Belgian bridgerweight and former WBA cruiserweight champion Ryad Merhy (31-1) reports on Facebook that he will fight former IBO cruiserweight ruler Kevin Lerena (28-2) in a WBC eliminator in Johannesburg on March 18.

Lerena was last seen fighting Daniel Dubois for the WBA "regular" heavyweight title and was stopped in the third but had the champ down three times in the first round.

I assume this is at Cruiserweight? Lerena one and done at heavyweight, what a carefully picked opponent for Dubois that was...

Kevin Lerena won’t rush return to boxing ring after Daniel Dubois fight

South African heavyweight star Kevin Lerena wants to spend “quality time” with his wife and children, and wants his body and mind to recover fully from a busy 2022 before he gets back into the ring.

Following his bout with British heavyweight Daniel Dubois in December, it was expected that Lerena would return to boxing as early as March.

But in an Instagram post this week, the 30-year-old southpaw from Johannesburg stated that he is only likely to fight again in April, possibly against Ivory Coast-born Belgian pugilist Ryad Merhy.

Lerena went toe-to-toe with Dubois at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London for the WBA (regular) heavyweight title, knocking his much taller and heavier opponent to the ground on a few occasions, but then succumbing to a third-round technical knockout in controversial circumstances.

Dubois went down three times in the first round, but was controversially allowed to recover in his corner after English referee Howard Foster called time at two minutes and 49 seconds — 11 seconds short of the required three minutes.

In contrast, when Dubois caught Lerena with an uppercut in the third round, the South African said he felt the referee didn’t give him the same amount of time to recover before stopping the fight.

“For many asking in anticipation — I won’t be fighting in the beginning of March. I made the decision to take some time off to repair my niggles that have been bothering me. I want to spend quality time with my wife and (two) kids,” Lerena posted on Instagram.

“We got a new bundle of joy in bound, and that is of most importance.

“I fought in September 2022 and in December 2022 for the WBA world title. My body and mind hasn’t had the necessary time to recover – two fights back-to-back in which I carried a lot of weight on my shoulders.

“I think fighting in March is rushing my return and would not be in my best interest.

“I hope to get out again in the month of April. Once again to my loyal supporters — thank you.”

Long-time promoter Rodney Berman is busy sorting out Lerena’s next fight, posting on Twitter that it could happen in April, to which the former cruiserweight stalwart replied: “Yes!! April let’s get it — Lerena vs Merhy is an extremely challenging fight! I look forward!

Just had a look at the new Bridgerweight rankings, these two are rated 2 and 4 somehow. I will never get over how tragic this division looks. Rivas and Rozanski looked like the only guys that would make the heavyweight top 50.

Champion in Recess - Oscar Rivas

1) Alen Babic (Silver Champion)
2) Ryad Merhy
3) Lukasz Rozanski
4) Kevin Lerena
5) Adam Balski
6) George Arias
7) Samuel Kadje
8) Felix Parada
9) Alfonso Lopez
10) Senad Gashi
11) Kem Ljungquist (International Champion)
12) Bilal Laggoune
13) Petar Milas
14) Kris Terzievski
15) Oleksandr Teslenko
16) Carlouse Welch
17) Junior Anthony Wright
18) Harsh Gill
19) Muhamad Farkhan
20) Elvis Garcia

Milas looks one if the best on that list. Hasn’t been very active since 2019, and the yoka loss but I do see him as a top 50 heavyweight if he gets fights.

It's like they begged a bunch of low level heavy's to enrol in the BW.

Lerena, Merhy clash in WBC bridger eliminator

South Africa’s Kevin Lerena meets Côte D’Ivoire born Ryad Merhy who fights out of Brussels, Belgium in a WBC bridgerweight title eliminator at Emperors Palace near Kempton Park on Saturday night.

The tournament will be shown live on Supersport.

The World Boxing Council is the only boxing organization that recognizes the bridgerweight division, with a limit of 224 pounds (101kg)

The WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman stated that today’s heavyweights are simply too big, making it unsafe for some of the smaller big men, so that is why they created the division in July 2020

The first world championship fight took place on 22 October 2021 between Oscar Rivas and Ryan Rozicki, with Rivas winning on a 12 round unanimous points decision.

The title is currently held by Lukasz Rozanski of Poland.

LERENA ALWAYS SUPERBLY CONDITIONED

Since making his pro debut on 30 November 2011 the always superbly conditioned Lerena (28-2, 14 KOs), who fights from the southpaw stance, has won the WBF African, WBC Youth Silver, South African, IBO cruiserweight titles and the WBA Intercontinental heavyweight title.

In his most recent last fight on 3 December at the Tottenham Hotspur, Stadium in London against Daniel Dubois for the WBA secondary heavyweight title, he had his opponent down three times in the first round before being stopped in the third round. Fortunately for Dubois, there was no three-knockdown rule.

The South African who will celebrate his 31st birthday on 5 May has not picked an easy one for his return to action after coming off a stoppage loss.

LERENA’S TOUGHEST OPPONENT

Merhy, 30, has compiled a record of 31-1, 26 KOs, with an 81.25% knockout ratio since making his pro debut on 28 June 2013.

He won the WBA cruiserweight title on an eighth-round technical knockout against the capable Zhoaxin Zhang (10-1-1).and subsequently relinquished it.

His only loss came against Arsen Goulamirian (22-0) on 24 March 2018 in a clash for WBA interim cruiserweight title.

This is possibly the toughest opponent that Lerena has come against in his nearly 12-year career, but always superbly conditioned he will not go down fighting against the favoured Merhy and could surprise his critics.

In the current WBC Bridger weight ratings Merhy is listed at No. 2 and Lerena at No. 4.

UNDERCARD

On the undercard Keaton Gomes 9-2; 7 makes the first defence of his South African heavyweight title against the former champion, Joshua Pretorius 9-6; 5.

Welterweight – 6 rounds – Keanu Koopman v Peter DeKlerk.

Junior welterweight – 6 rounds – Ntethelelo Nkosi v Gift Bolo.

Junior bantamweight – 4 rounds – Ndabazinhle Ohiri v Miranda Malajika.

Junior flyweight – 4 rounds – Sandile Wessels v Beaven Sibanda.

The tournament is presented by Golden Gloves Promotions.

lerena is good, should fit in well at bridger, dubs was just too much man for him, and even then he bounced his arse off the canvas for a bit
