Anyone hear Bunce's BBC 5Live Canelo-Ryder radio commentary?

Post by Cholo_cws »

Bunce took the role of blow-by-blow commentator. I'm not sure what happened to Big Ron. Although clearly a wordsmith Ron was badly missed. Tough for Bunce to fill his shoes but he must have known what was required of him. I just hope Bunce isn't now going to be a stand-in in the future because his commentary was quite bizarre with very little commentary on the action for much of the fight. These days radio is my main source for taking in a live fight. Anyone else hear it?

Commentating on a fight over the radio is well outside Bunce`s skill set. It requires good knowledge of the sport to read it correctly to accurately articulate it to the listeners so they are getting a good idea of how its going.

Bunce is little more than a screeching big mouthed colour man. When he has time and resources to write his articles etc he can put it together well enough - when he has to rely on his own knowledge of the game he was found wanting.

I don’t think it’s fair to say Bunce doesn't have knowledge of the sport.

He’s spent more time in gyms and at ringside than us lot put together - amateur and pro.

He saw the likes of Froch and Haye coming long before most.

It is a ridiculous statement. The only thing he is lacking in is experience as a lead commentator for radio!

Bunce is just like Colin Hart. Been around and in front seat positions long enough to be one of the most informed out there. But sadly too arrogant to listen or see alternatives to what he thinks he already knows.

He also swooned over Audley Harrison ..

Did the setanta studio shows for hours on end, often without guests and often ad libbing.

Bunce's knowledge is definitively fine, although admittedly he knows which side his bread is buttered so doesn’t rock the boat and can be a bit sycophantic at times. But being the lead commentator on a live radio fight is a difficult thing to do, I imagine. Especially when you have very little experience of doing it, and when your usual broadcast role is just giving a few quick insights between rounds.

I think a lot of folk here, me included, have a love hate relationship with Bunce, the lows obv being Big Dave, his shouty behaviour and selling himself for Parcel Force.

However the job he did for Setanta is not to be sniffed at and I think his knowledge stands up against most.

Sorry lads - but any comparison between Bunce and Hart is crazy.

Bunce has put in the hard miles on the amateur and pro circuit for the last 30 years. If Hart goes to more than 6 shows a year I’ll be surprised.

On Audley - we all make mistakes. Although I remembered him being critical at times, particularly after his debut.

Wasn’t his line of thinking more that he had the tools to dominate - not that he definitely would.

i remember he talked up that clev would slap around kov too, then after the fight was ranting about people saying kov was a padded record hype job, even though bunce had picked him to be exposed lol

he''s put in the time and work no doubt. i dont doubt his knowledge. i think he may have boxed a bit too as an am many years ago as well? but he's obnoxious (making threats online, attacking fans who tried to help him, bizarre behaviour over the jones-levedev fight, etc) and for every moment of wisdom he has there are about 5 full blown diaherrias of sh!t, so im not a fan

Bunce has a good knowledge of boxing but given this is the only sport he’s covered as a journalist/ media man for 30+ years is that really surprising?

I can’t get away with his subservient, unctuous, fawning ways though. Biggest ‘company’ man in the game. It’s probably why he has endured as long as he has so I get it to an extent. But he’s not a journalist or writer who could ever be compared to Thomas Hauser or the great Harry Mullan as he’s not objective or balanced. I’m not a big fan of Dan Rafael for example but at least he asks some awkward questions at pressers and will tackle the sport’s burning issues. The Bunce Podcast virtually ignoring the whole frankly outrageous Conor Benn farce since last October being a case in point. He throws in the odd gem every now and then (some of his recent BN feature pieces have been good) but I can’t respect him. Was funny when he went mental on Twitter insisting to everyone in the wake of the second Warrington v Lara fight thar Josh was bossing the fight! “LETS GET IT RIGHT…. some of the hills he chooses to die on are quite cringey/hilarious.”

And I don’t think I’ll ever tire of watching the infamous BBC finding Kirkland Laing piece when he started talking to Kirk in a park in the voice of a Jamaican Yardie.

Just spotted this thread. I listened to the 'commentary' with growing annoyance as the rounds went by. I began to wonder if there was actually a fight taking place, as mostly it was Bunce either talking about himself or explaining why Canelo was an elite level fighter. His Co-host was a Mexican lady who's main contributions were to shout 'oh my gawd' whenever Canelo landed a hefty punch. I suppose at least her yells (a) showed there was a fight going on and (b) saved me listening to .Bunce for a few precious seconds. Probably the worst commentary I've ever listened to on radio.

I saw a video of the bout a few days later and it bore no relation to what I'd listened to.

Bunce knows a lot about boxing but as someone observed in a post you'd expect him to. Sone of his articles are quite well written and interesting, but his voice and antics aren't to my taste. But that's just my view, and I guess he has his admirers.

Thankfully I didn't hear his commentary. I can't stand the man, hope he sends everyone to Coventry. My missus has to leave the room if he's on.

Bunce is rubbish on the radio as is Big Ron, he swallowed a dictionary and spends so much time getting the words out that you virtually know what's happened before he gets the words out by the crowd reaction. Enough discombobulation and more snappy commentating. Rawling is quite good.

Jim Neilly is my favourite commentator, not sure he's even working any more, as cannot recall the last time I heard him.

Commentating is a dying art, being able to both call a fight, and also commentate on the actual action, is a rare skill.

Too many commentators just jabber on endlessly about unrelated guff, feeling like a second of dead air is a crime.

Not a fan of Neilly myself, Costello as others have mentioned is good. Steve Holdsworth used to be good but now retired I think. The guvnors were Reg and Harry though.
