Tim Tszyu ready to return in June, puts Canelo Alvarez on notice

Interim WBO junior middleweight champion Tim Tszyu 22-0 (16) sees a fight against Mexican superstar and undisputed super middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez 59-2-2 (39) in his future.

His famous father Kostya Tszyu fought many Mexicans in his Hall of Fame career and came away with a perfect record against them. Most famous amongst them was his sixth-round battering of the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez.

The 28-year-old Australian announced today that he would be facing another Mexican in Carlos Ocampo 34-2 (22) at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia on June 18.

The bout will come just three months after Tszyu’s ninth-round knockout win over former unified champion Tony Harrison 29-4-1 (21).

“I don’t need to fight, I want to,” Tszyu said to Fox Sports Australia. “I fear no one. And Carlos Ocampo is the perfect test for me. In all honesty, it’s a privilege to be fighting the number one Mexican in my weight division.

“I always knew that eventually I was going to come up against this style.

“I’ve watched so many Mexican legends throughout the years and always admired their tough, all-action style.

“Dad destroyed the greatest Mexican fighter of all time in Julio Cesar Chavez, and I would love to do the same. Perhaps Chavez is Canelo for me one day, who knows?”

As the mandatory contender to undisputed 154-pound champion Jermell Charlo 35-1-1 (19), Tszyu could have easily sat on the sidelines after the boss of the division injured his left hand in sparring and was forced to withdraw from their scheduled January bout.

He didn’t. Instead, he quickly signed a deal to face the only boxer to defeat Charlo in Harrison.

Now, with no timeline for Charlo to return to the ring, Tszyu has done the same thing again.

“Tim Tszyu is a different beast,” No Limit Boxing CEO George Rose said. “He’s that rare breed of modern fighter who isn’t satisfied fighting once or twice a year, because he always wants more.

“Yes, (this upcoming fight) is another massive risk given a shot at Jermell Charlo – and becoming undisputed – is on the line again.

“But he’s done it before and we’re confident he can do it again. Tim has a world class Mexican in front of him in what I expect will be an all out war.

“But I’m backing Tim to get the job done in style.”

Charlo hasn’t been in the prize ring since May last year when he defeated Brian Castano by 10th round knockout in their rematch. His twin brother Jermall, who holds the WBC middleweight title, has not boxed in almost two years for undisclosed reasons.

“So they don’t like to fight,” Tszyu laughed. “I know they call themselves lions, but really they’re a bunch of… I dunno… they just don’t do anything.

“Which isn’t how lions act, let’s just say that.

“(Charlo) is on the decline. I’m on the incline. And by the time we fight, the difference will be shown.”

I agree but I also think it is ridiculous you can defend an interim title.

Tim Tszyu: "I'm Staying Active, While Charlo is in Las Vegas Getting Smashed!"

“I was watching the Garcia/Tank fight the other day and the guy was off his head. Drunk. There’s a difference between me and him. You see me, I’m active. I’m staying ready for the next opportunity. And every opportunity I get, I’m going to take it. Him on the other hand, he’s on a honeymoon, off to Las Vegas, getting smashed,” Tszyu said of Charlo to Fox Sports.

“So there’s a difference and when we do meet there’s going to be trouble — not for me but for him."

“I think he said enough in the Harrison fight. That’s why that (Charlo) fight is taking so long (to be made), I honestly believe that. If Tim had’ve looked half as good as he did against Harrison, they would’ve tried to jump on that as quick as they could," Fenech said.

“But seeing what he did — he destroyed him — and doing it that easy, it’s got to worry them. It’s got to put the fear of God into them guys. They’ve got a lot of work to do.”

Press Release

Showtime Sports will formally announce on tonight’s tripleheader telecast that Tim Tszyu, the undefeated top-ranked junior middleweight, will return to the ring to defend his WBO Interim-super welterweight title against Carlos Ocampo in the main event of a Showtime International Boxing doubleheader, being televised on Saturday, June 17 (Sunday, June 18 in Australia).

Tszyu, the son of boxing legend Kostya Tszyu, dominated former world champion Tony Harrison to win the interim title in March. The 27-year-old Ocampo has 22 KOs in 34 wins, with his only losses coming against Errol Spence Jr. and Sebastian Fundora.

The two-fight Showtime telecast airs live at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT from Gold Coast Convention Centre in Queensland, Australia and also features a battle of undefeated 122-pound contenders as veteran Ra’eese Aleem takes on Australia’s Sam Goodman in an IBF super bantamweight world title eliminator in the event’s co-feature.

The Showtime announce team will call the fights remotely from CBS studios in New York City.

Tonight’s Showtime tripleheader kicks off at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and features hard-hitting Rolando “Rolly’’ Romero battling No. 1 Contender Ismael Barroso for the vacant WBA super lightweight world title in the main event from The Chelsea inside The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas in an event presented by Premier Boxing Champions.

Carlos Ocampo Enters WBO Rankings, Approved To Challenge Tim Tszyu For Interim Title

Carlos Ocampo has magically appeared in the WBO rankings just in time to fight for an interim title.

Approval was granted for Mexico’s Ocampo to challenge for Tim Tszyu’s interim WBO junior middleweight title, per a resolution reached by the sanctioning body on Tuesday. The order came exactly one week after Tszyu’s team confirmed the upcoming fight, which is scheduled to take place June 18 at Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre in the Gold Coast suburb of Broadbeach, Queensland, Australia.

The bout will be the last stay busy fight approved for Tszyu; the winner will be ordered to next challenge for the main title held by undisputed champion Jermell Charlo (35-1-1, 19 KOs) by no later than September 30.

