate and the Texas House of Representatives for his altruism.

Born in Uzbekistan and now fighting out of Los Angeles, Calif., Akhmedov (9-2, 8 KOs) represented Turkey at the 2016 Olympic Games. The 32-year-old turned pro in 2017 and won his first seven pro fights, with six coming by knockout. Most recently, Akhmedov lost a narrow split-decision to Puello in a vacant 140-pound title fight last August on Showtime, with his only other blemish coming in a 2019 action-fight against Mario Barrios.

The 29-year-old Sims (19-2-1, 7 KOs) is one of the hottest fighters in the 140-pound division and can move one step closer to a world title with a victory on May 13. Representing his native Chicago, Ill., Sims has won six-straight outings dating back to May 2018 including triumphs over then-unbeaten fighters Elvis Rodriguez and Keeshawn Williams in 2021. Most recently, Sims dispatched Rock Myrthil in the fifth-round of their December 2022 showdown.

“We already sent the evidence to the proper agencies,” Belgica Peña, Puello’s promoter, told Boxing Scene. “We have proof of the doctor visits, the hospital stays and his wife’s pregnancy.”

“After he and his wife tried for years without success to have children, Alberto visited a urologist and a fertility doctor,” Pena explained to Boxing Scene. “After running several studies, he was diagnosed with Grade 3 Bilateral Variocele. The specialist recommended surgery and medical treatment which we discovered unfortunately contained the banned substance in question.

“We turned over all of the medical records to the (Nevada) commission, the drug testing agency (VADA) and the WBA. The good news is that his wife is pregnant.”
