Ingemar Johansson Filmed/Televised fights 1952-1963
Re: Ingemar Johansson Filmed/Televised fights 1952-1963
I'm continuing with contacts in Sweden to try for more footage.
I'm got assume the Cavicchi fight was filmed by Italian TV and my gut tells me that will be gone.
The Cooper fight is frustrating.
Around 70 seconds exists and just when the punch lands we see a spectator! If the BBC filmed it, the tape will be destroyed.
The Richardson and London fights in full might be lying in a cupboard somewhere in Sweden, I hope!!
The full fights I really would want are Cavicchi, Cooper, and London.

Re: Ingemar Johansson Filmed/Televised fights 1952-1963
I've established that due to Sweden's animosity towards boxing their TV channels only gave the news of Johansson's fights they didn't televise them.
The only way Swedes could see his fights was in the cinema shown by a Scandinavian company called Globefilm.
Swedish TV did show highlights of Liston v Ali because the film was given to them by US producers.
Like me, Swedish fans of Johansson only have the youtube fights and the occasional Swedish documentary on DVD.

see page 124-25 of SECONDS OUT OF THE RING.
My guess is the film was probably the property of Edwin Ahlqvist.

some trivia here-I remember reading an issue of FANGORIA magazine issue 22 (1982)
in an article about Tor Johnson by Johnny legend, and it said that he was a relative of Ingemar Johansson

Re: Ingemar Johansson Filmed/Televised fights 1952-1963
I do not think Cooper vs Johansson was broadcast or filmed by the BBC...

Re: Ingemar Johansson Filmed/Televised fights 1952-1963
that clip of Johansson vrs Cooper has all the markings of British Pathe.
they always clip out the moment of impact of any punch in a boxing match in the film clips available from them.,
BTW according to Johansson's 1959 autobiography.
he stunned Cooper with a right, then it was followed by a left, left and then a 'cannon" right ,to the jaw.
Cooper then fell against the ropes ,and grabbed the ropes and then went down.

Re: Ingemar Johansson Filmed/Televised fights 1952-1963
you will probably know that cooper's manager jim wicks said he was blinded by the sun and didn't see the punch coming.
I think both boxers were being cautious, then the ref brought both together and warned them about lack of action.
Cooper took this to heart , got a bit careless and within a few seconds got caught by the Thunderbolt!

Re: Ingemar Johansson Filmed/Televised fights 1952-1963
here is the exact quote from the book ( page 118)
"The first right decided the fight. in the fifth round.
the series of blows was left-left-cannon right to the jaw.
Cooper grabbled with the ropes to get up when the referee was saying 'ten'.

Re: Ingemar Johansson Filmed/Televised fights 1952-1963
I don't have any audio on my computer, so who is Ingemar Johansson fighting here before he fights Eddie Machen ?
the opponents at
6:50 to 8:10 (? Kurt Schiegl )
8:30 to 9:40 ( Uber Bacilieri )
10:00 to 11:05 (Hein Ten Hoff)
12:00 to 14:30
( looks a it may be Uber Bacilieri (8:30-9:40)and Hein Ten Hoff (10:00-11:05)from a different film angles then the previous posted films.
the one at 12:00 to 14:30 looks like Franco Cavicchi to me, judging from the aggressive manner he fights )

Re: Ingemar Johansson Filmed/Televised fights 1952-1963
interesting, those must have been the home films taken by Ingemar Johansson/Edwin Ahlqvist in that 1962 documentary.
( since it ends with a clip from the fight with Dick Richardson )
wonder if they also filmed another version of Johansson vrs Cooper from a different angle ? that would have been a great clip to see.

Re: Ingemar Johansson Filmed/Televised fights 1952-1963
Just discovered that in the MED KRUT I NAVARNA documentary, the last 25 minutes which films the third Patterson fight, is from the opposite of the ring than all the others, this suggests to me that Ahlqvist himself had many of these fights filmed himself?
Re: Ingemar Johansson Filmed/Televised fights 1952-1963

Re: Ingemar Johansson Filmed/Televised fights 1952-1963
could have been a Boxing and film collector who took the film and spliced out the frames to collected of the punch landing
at moment of contact.( they would put the spliced film frame in a small cardboard frame then put them into a slide projector to watch at home.
cinema Projectionist were notorius for that in the 1960's and 1970's.
wanted the frames for their own private collections.

Re: Ingemar Johansson Filmed/Televised fights 1952-1963
February.6.1961
Ingemar Johansson boxes 2 rounds with 3 different sparring partners in an exhibition
at the Miami Convention Centre. the third sparring partner does not show up and look who takes their place.
BTW Did that look like a rabbit punch that knocked Johansson down and out in the third fight ?
This clip below starts out at about the same as 4:55 of the clip above ( just in case you want to watch both simultaneously)

BTW It doesn't look like GlobeFilms of Sweden were interested much in filming the third fight.
What was the preliminary to it on the closed-circuit broadcast ?

Not the full fight but I found an old reel at my parents with the Cavicchi fight and had it digitized. Looks like it is the only footage available at the moment, Enjoy

Oh, and two more fights from said reel. They exist online but more is better :)