“Please be advised that the WBO World Championship Committee hereby grants sanction approval for the subject

Matter,” WBO Championship Committee chairman Luis Batista-Salas told Tszyu’s promoter, Matt Rose of No Limit Boxing, in an official letter obtained by Boxing Scene. “Sanction approval is granted subject to the following provisions:

- (i) the winner must face in his next bout the WBO Jr. Middleweight Champion no later than September 30, 2023;

- (ii) the winner must be available, ready, willing, and able to face in his next bout the WBO Jr. Middleweight Champion within the above referenced period;

- (iii) if the winner is not available to fight in his next bout the WBO Jr. Middleweight Champion regardless the reasons or circumstances, the WBO World Championship Committee shall proceed pursuant to the WBO Regulations of World Championship Contests; and

- (iv) the Committee reserves the right to issue all further rulings deemed necessary, helpful, and convenient to accomplish the purposes, policies, and intent of the WBO rules, including, but not limited to rendering all rulings necessary to serve the best interests in the sport of professional boxing, including those in the WBO Jr. Middleweight Division.

Ocampo (34-2, 22 KOs) was not ranked at the time of the announced clash with Tszyu (22-0, 16 KOs). A petition was filed by No Limit to have the Mexican boxer enter the WBO top 15 despite having lost his last fight. The request was approved, as Ocampo is now ranked number-eleven by the Puerto Rico-headquartered organization.

Former WBO junior middleweight titlist Brian Castano was removed from the rankings to make room for Ocampo. Castano’s removal was justified; he has not fought since a title reign-ending knockout defeat to Charlo in their full unification rematch last May 14 in Carson, California.

Tszyu served as the mandatory challenger at the time and has patiently waited for his shot at the crown. He was due to face Charlo on January 28 in Las Vegas. However, the championship clash was canceled after Charlo suffered a broken hand injury in training camp last December.

The delay allowed Tszyu to challenge for the interim WBO 154-pound title, which he claimed in a ninth-round knockout of former WBC titlist Tony Harrison (29-4-1, 21 KOs) on March 12 in Sydney. The upcoming interim title defense versus Ocampo marks the second straight on home soil for the 28-year-old Tszyu, a second-generation boxer from Rockdale.

He’d previously spent his entire career in Australia before making his U.S. debut in a twelve-round win over former title challenger Terrell Gausha last March 26 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The fight was his first under the Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) banner, which was supposed to ease the transition towards challenging for the world title.

Circumstances beyond his control have instead allowed Tszyu to return home, where he has long served as a top gate attraction. His upcoming fight versus Ocampo will mark his first in Queensland since his August 2020 annihilation of former WBO welterweight titlist Jeff Horn, a win which took his career to new heights.

The son of Hall of Fame former undisputed 140-pound king Kostya Tszyu is now eager to land a championship of his own but for now settles for his second fight in three months.

Ocampo enters his second straight interim title fight, despite having lost his last outing. The trip Down Under will mark his first career fight outside of The Americas through eleven years as a pro. The 27-year-old from Ensenada, Baja California was last seen giving it a go in a twelve-round defeat to then-unbeaten interim WBC junior middleweight titlist Sebastian Fundora last October 8 in Carson, California. The setback snapped a twelve-fight win streak, all at junior middleweight after a first knockout loss to Errol Spence in their June 2018 welterweight title fight.

With a win, Tszyu will remain at the head of the line for a shot at Charlo for all of the 154-pound hardware.

Charlo has not fought since the aforementioned win over Castano. Given the ruling on Tuesday, it appears that he will not be afforded a “get-back” fight before having to face the Tszyu-Ocampo winner.

Dog bites Tim Tszyu, fight still on

WBO interim junior middleweight champion Tim Tszyu has undergone emergency surgery after being bitten on the back of his right forearm by a dog. Tszyu was attending a BBQ at a friend’s home over the weekend. Tszyu’s manager Glen Jennings told FOX Sports Australia that the bite is superficial and he expects Tszyu to be ready and 100% healthy to fight Carlos Ocampo on June 18.

Tim Tszyu On Dog Bite: "I Dodged A Bullet; Could've Put Me On Sideline For Rest Of My Career"

“At the time, when it first happened, I was in a bit of shock,” Tszyu told BS.com. “I was like, ‘What in the f---? Can this stop the fight?’ But as soon as I got it operated on and I saw it, I was like, ‘You know what? I feel much better. It’s good.’ And then I went to the surgeon the next day after [surgery] and he said this is sweet. And as soon as I heard that, I said, ‘This is good.’ It was not a problem.”

“It sort of happened real quick,” Tszyu recalled. “It was on a Saturday. The dog just sort of jumped on me. It was my friend’s dog. So, I just pulled back and he got me on the right arm. I went into surgery. They stitched it up and got it cleaned out. And then, yeah, on Sunday I was in bed basically. And then Monday I was back into training, so it was all good.”

“I dodged a bullet, though, you know?,” Tszyu said. “It could’ve been much worse. I’m lucky that it was just superficial. It could’ve put me on the sideline for the rest of my career. Who knows with those dogs?”

Tszyu received 37 stitches from the dog attack and it occurred only about 3 weeks out from the fight. There was a picture in the newspaper of the wounds. Nasty!

Tszyu might be the best “fvck it I’ll fight him” guy in the world right now and he really does not have to be. Could easily just wait for his undisputed fight or make a million a fight vs noones due to his last name…. It’s really cool to see somone recognise that you have to keep moving even if it means risking a “potential opportunity”

Gets fornicating mauled by a dog, no dramas, let’s go… it might not be smart but it’s easy to love the risk takers in boxing.
