Ali hitting Foreman with a straight right. First punch of the fight. Made Foreman realise he had a real fight on his hands.

big jeep later did decently in the movies, i think he played bane in one of the bat mans and had a bunch of celebrities at his funeral
also 0 percent chance that he was really 35-0 as an amateur like they said, the guy clearly had barely been hit before

Not ko shots but when I think of first jabs that sent the opponents head snapping back I think Haye vs Bonin and I’m sure the first jab Breidis Prescott landed on Amir Khan had him and everyone else associated with Khan thinking ‘oh sh1t.’

ah yes, the famous prescott jab
Re: Memorable opening punches in a fight
I remember the Hamed vs Lawal one - I thought there was something fishy going on..... the sheer arrogance, the "cutting some moves" at the start as if it was set up that the first shot would be a KO.

Nunn v kalamby
Re: Memorable opening punches in a fight
Not a ko punch or anything, but Herol Graham going to touch gloves with Chris Johnson at the first bell, them drilling him with a straight left.
That set the tone for probably, along with Holmes v Mercer, my favourite 'old manning' victorious fight for a veteran.

That’s funny I was just thinking about that exact Herol Graham moment yesterday.

I loved that lightening quick blowout of Johnny Ellis by Nicky Piper.
Liked to catch them cold did Piper.

Douglas on Tyson. He just came out and started swinging.
Re: Memorable opening punches in a fight
Didn’t Nathan Cleverly have a record for an extremely quick KO? Was that a title defence?
Edit: it was this one. Ouch.

Khan had another really quick KO which won me a lot of money. Against that Yank who said AJ went through his ex wife so Khan threw water over him in the presser. That guy got on the scales and clearly hadn’t trained and was clearly tiny at the weight. I stuck £100 each on round 1 and round 2 at something like 30/1 each and Khan blasted him in a minute.

Amazing how slight bruno looks there - it's obviously quite early in his career, but also compared to some of the big lumps today, he wasn't that big, he did pack on more muscle as he got older, but a lot of the fighters these days look like fat tubs of lard comparatively at heavyweight.

Re: Memorable opening punches in a fight
If you watch a lot of early Bruno fights, he looks significantly slimmer than later on, but it’s also noticeable how much smaller heavyweights were then… Bruno looks enormous and muscular next to his early opponents, even in his ‘slimmer’ days .jamesmcdonnell wrote: ↑25 Apr 2023, 16:57Amazing how slight bruno looks there - it's obviously quite early in his career, but also compared to some of the big lumps today, he wasn't that big, he did pack on more muscle as he got older, but a lot of the fighters these days look like fat tubs of lard comparatively at heavyweight.

Yeah, guys at 240 were the big boys then and few and far between.
Bowe was a giant compared to most around then.

Re: Memorable opening punches in a fight
jack jjohnson was a giant in his day..............at 6 feet 190 pounds. for perspective that's the same height/weight of joe smith on fight night
5'10 185 pound marciano often wasnt much smaller than his opponents
big foreman was a total specimen in his day.............at a paris fury sized 6'3 220
dudes certainly gotten bigger, though perhaps at a cost. conditioning has gone downhill in general, and a lot of the fights are more lazy and filled with single shots. it's become increaasingly rare to find a hw who can box and move and put some combos together at a consistently decent clip for 12, fury and usyk can do it but not many others
